Updated: 17 June 2021.

Upon upload, if no selection is made to either insert as full or insert as thumbnail, the uploaded image will insert as FULL by default. This is new behaviour, on previous version of the forums, the thumbnail would default.

More re: forum upgrade (June 2021 upgrade).
The image upload process has not actually changed, but the new system generates a thumbnail that looks like the image is already embedded in your post, but it is not.

If on phone, tap the image, if on desktop click the image -- this will reveal the choice to insert as full image or as an attachment. If no selection is made, the uploaded image will default as an attachment.

Full size images in quoted posts will only show as thumbnails (as per previous).

This is the effect it has sometimes. The image is embedded but the attachment preview is shown as well and in something of a large or exploded format. Doesn't look good on a mobile

If on phone, tap the image to get the choice to insert as full image or as an attachment. If no selection is made, the uploaded image will default as an attachment.

The key to it is the little pop-up in the top left corner of the image. It's pretty much instantaneous in the live system, but there was a small lag in dev. I'd assume that when the site is being hammered, there may be lag as well.

Edit: There will be lag with larger files or animated content, such as videos or animated GIFs.

Here's what to look out for:

1. Wait for the "Insert..." pop-up

2. Make your choice.

Sorry for the idiot question, but how do I post a snapshot (for want of a better term) of a webcam without it updating? I have tried in the past and not managed to have the image fixed, it has updated as the view on the cam has changed

That now works magically. Exactly because of the problem you just described.

Yes, prior to the upgrade this was an issue - hot linked images from the cams kept updating just as they do on the cam page.

However, since the upgrade to XF2 an addon has been installed that converts all hotlinked images to attachments.

Therefore....
Use the share code on a snow cam page and just drop it in, and it will save as attachment automatically and never update. Bingo!
