    It won't be a problem....

If they take Monday off to ski, it will be along with the weekend plus the Tuesday, so hardly anyone will travel on Monday.

The Japanese can't take a sickie on the Monday, because they don't get sick leave!!!!!! I suppose an annual leave day will be on the cards, along with a day trip by train on the Tuesday. There are good one day JR/lift deals, but these are mostly to the Yuzawa area.

I saw those barrel sakes as well in Niigata.
The missus bought sake in a snowman bottle on naeba!
I have two small bottles already.
Will have to do a trip to the local supermarket for another bottle before I leave tomorrow eve.

This is the view out of our place for the next couple of months at least. Not that I want to make anyone feel bad.

Then again, I'm sure you're all earning a s###load more than me...

will you pack them in your luggage then? I was told you could not take liquids as carry on unless you purchased them at the duty free at the airport...

You need to pack liquids not bought past security in your luggage. We do this for our duty free booze as it is way cheaper to buy it in the local rather than at the airport. Also if flying Jetstar and you need to go through security again you do not loose it. Sometimes we need to add things to our checked luggage where we change flights.

Not all electronics...... you need to know your prices.

You can use Kakaku.com to find the cheapest prices..... sometimes 25% cheaper than BicCamera or Yodobashi.

Name brand memory & memory sticks are cheaper at Akihabara(back streets) than Australia, but don't buy in BicCamera or Yodobashi..... I think they make a lot of their profit on cameras by adding expensive memory to the deal.

Just looking into JAL baggage limits and ski's are allowed if bag is total dimensions lxbxh =203cm.
Calc that mine is about 230 ( 180 x 30 x 20 ish ) so up for about $300 excess baggage . Planned to stuff ski bag with jackets , pants etc .....Anyone have any previous experience with JAL ? If I'm up for the excess may as well just hire some big boppers on the mountain. Cheers.

Just depends on the check in staff. Last time I flew JAL was via Qantas from Melbourne and was checked through so they didn't even measure it. On the way home, they measured it (was over) had little meeting, measured again and then just let it go.

Question without notice: can anyone recommend a nice hotel (think Shangri-La, Westin, Intercontinental, etc) in Tokyo that is reasonably close to a station so easy to use as a base for three days? I'm keen on springing for a nice place as it's close to Valentine's Day, our first as a married couple, and it will likely be our last like this for another 18 years... But, I don't want to be forced to take a taxi to get anywhere, and I don't want to be stuck in the business district. We are after somewhere we can walk to get a coffee and breakfast, and within reach of 'interesting' stuff. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Monterey La Soeur or Solaria Nishitetsu, both in Ginza
both fairly close to the train, not quite as busy as the Shinjuku or Shibuya areas
there's not much of Tokyo that's not within reach - transport there is orders of magnitude better than here

Don't know 5 star hotels in Tokyo, but anywhere near a subway station or JR station which menas just abouy anywhere would be a reasonable base. Lots of different 'interesting' parts of Tokyo.
