So the Aus2015 pass is the pass that allows you access to the USA 2015/2016 Winter, not the pass that was released recently for 2016. I think Perisher/Vail have done pretty well with the website in this regard, and have separate Tabs for the 2015 and 2016 passes. The wording on the 2015 pass tab clearly states that ALL purchasers will receive their epic benefits pass prior to November.

What I am wondering, is, is that little bit of cardboard mailed to our whole family (we have 3 season passes between us) all we are going to get, and we will need to go to the ticket office in Vail / Beaver Creek or wherever and get our "Epic" US pass? I'm guessing yes, but its probably going to take a phone call to confirm it.

That article advises that Perisher was Vail's first international resort.

Serms an unlikely place to start

That was always claimed fromt he beginning. Its not new.

they choose us because we travel to the US and they want us to travel to Vail resorts exclusively!

    Thats why the chose Perisher...

Australians are their biggest market for international visitors and we typically go during school holidays which is Vail's quiet period. We stay longer and spend more than their other international visitors too.

They'll find that out this and next northern Hemisphere winter. RFID will tell them all they need to know about freedom/Epic pass holders.

We booked our first overseas trip this year. Looked at all the options and most (if not all) of the resorts covered by the epic pass were extremely expensive. Europe ended up being the cheapest, what I would have saved on the ski pass I've saved way more on accommodation and airfares.

I have to admit - my other half (not me obviously!) got caught up in the whole saving money buying an EPIC pass thing. We now have the most expensive holiday ever booked in the US this January. I am keeping all my fingers crossed that the US has good early snow.

I suspect that the sensible way to deal with an Epic Pass is to look at whether the cost of a season pass makes sense for use in Australia, and to treat the US component as a fortuitous bonus.

    This exactly!

Its pretty much what I did for the Mountain Collective last year... I was already doing 2 days at Thredbo with a group of friends. for $100 more I got free skiing in the US!

We had a mix of accoms... It def still wasn't an expensive holiday!

When I look at ski destinations, lift ticket pricing and season pass bonuses are very very low on my list.

FWIW the resorts on the Epic pass by and large are pretty ordinary if you are a strong off piste skier looking for steep terrain and high snowfall. If you're looking for homogenised family mcskiing they're great.

Mountain Collective has some great resorts on it but unless you're committing to a road trip like @Ozgirl did it's hard to take advantage of.

    Exactly!

To get the 'free' skiing you had to move around! Which we were happy to do. But not sure if we will do it again!

If we weren't going to Europe in 2017 the US would be back on the cards then, and very possibly is the last time we would buy a season pass in Australia... so any US ski trip beyond that we will prob by an early bird season pass and stay in the one place!

But who knows what will happy in the market in 2 years...

Who knew what has happened in the last 12months would have happened!

Maybe more surprises are in store for us Aussie skiers!

Sure, but there are plenty for whom any combination of Vail, Beaver Creek, Breck, Keystone, A-Basin, Park City/Canyons, Heavenly and Northstar would be terrific. Not one person (other than me) in my extended family of 15 could ski anything other than single diamond runs.

And then of course there is Kirkwood.

BTW, I do agree with your general comment regarding ticket/pass pricing. It should not be the determining factor in destination choice.

Yeah Kirkwood is great, that's the definite outlier in the Epic pass resorts. Canyons is OK too.

I know it's a bit off topic, but another alternative in the States to Epic and Mountain Collective is the Max Pass. You get 5 days at each of the following resorts:
    Steamboat
    Big Sky
    Brighton
    Copper
    Cypress
    Crystal
    Mt Bachelor
    Winter Park
    Summit at Snoqualine
    Lee Canyon

And also some of the best in the east, such as Tremblant, Stratton, Sugarloaf, Sunday River, Killington.

Cost is US$719. Pretty good I reckon, because road tripping is more viable given that you get 5 days at each.

Great Pass if you were not skiing locally.

I chose Perisher Epic for AUD $750 because it of what it offered at Perisher. Getting 23 days at 4 class resorts in USA, is just cream.

Yeah for the amount of local skiing you do $750 is a no-brainer regardless.

Base - Frisco/Silverthorne (good value, central), hire car, A Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge - (about 10 miles), Vail, Beaver Creek a little bit further (30 miles or thereabouts). Great fun, you'll have a ball.

Having skied Europe for the first time last winter, I'll never go out of my way to ski North America again. I'm a fan of certain hills in Colorado and BC but Europe has bigger mountains and a more interesting traveller experience with the food, language etc.

Also, Vail is the most expensive, up-itself, overrated ski hill on the planet.

Oh and by the way Astro, you may be looking for a park in Thredbo, but I'm still looking for a steep long run in Perisher!:out:

For me, it was a toss up between Europe and USA. At around $1000 I have already got transport to the States, lift tickets and travel insurance.

As for 'Vail is the most expensive, up-itself, overrated ski hill on the planet' this may be a bit of a culture shock for us humble Perisher skiers. Others may fit in better.

Ah, the old Thredbo skiers are w**kers card. Well I don't live on Sydney's north shore, eastern suburbs or trendy inner west. I have beat up planks, ripped ski clothes, $12 gloves and and an old hatchback. But if skiing a superior hill to Perisher makes me a w**ker, then bring it!

Hey there should be a name for the law that turns every thread on ski.com.au into a Perisher vs Thredbo rant eventually.

In all seriousness DidSurfSnowSki, if you're lucky enough to score a powder day at Vail, the back bowls are great but make sure you're on first chair. Enjoy the trip.

Oh, and Astro, that was a typically evil trick from that dark evil lord Ian D!

Will the TPP give them more leverage in making demands to government for regulatory concessions, particularly when NPWS has regs and rules where conservation is currently given greatest weight, unlike Vic resorts where in an RMB other issues such as economic development, public access and recreation are accorded similar, if not greater, weight than conservation. Especially the land swap between Parks and FCRM on the shores of Rocky Valley Dam near the Sun Valley area going up toward the dam wall.

Fly was cast and was taken :)

I can't ski powder anyways, so knee deep powder everyday would be wasted on me. Vail resorts fit the bill for my current skiing level.

I'll have to take lots of pictures.

EDIT: You've really piqued my interest now. A ski field that is so bad you'd never return. Must be awful. Must go and see what the fuss is all about.

I have no desire to ski there either - but each to their own!

DSNS may love it... especially if it is his first resort he goes to.

There are just a heck of a lot of hills that are (IMO) better and where staff (one in particular) and businesses have a better attitude.

Well the beauty about the Epic pass is that if you don't like the hill you are on, go and ski on another one.

I don't know. The shuttle between Vail and Beaver Creek was so badly organised that every bus that arrived at my stop for about an hour was full. And when I politely suggested to the "controller" that he radio to get an empty bus direct to our stop his head exploded. Actually, I forgot him. That is two staff in particular.

FCRM is the Falls Creek Resort Management Board.

An RMB is an Alpine Resort Management Board, a peculiar system in Vic where the lands excised from a national park and becomes a fiefdom of political board appointees appointed by the Minister and then a few paper shufflers in the office with an exaggerated sense of their own importance. Among them will be some dedicated staff who enjoy being of service to the community, as well as being up on the hill.

Parks is Parks Victoria. Parks usually has authority over the lands outside the (Victorian) alpine resort boundaries. When it does not, the neighbouring stakeholder will often be the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. Formerly known as DEPI or DSE.

NPWS is the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the authority over the area commonly known as Perisher Resort. Perisher has defined lease areas, as do the other properties. NPWS are strict with proposed developments and conservation matters.
