The only thing that is wrong is go pro videos generally featuring average riders in average terrain and average snow. Hey if that's your thing, just voicing my opinion.

Average rider + GoPro + average terrain + internet exposure + praise = stoked average rider and nicely distracted office worker who is supposed to be doing something more productive

It's not such a bad equation is it Smitty?

That's the great thing about snowsports - stoke has nothing to do with ability

Tip to GoPro owners - leave the stick behind sometimes and follow someone or point it backwards at someone behind you.
Alternatively try it on still mode, dig for gold and crop aggressively - at 1080 the stills are not bad

There were more vids on sticks than you could shake a stick at when we were at Nozawa in Feb. It actually looked quite comical looking down from the chairs sometimes.

Everyones got one, some count more than others.

The stick vid I really don't get, but still better than nothing, I know how to hit stop if I get bored!

Yeah I thread I started last march or so post Hakuba trip.
So many people riding groomers with buddies with the go pro sticks.
They skied/Rode the worst lines cause they were so conscious of the camera...
It was pathetic.
Call me old fashioned but i'd rather see one pic like this.
I can mind ride this till the cows come home..

Indeed. Those middle aged flappers we saw at 47 were hilarious. Go pro mounted to a stick riding like kooks over the box and rail. Who would want to watch that? Give me one well positioned pic like above any day. I'd take that over a 5 min go pro vid showing the tips of someone's skis.

That pic is a gem. The sun, the light, the snow. Hell you could have someone snowploughing down the face and it would still be great. Straight tr the poolroom

You need to get Sandy tp post some of the pics he took at 47. Not sure if he took pics of some middle aged guys or not but he should have some good shots of some young guys.

You guys miss the point. A well positioned pic still takes someone to take it, POV is single handed something. I still don't get pole cams, I wouldn't ruin a run for go pro footage myself.

Nobody is saying POV is as good as a well positioned pic, even of someone on what is made to look like a bunny slope!

What point? A pic takes a few moments to set up whereas go pro is just hours of footage of endless ski tips?

The point that you NEED someone to give up something to stop and take a picture, even if it is just a few moments, but normally it is stopping in a spot that is better skied.

I have done a lot of both, one takes effort, one does not, The rewards are proportional for sure, but don't pretend the skier taking a pic (or a non POV vid) is not giving up something to get an action shot, they are.

You give no regard for the fact that delivering a picture takes far more effort. In fact you say it takes "a few moments"to set up, without any thought to the other sacrifices one must make to get a good shot.

Your opinion that POV footage is crap is simply a barrow that you are pushing to get a bite and not even part of the conversation I am addressing, but I am flattered that you keep trying.

And then this one time, in Japan, we sat around the table after a big day out on the slopes, and stopped bickering about if POV was King or crap and instead drank Chu-Hi, marvelled at the powder still falling, and laughed till the early hours....

Far more effort? rubbish. Pics take no time to take. Anyway, I clarified my point before "Decent pics > nothing > go pro movies"

As to the bold, if that really was true it would appear to be working

Alas it's not what im trying to do, however my point still stands, POV is generally crap.

So has anyone got plans to sneak in some time on the hill(s) before its all over for another year? I am keeping a close eye on hokkaido forecasts and the other eye on reward flight availability... Hoping for one more Siberian blast to freshen things up and make it worthwhile.

PS. I don't like GoPro vids, just makes me green with envy!

Pushed the trip back Bro? We're now considering mid-late feb also.
Yeah airfares over chrissy ..for me wifey and Pstar would be just shy of 5K..
vs half that ( if the 2 4 one deal happens)
Plus to be honest, with family in tow marchs is better
they want uncrowded slopes, lodge and sun etc.

So my bro moves house and sets up new internet and get a box of rice as a present from the internet company. Buy internet, get rice. Only in Japan.

When I moved into my apartment in Japan, the fridge was fully stocked with food and drink!!!! Ok, that was a bit unusual, I think!!!

Shiga Kogen was good. Not too many people around. Beautiful sunny days, a touch "firm" in the morning but not excessive, and the slush in the afternoons was not too bad because of the elevation. The ski all the way back from Yakebitaiyama to Maruike was a delight..... around every bend or aspect was a fabulous but different view. Apart from some memorable powder days, this past weekend was definitely one of my most enjoyable times at Shiga Kogen.
