yeh I'm taking my laptop over so Ill put up a few reports with photos, taking my newly acquired helmet cam so I'll see how that goes as well. [IMG]

not sure about future, weekend after I get back so I dunno if I will be bothered. Unless my friend scores me some free tickets, but it's not looking likely at this stage.

Will do. Can't guarantee there will be any beers left though.

Now to just work out the bit to get me to Myoko. Probably should have learnt some useful Japanese phrases.

[IMG] if you're using trains (which I am) then hyperdia.com is your friend. Gives you times and costs. I will be training from Ueno > Nagano > Myoko. I recommend pre-booking this when you arrive in Narita. Also, I’m pretty sure you’re staying at the same hotel as me and if I remember correctly Amy said the hotel will pick you up from the train station in Myoko. Could be worth sending her an email.

As long as there is Kirin left on tap for my arrival I will be happy!!!

Wondering if one of the experts can give me some rail pass info, without me having to trawl through all the info here and work it out.

Getting a shuttle from Narita to Hakuba, so no worries there.

Then leave Hakuba on the 18th for Kyoto.
Kyoto to Tokyo on the 20th
Fly home on the 25th (Narita).

Should i be getting a JR Pass, or should i just be paying for each leg and the travel around Tokyo individually?

Your help would be much appreciated!

Think i might have answered my own question from this Hyperdia site.

    Nagano - Kyoto
    Kyoto - Tokyo

    together would be 23,550 jpy.

    JR pass is 28,300jpy.

So assuming we use 5,000 jpy worth of travel in Tokyo over the remaining few days, we're better off getting a JR pass. Assume we'd easily use that much, its only something like $10 a day.

    Does that sound right?

Also, it doesnt look like a Shink runs from Nagano to Nagoya, so its a slow old (4.5 hour) trip down to Kyoto.

And is it worth paying the extra $120 for the first class (green) pass?

Got the trains sorted, smitty. I'm staying in Shinjuku so from there (at sparrow's fart) to Nagano then Myoko.

We are staying in the same place. Please keep the noise down.

I'm pretty sure a JR east pass won't cover Kyoto.
    see here
    http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/routemaps/shinkansen.html

Hakuba to Kyoto won't be on a JR east pass.
    better off doing individually

    ahh sorry for 28300
I see you mean all japan pass.
    my fault

I looked extensively in JR pass versus pay as you go. Of course you have the added benefit of not having to buy tickets with a JR pass but it ended up a bit cheaper for me not buying a JR pass. I also couldn't have been bothered organising one if it did come out cheaper.

Green car is not worth it Chuck. Done that leg a few times and it's not a slow old train. Nice and comfy and has some excellent scenery along the way. I'd pay as you go and spend the rest on beer [IMG]

Man, this is the hard bit - the last few days. I fly out of Melbourne Sunday 6am to Goldy with J*, then Goldy to Narita. Meet the man with the sign that says Pete and straight on a bus to Morino Lodge, Hakuba. Coming back on the 14th to Tokyo, fly out on the 15th at 8pm. Any thoughts on the best way to get from Hakuba to Tokyo?

    Read the whole thread, but:

    - Alpico bus from Happo Bus Terminal (Hakuba) to Shinjuku (Tokyo) 4700yen.

    - Alpico bus from Happo Bus Terminal (Hakuba) to Nagano 1400yen. Shinkansen (bullet train) Nagano - Tokyo 7990yen.

    Hey Sandy,

Some friends want to buy avalanche safety gear (transceiver, probe, shovel). Do you think its cheaper in Tokyo or Aus?

I've looked at Avi gear in Tokyo, and it doesn't seem very cheap to me. I can take a look within the next week, if you like.

Fattwins will know how much they are at Hakuba, for comparison.

We could buy the gear in Niseko too, not sure if it will be cheaper getting it before we come.

What are the requirements for hiring a car in Japan? Are there age restrictions? Do you need an international licence? I would have a read of wiki, but it's blocked here at work... [IMG] what the [auto-censor] have you been putting on there Ian? [IMG]

You need an international licence. Not sure of age, but you may need to be above 20 to hire....

Has anyone been to Kiroro Snow World? I understand it's smallish, but would it be good for 2 or 3 days? Are there accommodation options? All I know is that I stopped there for food on the way to Niseko a few years back.

Heads up - Light green jacket, grey pants, black beanie and usually Red Oakley Goggles - that's me - say hi if you see me on the hill. We leave at sparrows tomorrow morning.

My +1 and I would like to thank everyone on this site for the fantastic insight into this trip - truly invaluable.
