A friend was wondering where this photo of her Dad was taken. She thinks this was about 1962. Has vague recollections of family trips in later years to Thredbo and Perisher. He may have been a member of Ski Club of Australia or another early club. Any brain's trust insights on where this is and the Lodge behind him. The 'The Lodge' sign behind him should mean something to someone. Thanks.
Not a bad old car too.

Great old pic. I would guess Thredbo too, looking at buildings behind, but no idea other than that.

It is a lodge at the top of the stairs from Diggings Terrace to Mowama Place on the left hand side. Demolished when the apartments were built. It used to have the post office in it. I also have a feeling that it might have been staff housing, but I'm not sure about that.

Suggest contacting Thredbo Resort. They have a museum and might be interested in getting a copy of that pic

Sure is . It was there when I lived in snowgum in 83 when I worked for fleets . At that time kt staff lived in "the lodge ". There were a few hang gliders around the back of it too. Didn't ever see them used tho . The village had a great night life back then with a lot of staff living in the village with the bistro Keller and schuss humming pretty much every night .

A hell of a lot better than it would be now without snowmaking. Remember back then they regularly had 3+ metre seasons!

Don't be so sure. We also had seriously crap seasons. Top to bottom skiing was a rarity - perhaps a couple of weeks in a year. Top to Middle Station was acceptable. Top to Tower 10 on Ramshead meant that the whole resort was accessible. High Noon only opened if Creek Station on the Merrits Chair was open. Top to Kareela occasionally happened. On most days you had to download to get off the mountain. As well as no snowmaking there was minimal grooming.

Yeah I was looking at the snow depth charts from back then and I can see some seasons were indeed pretty thin. But those epic 3+ metre years must've been pretty special!

Went horse riding at Thredbo in January 1969 and we stayed at Happy Jacks near the Ampol petrol station

Yeah, I always enjoyed my dad's retelling of the worst season ever (83?)

There wasn't enough snow to ski off the top of the Crackenback double, so you had to walk off the chair and down Eagle way in the mud for a bit. Then put your skis on. There was no grooming, so the Supertrail was giant moguls separated by patches of grass, as base of the moguls had been scoured right to the ground. These moguls got you about 2/3 of the way down to the old Meadows mid station, where you had to again take off your skis and hike down through the mud for a couple of hundred meters to get back on the chair.

On the best season ever (the year before that, 82?)

"The entire mountain was a different shape. You couldn't recognise the runs there was so much snow. Where cornices usually are there was nothing and other cornices appeared in the strangest places"

    82 was the bad one.

I remember using the old Meadows a lot. Also no Gunbarrel, and HN was a black run. Grooming was pretty crap. At least we had plastic boots by the time I skied Thredbo! Alpine that is! I think 79 or 80 was my first time at Thredbo.

Early 80s, prob 81, could not drive to Perisher. Had to leave vehicle at Sawpit Creek and catch a Perisher provided shuttle.... Chairs were buried, mayhem. Massive.

Fleets, retailer of ski gear with the rental arm. Sydney based and was owned by Dr Taylor up until the late 1980s.

I think the building was the original Thredbo "Pub" built in about 1957(?) and which had some accommodation. As others have mentioned it was later used for staff accommodation during the late sixties and seventies. Very flash car for 1962 - a Mark II Jaguar.
