Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment
Parks and Wildlife Service

Temporary closure of Ben Lomond road

The Parks and Wildlife Service has advised that the Ben Lomond Road will be temporarily closed as from 7pm tonight to enable urgent stabilisation work to be completed on a rock at Jacobs Ladder.
PWS Northern Region manager Chris Colley said the road has been temporarily closed as a result of geotechnical advice which was sought following observation of recent movement in a large rock above the road. Geotechnical advice recommended stabilisation works be carried out as soon as possible.
The stabilisation works are planned for tomorrow, however this work is weather dependent and the current forecast is not favourable. The road will be re-opened as soon as the stabilisation works are completed.
PWS has notified stakeholders including Ben Lomond snow businesses.
People intending to visit Ben Lomond are advised to check the PWS and other relevant websites for updates on the status of the road.

This reminds me of the time about 15 years ago when a landslide blocked the road to Mt Buller. I was up there at the time and rather than go back to work, I was "forced" to spend an extra 3 days skiing.

And there was nothing my employer could do about it.

Latest update from PWS re Jacobs Ladder is that the road will remain CLOSED until further notice. Works have been undertaken today to stabilize the rock on the Watchtower, however they are waiting for the all clear from the engineers before re-opening the road.

Hi All
Just got back from working on the Ladder with Parks and Gradco
The Rock has been stabilised and the engineer has signed off on the work completed.
The team from Gradco and parks did an exceptional job working in extreme conditions ( beleive me I know) and to watch the Adam working on the ropes on the rock face was purely awesome. Thanks Guys
As a result of the endeavours today it has been indicated that the road will open tomorrow morning at aprox 9.30 am once the grader has been through. In light of the prevailing circumstances Parks Have conducted a risk assessment into the reopening and it will most likely be limited to daylight hours and absolutely no stopping on the ladder. To ensure that no vehicles stop on the ladder all vehicles may be required to fit chains.

Hi All,
An unstable boulder on Jacobs Ladder at "Gateway" has forced the temporary closure of the road at the bottom Car Park As of last night contractors have stabilised the boulder allowing the road to be reopened. It has been indicated by Parks that the road will be closed during hours of darkness until further notice and special conditions will be in place at other times.
Please obey all Signs and Instructions

To all those who have had the chance to get up the mountain on Saturday and Sunday - if you see a Parks and Wildlife employee - say thank you. Also say thanks to Barry and Stummo of AE.

Without all of these people working above and beyond in conditions that would have been incredibly unpleasant to say the least you would not have been able to enjoy this snowfall.

Parks and Wildlife did a fantastic job of organising a fix and working with all the organisations on the mountain to minimise the risks and logistical problems.

And Dont for get the boys from Gradco they were literally the ones at the coal face, The're the earth moving contractors that work out of St leonards who not only grade the road from snow but invariably do all the Summer maintenance on the Road and ladder, so thanks to you guys for a great Job well done.

Hi All,

Just wanted to say well done to all who were involved in the rock stabilisation work carried out last weekend. Without the hard cold hours by PWS, Gradco and Alpine Enterprises (Barrie and Stummo) there was no way that there would have been any snow fun for anyone on last weekend.

A big congratulations to you all.
