Seki Onsen.... that place has left a lasting memory, mostly of falling over an avalanche barrier I didn't see. Here is the lift line

Hakuba was a real let down this year, we arrived during a heatwave and got rain and slush almost every day.

Yokohama, Japan, Melb. Expat.
Timing is everything.....

But if you know when the time is, you have a better chance at hitting the big snow.

My rule of thumb:

- Optimum time for reliable big dumps in central Japan, along with a good base: Last 3 weeks in January.
- Next best: 1st week January, first 3 weeks in February.

This year: Last 3 weeks in January, first 2 weeks in February were mostly nuking. (from around 9th Jan - 18th Feb)

Other things to consider:
If you're going to Hokkaido & central Japan in February, go to Hokkaido last.
If you're going to several places in central Japan mid/late February, go to the lowest places first, higher places later. (e.g. Myoko first, Shiga Kogen later)

Cheers, we clearly did things the wrong way around, but it couldn't be helped with the people that were coming (everyones getting married this year it seems). Will know better for next year

Was talking to the guys at MSS last night. Apparently when they rode Seki about a month they riding on a ridge next to the powerlines which were about waist high at that time. Just as well they didn't catch an edge!

Most people seemed to have done their time already this year. Come April might be time for the 2012/13 Japow thread.

Thanks.

Anyone else seen this landslide in Joetsu region of Niigata? Started back on the 7th and has been slowly creeping down since then. Taken out t least 11 houses so far but as it is pretty slow moving no one has been injured or killed thankfully.

For those coming in April the JR East Pass Special (Flexible 3-day) will be sold from Sunday, April 1 (to Saturday, June 30, 2012.)

Been watching that landslide on the news each morning. At least it's moving slowly. There was a huge one in Myoko about 30 years ago. Some of my wife's school friends died in it. If you're ever up at Ikenotaira there's a museum near the pond that has some information about it. It's a nice little short trip to see if anyone's having a morning or afternoon off when in Myoko.

Thank you all for the helpful info on Japan skiing.
A newby who with hubby just had 7 glorious days at shiga kogen.
Grabbed the jetstar bussiness at $ 1200 return each, much more enjoyable than economy at same price.
Stayed at prince east hotel, meals included which saved us a packet as the meals were quite pricey there however very nice and western and Japanese offered.
The skiing was wonderful and since both of us are green easy blues we found shiga perfect with plenty of options from the very top of mountains and lots of wide long runs to choose from.
Best of all was the hospitality of the Japanese people who profusely thanked us repeatedly for choosing their country to vist when they desperately need tourists to help their struggling economy.
Add the easiness of travel by the train system that works like clockwork and the quickness of the bullet train all affordable withjr east rail flexy pass, and 3great days in Tokyo trying small family run restaurants .
Wow, will be going back again very soon!

Funny that, I dropped the skis into the local store this morning to have a full service as they were worse the wear from the odd stones in US, and the proprietor was talking about plans for himself and any interested customers to head back to Shiga Kogen at the end of January.

Talked to FIL today about slide in Itakura. Apparently they can`t do much to stop it at present. Wife`s grandmother lives nearby and local residents are nervous about it spreading.

How was the snow quality tanyg?

Yeah TJ, looks like winter has got a second wind over the last few days. Might be worth getting a cheap fare and coming for Easter anyone thinking about it. Can combine skiing and cherry blossoms

Also the special JR East 3-day Pass will be available.

I should be getting pretty good value out of my 4 day pass.
Narita - Nagano (Y11,080)
Nagano - Ueno (Y7,770)
Ueno - Shin-Aomori (Y16,170)
Shin-Aomori - Ueno (Y16,170)

Total value of Y51,190 for Y20,000.

Good job Heinz. The real value of the East Pass is when it's used for going up north like that. To Nagano and around is no saving - just convenience.

The 3 day pass is only 10,000 so that's great value - even if you're only heading out skiing in Nagano.

Bit of a long shot but let's see. Hopefully someone might know.

Taking my daughter to Spaceworld and the Fukuoka Dome for baseball as a birthday present in July. We will get back into Haneda late from Kitakyushu - maybe about 10. I will then pick up a car and start driving toward Myoko as we don't want to stay in Tokyo for the night. I'm intending to drive all the way through but (as a back up plan) if I get tired I'd like to stop at a 24 hour onsen. We can can crash for a few hours on the tatami in the relax room then continue on. I know a few around the place but none on the way from Tokyo. Anyone know of any - maybe somewhere between Gunma and Nagano?

Hey Hackski, Would that be Belco S & B? I went with with him and a few others in 2011 and had a ball!

The season is still going strong here. Its been puking over the last couple of days. Freshies on every run today with hardly anyone around. More due tonight and then Sunday is looking like clearing up. I would say that will be the end of the snow down low but spring skiing should be good for the month with this top up.
