A friend of mine just posted this from Vail:

Back in 2001 this chair was a fixed grip triple, and on MLK weekend it dumped after a fair dry spell, I skied in to a line about a third as big and decided that it was time to move on from Vail and spent the next 6 winters in Utah.

This was all pre-Epic pass but the seeds were being sowed.

Yeah one of the problems w USA is that people seem to appear from nowhere on a powder day at a major resort and its very congested early on.
Also the Rockies snow is often so light and airy that it seems to almost disappear as its skied on .

The yanks just seem prepared to queue, I don’t get it!

At San Fran we queued three hours (fifteen flights 5 customs officers) just to get in and Disney was no better. To Queue an hour to get on a lift faaaark that.

Back country would have been a no go as well!

    I'm sure it's epic
I'm sure the snow is remarkable
But that line would just make me angry for days and I actually ski to relax
I know the Epic Pass gets a lot of blame, but being able to jump on a plane from NY, Chicago, LA ,Washington etc not to mention the huge population boom in Colorado is probably more at the root of those insane crowds
Triple seater fixed grip aint gonna cut it no more eh because everyone can ski the Backbowls now (whether or not they actually can is for dinner discussion in your $5M faux log cabin chalet tonight)

The other factor is better snow forecasting on sites like OpenSnow and here, 24hour snow stake cams etc, people stake out the dumps and mobilise themselves.

How many in the queue do you think can actually ski the conditions? I laughed in Sunpeaks, we had a 20cm+ day and the family were begging for groomed, Zacette got it by the end of the day but it was a struggle, the plus one did get it but didn’t enjoy it (she still skis a little across the hill).

I thought one of the reasons for Vail heavily discounting Season passes was to prevent THIS? ie: gazillion day tickets on powder days but very few on other days. Perhaps everybody now has season passes and we are back to square one with everybody skiing when the snow is fresh.

Massive powder day hence gazillion day tickets sold.

I read there was massive queues on the roads in as well.

Wealthy people like other people queuing. They particularly like hiring an instructor so they can avoid the queues.

Only the Ultra wealthy can afford a Vail instructor for a day whilst the ordinary wealthy stand in line.

I know people who did this in Thredbo last year, hired a private lesson between a group of them, really just to avoid the lift line.

I had a crap lesson at Vail in January many moons ago. The crap instructor didn't care because we were the last public lesson he had that season. He was booked solid with privates to the end of the season.

Mmm. The last time I skiied anywhere affiliated with the Epic pass was nearly 15 years ago.
    It was a stepping stone.
I'm glad I did the rounds, and it shows you there is always someone ready to take your place.

I took a Kiwi mate for a drive around the farm once and there were a fair few on the property at the time
He whistled and said "What do you do with them all bro?"
    I said "Shear them"
He said "Shear them?Surely there's gotta be enough for one each?"

These pictures are why I picked Aspen for this winter. I didn't see a line of more than an dozen once the two weeks I was there. They do free pancakes on a powder day and I was the only one at Aspen Highlands taking advantage of the offer on MLK day.

My friends at Vail on the other hand...

We had snowmageddon at Apex this past week, 160 cm in 7 days including a 48 hour period in which 90 cm fell. Skied Friday at the culmination of all the powder, biggest lineup was for first chair and still the queue didn't make it to the end of the ropes. The rest of the day the wait was 5-8 chairs. Noticed quite a few day passes, indicating the word was out and people had made the road trip but still a non-existent crowd. Local knowledge ensured my son and I got tracks all day, even our last run at 2 pm when we got face shots within 300 m of the village. Still the out of town punters must have thought they'd been kissed on the dick by fairies: all that snow and no crowds.

Vail had about 115cm in 2 days. Some lifts still closed, contributing to the huge lines on open lifts.

Had seen a few of the pics and vids posted on https://www.reddit.com/r/skiing/ if anyone was interested. Here was a couple of vids to go with the static images already posted

Edit..... Hmmmm - how do you resize to show the full thing? Anyway, if you were interested hover each one and click when you can (cursor changes to a hand over the title) and it will open the reddit thread.

Sounds like they were on the opposite side of the same low pressure that smashed Apex last week. We got 27 cm in 3 hours, 90 cm in 48 hrs, 162 cm in 7 days. Nothing like our usual little hits of 5-10 cm per night.

Yep that’s a lot. When I lived there 10” overnight was a big number, but it would tend to set in for days and the best skiing was after a few days of that. Then I moved to Utah and would routinely see 18-24” overnight.
