No new snow in this area overnight, so I decided to head over to Dynaland/Takasu. There was tonnes of people there, the carpark was insane, but once you got away from the park and the main runs there was no one about. The snow was good, despite it looking like no new snow for almost a week. I was able to find some untracked lines through the trees, that were sort of roped off and sort of tracked, so I took the risk. You had to scope them out though as many of the good tree runs would end up getting you creeked if you didnt cut across early enough. Takasu was better than Dynaland, which was too flat and would have sucked in fresh snow. Takasu would be really good with up to half a meter of fresh, lots of tree lines that while they arent that long are still nice and steep and gulllied well. The trees are also spaced well. There are lots of snowboarders at both places, I reckon around 80-90 boarders, so I was in the minority which is fine with me. The bottom restaurant was hilarious, the sheer number of people there was off the charts. But the food was good. I would hit up Takasu again, but only on a 50cms day, as the ticket is 4800Y and parking is 1000Y per car.

We took the long way home and I did a quick stop at Hiruganokogen, which is a really simple beginner course absolutely packed with beginners. It's a single big open run cut into the side of the hill that wouldnt be more than 25deg anywhere, maybe off near the side near the trees. I picked up an arvo lift ticket for 1000Y, so I did about an hour here and then called it a day. With no new snow it wasnt going to be anything amazing. There is a good onsen at the bottom you can try, but I didnt have time and needed to get back into Takayama for some food.

If the snow comes tonight then ill hit up some steeper places tomorrow, if not then i'll assess in the morning and see where i can check out. I really enjoy the 1/2 lift joints more than the bigger places like Dynaland/Takasu so it might be a case of taking the 158 and seeing what I find.

Verm... I hope you get some fresh soon..
I personally prefer takasu over dynaland aswell.
I have been hanging out in nishinomiya (Osaka) for the past couple of days and will be hitting naeba/kagura Monday...
    The forecast looks pretty good!!!

Today was one of the best days ive ever skied. I've put down 50cm+ days in Japan before, and this was not one of them, but the day was still one of the best i've experienced.

i hit up Honoki, near the pass that separates Matsumoto and Takayama. The pass is usually closed during winter i'm told, and today I would almost guarantee it would have been. It was tough work getting to this place, that is cut into the side of the hill. While the resort is nothing spectacular, or huge, they have some good steep runs, including a great run that is accessed via a 5min hike from the top lift, which guarantees you fresh tracks all day long. I assume a lift used to go up to this point but it has been removed. They also have a very relaxed policy on tree skiing, which is great because there are some great gullies to hit up, without the worry of getting creeked. I didnt see one creek all day. The report said around 160cms of snow, but there was buckets more than this. They must measure compacted groomed snow for their depth.

The snow was some of the best i've skied. 30-50cms of fresh snow, with some windloaded aspects carrying more than that, I was armpit deep a couple of times. Being a Sunday there was competition for lines, and as soon as someone else saw you hit something they followed. There are some good lines under lifts and visible from lifts, but anything that you couldnt see from a lift or other vantage point remained pretty much untracked. Most of the action happens off the 1 lift, which accesses a couple of open and relatively steep runs, that were moguled up but the fresh snow made they quite enjoyable, even though I was punching through the odd time or 2 per run. This lift also has a really nice run under it and accesses the hike you take to the top run/tree area. You can also access 2 great gullies from this lift that have really nicely spaced trees perfect for skiing. It's good they have a relaxed policy on tree skiing and have obviously gladed some tree runs because everywhere else is way too thick to ski through.

On a week day after 30cms+ this place would be magic and it would be all to yourself. Lift ticket was 3800Y including onsen, I believe it's 3000Y during the week. The onsen is pretty damn good, it's about 3 stories up in the middle of the bottom load area and looks out over the base runs and most of the mountain. There is an indoor and outdoor onsen, it's really good I highly recommend it.

The drive from Takayama is good, it took me about 40mins driving like a grandma, with only a couple of sharpish turns. One of the easier places to access from Takayama. I'm glad I went here today and Takasu/Dynaland yesterday. This place is definitely one to keep in mind if you are in the area and get good snow.

Nice report Verm. Your and also Donza, Sandy et al on the spot reports are much appreciated.

I had a great day at Noz today. Ive been here for many a powder day over the last 8 years but today was definitely one of the best. Maybe it was because they have been few and far between over the last 3 weeks or so.

Certainly needed to look for the steeper runs as getting bogged was a big risk.

Lawlzer. Just call it the ski run on the side of the hill. Tomorrow's one will be even smaller, hopefully with no one around.

Sitting in Taipei airport after an overnighter from Brisbane on EVA air. First time I've flown with them and generally pretty impressed. Plenty of leg room and seat space (for economy) and there was barely any noise from the engines of the plane so got a few good hours of rest. Taipei airport, like most Asian places as I've come to expect is a bit odd. It has a pretty poor airport layout with crazy long corridors (feels like it should belong back in the 80's) slapped together with themed waiting lounges from hello kitty to woodology (don't ask). Just got to wait a couple hours for my connecting flight to Sapporo and then it's game on!

KL LCCT is not great. A couple of good cafes. I usually curl up with the laptop and free wifi at the Coffee Bean. If you have a few hours to burn there's a bus to KL that takes about an hour and only costs about $2.50

been trawling through this thread for the better part of an hour as a punter's guide / FAQ for japan ski, notwithstanding I could really use some help in planning a trip.

    Here are the dot points
Travel dates: 3-15th Feb... ~1-2 days visit family in Fukuyama and ~ 9-10 days skiing, travelling alone.
Previous Japan ski: 4 weeks Niseko Hirafu and Rusutsu in 2009 - loved every moment aside from the rare aussie larrikin
Looking for: Int/Adv runs with steep gradients, plenty of off-piste, tree runs permitted, night skiing, easy accessibility from lodging…
Not worried about: Apres' ski (they say do that in NA/EU), language barriers (can carry a broken conversation with a local), food (I could live off the Seicomart)

What are my best options for a 10-day or split 5-day experience?
Assuming I fly into Osaka KIX airport, what transport pass and arrangements would best facilitate KIX-Fukuyama-Ski (location undecided)-KIX itinerary?Because I'm only there for under 2 weeks I've been searching Honshu fields mainly - Hakuba, Shiga Kogen, Nozawa Onsen... however I'm reading a lot about their restrictions compared to the relative laissez-faire Niseko… am I obliged to try Sapporo again? Thanks in advance for the assistance… I'm doing a medical program and worked double shifts all summer… I've just got to get over there before the window shuts once more...

The problem is that you're flying into KIX and then will be in Hiroshima. There are a couple of fields to go to around there but I would also think about checking out some places in Gifu. Scroll up a bit and see what Vermillion is doing. Otherwise an easy option is just grab a flight out of KIX to Hokkaido.

Just realised we are traveling from Tokyo to Nozawa on Feb 10, which is the day before the foundation day national holiday. Is this likely to present any problems? - Somehow I can't see the Japanese taking a sickie and making a long weekend of it :). Are there likely to be many traveling for a 1 day break mid week?
