I have a small window for a trip in the new year. After some research I think I can manage 8 mountains/10 days on snow. My rough on snow itinerary is as follows:

    Jan 2-6 Iiyama area
    Madarao/Tangram
    Nozawa Onsen
    Togari Onsen
    Kijimadaira

    Jan 7-11 Myoko area
    Lotte Arai
    Suginohara
    Ikenotaira
    Myoko Akkakura

I'm a competent skier who enjoys any terrain as long as I'm on snow.

    A few questions:
Given the time of year what sort of snow conditions should I expect, is it likely on average to be soft or icy?
Are any of these mountains worth skipping in favour of more days somewhere else?
Is there any general advice you could give me to make the most of my trip?

    Thanks

Should be really icey and I feel you haven't picked enough destinations.

You arent missing much at ikenotaira. Its quite mellow but longish runs.
Akakura Onsen Isnt really worth it. Kanko is. But the scandies are thick.
Ryuoo looks worth it in the Iiyama area.

Ha! In Iiyama I am staying at a place where my host has offered to "send it once per day by car". After some back and forth it tuns out he is willing to drop me at any of these 4 mountains daily.

For Myoko apparently busses go to all of the resorts I've listed from my accommodation. I don't have to go to all of the ones I've listed which is why I'm asking for advice.

EDIT: It was a serious question about on snow conditions. Last year I went to Hakuba and on average it was pretty firm conditions whilst I was there.

IMO it's a day by day proposition.
Depends on where has the best snow.

Put another way are there any resorts I absolutely should visit? I ask because of some of the excellent discount vouchers on offer at the moment...

    LOL

You seem to want to spend a lot of time in a van travelling to places. Are you not coming back to the area - it's only a one-off?

Part 1) Are you staying in Iiyama or Madarao? If Iiyama it becomes slightly more feasible. I don't mind Togari. Ryuoo is a good choice and there's also a bus to Shiga Kogen from Iiyama Station.

Part 2) Lots of places in Myoko run private shuttles to the slopes. Have you checked with them if they offer it? Scratch AO and add Akakura Kanko.

I don't know whether this is a scouting expedition for a later trip or a one off. The timing of the trip was out of my hands and the itinerary kind of fell together for me.

Staying in Iiyama and being driven by my accommodation host which is why I have options, otherwise I would have parked myself in Madarao for the duration. Unfortunately Ryuoo isn't on the list of resorts he offered to drive me to but I can ask as it seems about the same distance as the others. The setup there looks intriguing.

Thanks, I knew it was one of the Akakuras worth visiting, added Kanko to the list.

I wouldn't get too hung up on a firm plan. I would focus on doing the first two on your list in the first 3 or 4 days and take it from there. You might find the whole time can be spent at those two. Lots of terrain to cover and some resorts are better than others for particular conditions. I'd then consider Lotte, Sugi and Akkakan as potential diversions on any given day. Make the decision the night before once you know what conditions will be like.

    Just my 2c....
