This is going to be a bit more of a stream of consciousness pic dump than a properly crafted TR most likely. But we will see.

Very different trip to previous thanks to our little bub but I think we will enjoy it much the same.

Plan is to attend the SIGB ski test in Pila in the Aosta Valley in Italy, then go through to Cham for March. We have a car this time which is different, and an MIL babysitter for Italy and the first week in Cham. After that who knows.

Flew in to Milan and picked up a rental car and found a place on a lake nearby called Lake Orta to spend 2 nights relaxing and getting over jetlag. I can't quite believe I stumbled across it, it was beyond beautiful.

Our Airbnb apartment was the front middle floor of this building - all 3 arched windows:

We then drove to Aosta where we have rented another apartment for the week. Pila resort where the ski test is being held is up above Aosta and connected by gondola but for a few reasons we drove up each day.

The view from the top of Pila is pretty much unparalleled in the Alps. And we had clear skies for 4 days to soak it all in. Over the back is the Gran Paradiso and from the front you can see from Mont Blanc all the way around to the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.

Day 5 of the test we skipped as it sounded like all the reps would be packing up and trying to get away early, plus there's weather coming in. So we're checking out Aosta today and driving through to Cham tomorrow.

    Forecast looks tasty.

Oh and as you probably guessed from the videos, the snow at Pila was decidedly average though perfect for testing narrower skis suited to Oz conditions. 2 years ago we did the test in Austria and it dumped, so while it was fun testing all the pow skis, spring-type conditions and good filming weather was a better outcome for us.

Looks like it would be huge fun in fresh snow.

Enforcer 88 was an absolute ripper. I always loved the 93 but I find that 92-95mm width range just a hair wide for Australia, I think 88-91 is the sweet spot and the Enforcer just nails it. CG was even more in love with the Santa Ana 88. But she is a Nordica tart.

Brahma 82 an excellent ski. Longer radius than your average ~80mm carver, if the Brahma 88 skis like a wide GS ski, the 82 is characteristically similar just narrower. 19m radius when lots of your typical ~80mm carvers are 15-16m.

QST 92 and 99 are excellent improvements on already good skis. CG skied the Lumen 99 the same time as I was on the QST 99 and we had a ball. Waited for the soft snow though.

I know it's not new but it was my first chance to get out on it, **** me the Line Sakana is a fun ski. And that was just in arvo slush.

Wasn't much point getting out on the other Pollard skis. Tom from the shop took the Outline to Japan so he's in a good position to review, and as much as the Bacon is an iconic ski and I approve of it going back to 108mm I really wasn't going to glean much.

Mindbender 90Ti is going to be a solid entrant into that crowded category, IMO it sits in the goldilocks spot with the Vantage 90Ti - just right as an all-mountain - not as piste-y as a Brahma for example and not as off-pistey as say an Enforcer/Fischer Ranger/Head Kore etc with their big rockered tips.

I didn't ski the Mindbender 99Ti as I brought a pair over with me so will get plenty of days on them in France.

Oh and the Head Supershape i.Rally was one of the nicest narrow carvers I've skied - good balance of strong edge hold and performance at speed without the ass-kicking that you get from a detuned race ski like my Redster X9. That said after watching and analysing so much video of myself, I need an ass-kicking! The only short turns that I did that I deemed fit to publish were on that ski.

Yes have heard good things about the Enforcer 88. Its nice that they didn't dumb it down as they sometimes do as the waste with goes down, that will be a solid and easier seller in store especially in Aus, I'm assuming you have ordered a shitload of them.
Same goes with the QST series, they have always been a tad Meh so its also nice they have given that some extra balls.

Did you get to ski the Kendo 88 by any chance? Have heard similar good things, as in its pretty much an 88 width Mantra.

Going to be a nice selection of good skis this up-coming season. Spoilt for choice for that 88-92ish underfoot single quiver Aussie ski with a bit of go in it. Aka Mindbenders 90, Vantage 90, Kendo 88, QST 92, Enforcer 88, Brahama and so on.

Also did you happen to jump on any of the Dynastar legend series?
That's a great skiing ski but doesn't sell as well as it probably should because it is UGLYYYYYY as f**k.
But the new revamp is much much more aesthetically pleasing so hopefully they still ski just as well.

Nah didn’t ski volkl or dynastar, we only skied about half of what we stock so no chance to ski others.

Yeah the 88-92 is super crowded, BC Orb is a full redesign too, more piste oriented with 88 waist, longer radius, stiffer flex and backed off tip rocker/taper. That makes it less of a ski for me personally but good for the market.

And yes no dumbing down with the Enforcer 88 or Brahma 82, full fruit just narrower.

I interviewed the global export managers for Nordica and Blizzard/Tecnica and they said as much.

Dynastar legend has always been a cult ski ( @Snorkler ) - bet I see heaps of them in Cham.

We didn’t go batshit with Nordica due to pricing, with the weaker AUD they are up there now. Mindbender pricing is tasty as is QST which has always been too low IMO for how good the ski is but we sold shitloads because if that.

Glad to hear that. Manufacturers went a bit 'off piste' for a few years there, with the idea that the widest skis in the line are for experts and the narrower skis are for intermediates. Not always and everyone, but there were examples of that. It's a concept I'm glad to see disappear.

Keen to try the Mindbender series; first time I can say that for a family of skis from K2. Happy to see they didn't try to make it overly-light, which seems to be the new theme.

I agree the high-80s to low-90s width is getting very competitive, with some great skis being made in that space. For years I had nothing in the 80s, and (suddenly) I now have three, plus a pair at 92mm.

For local conditions I think the high-70s space is perhaps being overlooked, even though it's a more appropriate width for most skiers. If I had to ditch all-but-one pair of skis I'd keep my MX78s.

Brevant! Gets too warm there too often with the exposure. But a good place to start.

You hiking GM to ski above the burnt out cablecar? Apparently it skis very differently this year without the traffic beating up the snow

Wind hold today, everything shut except Les Houches, looks to be a bit of snow up high, snow line is about 100m above town, should be snow on the ground in Argentiere.

Forecast tomorrow looks clear so hopefully head to Grands Montets if the wind does die down.

Wind affected bluebird pow day at Grands Montets today.

Best snow at the mid elevations off Bochard & Herse, the new Tabe chairlift is a winner too, we skied a few of the little gullies and got some lovely freshies while the hordes were discovering that it was pretty scouted up high.

    Going up the Aiguille tomorrow.

    They just secured the building.

Talk of the new cable car being 2-3 years off. Also talk that it will not be 'pisted' up there as the rimaye is getting harder and harder to cover after each warmer summer so it will be more like the Aiguille du Midi - a high mountain itinerary, bring glacier gear or a guide.

Oh and skied the Vallee Blanche today, high cloud with a pretty eerie melancholy feel, but not enough for the light to be flat.

Consistent 20cm of new snow with a few tracks, a bit wind-affected in spots.

We got first tram just before 9 and were back down in town by midday but didn't do a second lap due to a building foehn. Weather looks a bit messy the next few days, hopefully a bit of fresh tomorrow without too much wind that we can ski on Friday. YR/EC going mental with precip numbers in to next week but that should mellow.

It's funny how things are these dayz. You travel to Europe to test skis made in China, whilst others go to USA to test skis made in Europe. That's the world we live in.
PS pics look awesome........it's work so high stress I imagine!! :D
