This afternoon just as the rain/sleet was clearing we went for a walk from Guthega along Illawong walk to Illawong lodge. Thanks to the folks from the BC threads (and especially @skifree) for the inspiration!

Blue cow creek was roaring

The lodge - that emergency shelter is tight!

Looking back along the Snowy River towards Guthega - not a lot of snow left after the recent rain, but still beautiful and wild out there.

I’m so glad we got to see a little piece of ski history and some more of the KNP. Definitely keen to do the walk again in spring!

Vale Illawong!

Illawong Hut has survived and been well maintained during the (roughly) 40 year decline of remote huts!

As an 'indepenent' XC skier, I've been thankful for the occasional "would you like to come in for some soup or cocoa?"
It looked very well maintained, and I can only imagine how cosy it would be sitting in there with snow surrounding!

Way back - Winter 2003/2004?

Took some newbie friends out BC.

Got as far as 100m to Illawong Lodge.

Blizzard dump!

Tent bound for 3 days!

After we 'got out', we learnt that cars were sliding into each other in Nuggets Crossing car park!

Aah, I long for those times!

I was told on arrival about that tradition of welcoming passers by in for a cuppa, which I did on a rest day for the problem ankles when a few xc skiers went past. I also made yoghurt for the first time that day in a swedish yoghurt maker. The hut has a hot shower and a flushing loo and low flow alarms for when the pipes start icing up. The water comes direct from a creek. Happy memories.
