For interests sake, travelex selling yen at 68.6 at the airport.....just goes
to show why you NEVER walk up and buy at the airport!

Just arrived in Sutton Place Ueno after a HUGE day. Delays getting out of Cooly airport due to rain and then just the adventure of catching trains in Japan with only english speakers in the group. [IMG] was fun though. On the 9.26am shink tomorrow and pretty excited.

I was at Sutton Place Friday night.

The announcements on the Shinkansens are very good - japanese and english as well as the display at the end of the carriage.

I was putting my skis either at the end of the carriage, behind the last row of seats or in the overhead rack.

I'm heading off on the 21/2 for 10 days in Nowaza then two nights in Tokyo ( at Sutton Place in Uneo as well!!)

Reading the weather thread it seems temps can move around a 15 C range.

Thinking about packing...So what to most wear on the hill?

Around Nozawa town I would just wear jeans, decently waterproof shoes, a t-shirt and a warm Jacket (I have a snow jacket just for this).
So when you go to dinner/bars you can just take the jacket off.
If its really, really cold you could also wear a hoodie under the jacket.

On the actual mountain I would wear thermal top and bottom, a fleece and ski/snowboard outerwear.
If its really hot I just stuff my fleece in my backpack (I doubt it will get that warm though)

Back home. Thanks to everyone on the forum for all the advice which makes for a great trip.

    Some accommodation feedback -

In Hakuba we stayed at Double Black and can highly recommend. Great lodge and Sarah, Sean and the team really look after you. Re all the earlier talk of distances in Hakuba - I wouldn't want to walk to the lift, but no need to with the DB shuttle service. Good restaurants 5-10 min walk up in the hill, or down into Happo village - or DB will drive you further afield.

In Nozawa we stayed at the Chitosekan (again). A traditional ryokan run by charming non-English speaking owners next to the Oyu Onsen and at the bottom of the stairs leading to the moving walkway. Shinji at IXSM Travel can arrange bookings. He has an office in Nozawa now and can organise tours etc - a very nice young Japanese who could do with more business!

Thanks again for all the help in planning - not sure if we will be back for a fifth trip in 2011, but if we are am sure there will be more questions.

Hi, looking for advice on first trip to Japan. Will be in Tokyo around 23 March with my son. We thought we might get in 3-4 days skiing ( both intermediate standard).

Limited time so needs to be closeish to Tokyo.

    I have been recommended Hakuba.

Will the snow be OK still at that time? Any other better ideas?

    Thanks

Many places have 3m bases so no problem for March. Yuzawa is super easy to get to from Tokyo about 90 minutes direct on the bullet train.

After having spent the last 2 nights in Tokyo We just want to say a big thanks to Sandy for recommending the New City Hotel in Shinjuku way back in this thread [IMG]

Very comfortable and really close to everything we wanted to do and no hassles getting to and from the Train Station in Shinjuku as they run a free shuttle bus!

Breakfast is extra but its all you can eat for about 1300 yen each!!

Definately a great place to base yourself in Tokyo..short train trip over to the Ski Shops and basically anywhere else you want to go and with a JR Pass even less hassles!!

So thanks again from both Poppy & Myself [IMG] [IMG]

If you catch the 7am Shinkansen(Bullet Train) from Tokyo station, you can get to Echigo Yuzawa Station in 72 minutes. 15 Min by taxi to Kagura (Mitsumata Ropeway)

Trip has been really good. No epic dumpage but a few days of 20cm of pretty dry snow, as well as a BC tour made it well worth it. Plus I always enjoy coming back to Japan and trying out new areas.

Lucked out a little at Nozawa...Base is deep and I had one morning of 20cm of dry fresh snow up around Yamabiko (which was great fun!) but I was hoping for more snow down low to test out a few areas which are moguled at the moment. Will just have to test it out another time! I'll put up a more detailed TR when I get home.

Haha yeh I saw the FM times, would be a fun day but my friends are all doing soundwave this weekend and I just don't want to spend the money...more savings for Japan next year! [IMG]

Seen a few references to Yamabiko around the place and of course made a number of trips on various sections of the Yamabiko Shinkansen as well as the Max-Yamabiko (double decker).

Looking it up it apparently means “Echos from a distant mountain".

Had a great week at Morino Lodge in Hakuba. Not the greatest of snow but still good. A fantastic couple of days cycling around Kyoto and just landed in Tokyo. Hotel is above Shibuya station, currently looking out over that crazy mental intersection. Looking forward to the next 5 days! No more time for internet, time to get amongst it!!!

I've had a read and I think I understand, but I thought I would check with others who have done it before. Is an international drivers licence what you need in order to hire a car in Japan?

Yes that's right you do need an international license. You can go down to an RACV shop or equivalent (depending on which state your in) to get one. Shouldn't take long - take your current driving license, passport photo and maybe a utility bill (can't remember if you need that, but safer than sorry) costs about $15-25 and lasts for a year. You need to then carry that on you with your normal license when driving.
