Saw the reference in the trip reports but I thought this warrants its own thread:
I'd only just been reading back through threads here where people had commented on how much fun it is to get air on the corner.
So own up guys, which one of you miscreants did it!?! :)

Seriously though that sucks in a big way. How common is this sort of thing (in resorts around the country/world)? I've not heard of it happening in a way to cause damage like this.

The cable was new? There must have been a mistake made replacing it?

I know of at least 2 occasions in late 70s and early 80 when its derailed. Some dickheads built a big jump there once and someone was posted there to make sure they didn't do it again for a while. Shit boring job.

Saw plenty of kids getting slingshot rides at the start, looked like fun.

Nothing new to see here. Been happening for decades , long before chairlifts were invented and introduced to Flat Creek @dawooduck
Have played anchor man to trapeze artist on one derail in the 80's. Obviously a crappy anchor man.

I used to fear that poma when I was a skinny kid. Every now and then youd get one with a really stretched spring and when it finally engaged you would rocket skywards.

the corner is not the only place dickheads play. swinging out on dismount is also a problem. long time ago i was waiting to cross the poma line to go to the maze when such a ******** did his stupid dismount, it sent the poma swinging in a wild circle. it actually went past me and swung back from uphill and hit me in the head almost knocking me out. bigger problem was that i put my hand up to protect my face. result was skier's thumb injury. i wore a splint but no pole on my left hand for the rest of the season. it still gives me a bit of discomfort about 25 yeas later

One of my most endearing memories of falls/international is one day where a couple of lads would sling shot on that corner and actually land flips. God knows what it was doing to the cable/lift but man was it impressive :D

This is all just a tragedy! Going to Falls this WE for the first time in 9 years and the Summit/Inter/Maze area is where I love to ski! Sure you can still go via Gully/Summit but a much slower way.

I'm assuming splicing in a new piece of cable isn't a quick fix (the skilled labour to do so would come from where?)

We often bag the "fun police" because they try to stop us from doing what we want. This is one example of why they are necessary.

I like drag lifts, even for accomplished snowboarders they are still far more uncomfortable troublesome to ride

If every skier kept an eye out and quietly tackled the destructive few, or pointed them out to the lifty at the top, it would end soon enough.

That's not for me though. I noisily tackle them.

No towie at the top of Inter. Nobody that saw Sunday's incident were going to make it to the top anyway. Friends of mine were riding it when it happened and it came to a stop with "an earth shattering kaboom!!"....to quote that little space guy off the old Warner Bros cartoons.
There are the deliberate stupid acts and then the stuff done by people with NFI....eg slaloming near the towers on Lakeside, unloading directly before a tower etc that I see so many do.

    I do both.
Last year I saw dumb and dumber both swing way out wide on the Kofflers T ahead of me to the point I heard the top clamp hit the pulley wheel guide.
I called out from the hangar behind them "Cant you read the sign" and pointed at the sign that said "do not swing out."
Dumb yells back "what are you going to do about it"
Got to the top and they were standing there and I said, "Ill show you what"

Called out to the lift op who came out and said to him "can you call ski patrol, these two are trying to bust the lift on purpose and they need their lift tickets cancel."
    He says OK
I turned back to these guys and said "Looks like you're going home already", nothing more to say they skooched off hurriedly in the direction of Wombat.

Lifty says to me "what was that about", told him, he said "yeah thought it might be so I just went along with it"
    We both had a laugh.

Nothing like the prospect of blowing a lift pass get their attention.
Might think twice about it next time.

Today's snow report had the whole story of what they are doing to get it back online, and repeating the target of 15/16 Aug.
I'd sure hope they wouldn't publicise that without some degree of confidence it will be around that timeframe.

I know I'm going to be really grateful if they pull it off (the job not the cable :) )

When I could barely ski, a friend took me to Falls and lined me up on the International, I was riding happily, and congratulating myself on my extraordinary ability, when I saw this 45 degree bend in the lift line looming up
I had no idea what to do, but made it OK, and have learned to love the inter since.
My kids used to love getting air on the bend
(I'm pretty sure they never derailed the cable)
The derail incident may well rival the tied test, where 500,000 people swear they were present, how many skiers and boarders will tell us in the future "I was on the Inter when it derailed"?

It's derailed many times before, as has lakeside and other pomas that no longer run. This is just a particulary nasty one where it seems 2 pomas got tangled up in the pulleys etc, didn't release and stripped the cable.

quite possible, but idiots have been swinging out on Inter long before digital cameras, let alone gopros, were invented

a friend caught a kid swinging out around the outside of the poles on the lakeside corner this week, after the inter derail.:headbang:

I would find that number a bit surprising, I had heard a number of $25-30K for the complete new cable that went in this Summer. I may say that if it was my business I would not be spending $100K on getting Inter back up in a hurry when with all things being equal there is a fair chance it might only have on average another 2 weeks viable running for the season.

    Sad but true

AFAIK inter has not been groomed yet this year, and there is still a significant hole in it. The maze may be open but cover is not great. This next system MIGHT improve things but it won't is not one of inter's best seasons

    Here's an idea.

How about the resorts pool together to fund and store in Aussie some items like cable(s)?
Cables seem to fail quite often (usually no fault of the lift company) but it seems risky having to haul everything out of Europe. Other items like main drives, engines is another matter.

Perhaps a cam on the Poma bend might help prevent this unfortunate type of act in future?

Without knowing anything about this particular incident.....
I would suggest there would be as many different cables as there are ski lifts, (all different)
And how could a cam prevent anything?
It might identify the culprit, but the cable would still be on the ground!

I think you'll find cameras act as a deterrent. Especially if they are placed above big signs on poma poles in problem areas that read:

"Riding outside the poma tracks will result in confiscation of lift pass".

Many idiots don't take much notice of such deterrents. And everyone else is left with the nagging feeling they're living in a police state if it's too overbearing.

Fair call but for specific proble points I think some surveillance has merit.

Fwiw I don't think the policing of our ski slopes (as opposed to the access highways) is overbearing - generally. In fact based what I experienced at Hotham this week, a bit more policing, surveillance & ticket-marking would see a high standard of courtesy and rider behaviour and for many (ESP newbies and smaller/older/younger folks) a much more pleasant and safer experience. (Sounding like the parent I am!)

Not so much policing but education and awareness. TBH I reckon years ago there was more staff letting you know if you were stuffing up and removing lift access, but maybe I was stuffing up back then.

They could get a bit creative with the signs like

"Anyone caught riding outside the poma tracks will be shot"
