So I am already deep into planning next season in Japan, have sorted out duration (4-6 weeks) not decided on the dates as yet but most likely jan-early feb.:woohoo:
My sons will be with me and I have decided that some avalanche training is needed for future peace of mind. No doubt they will be traveling over there on their own in the future. (hopefully dad can tag along and not cramp their style)LOLROFL
Can anybody suggest a contact for this training in Nozawa or surrounds.
I have searched through the site but can't seem to find anyone. I did come accross Damian in various threads and have PM'd him 2-3 weeks ago with no reply but realize he doesn't frequent the site often.

I have just put flights on hold last night in and out of Sapporo in Dec/Jan! Now just got to decide if I am happy and lock them down!

buy a copy of staying alive in avalanche terrain by bruce tremper and study it, especially chapter 3.
This will teach you everything and more that you will learn in an ast1 course.
Buy all your gear, transceiver, shovel and 3m+ probe. You also need a good pack that fits all this gear.

Now you ha e the gear and the knowledge you need to do some

*sorry so annoying trying to post on this forum from my samsung.

You need to put it into practise with some beacon searches and generally being in the mountains using your avalanche brain.
Since I will be in the area Im happy to do a days practise with you and anyone else who wants to play hide the beacon.
    Its always good to refresh.

haha. Its homework but if you have the desire to learn about avalanches its really easy to do. Make sure your replacements read it too

Thats my theory too. I saw it at its worst, at its best it would be mind blowing. So much variety in such a small area.

Does anyone know if Jetstar fares for late December/early January are likely to drop? Currently showing $989 one way from GC for December departures. Cheaper fares available for 1 Jan and then not until the 7th. Looks like we could be having new years day on a plane.

JAL can get you there and back during high season from $1375, $1150 for kids. That includes your baggage, meals and entertainment. That's from BNE via Hong Kong or Singapore.

Possible may be able to get a two for one on jet star (annual birthday sale), this sale I think from memory is April or May. They do also tend to have a good Japan deal a little later on after this but from memory last year your dates were not included (from 1st feb).

If you guys come to Japan in Feb, I recommend you apply for Tokyo Marathon. Has anyone on this forum run Tokyo Marathon?. It's a really great event/festival. It's one of 6 World Marathon Majors(New York, Boston, Chicago, London, Berlin and Tokyo). The number of participants are 36,000. 6,000 are runners from foreign countries. 300,000 Japanese apply for Tokyo Marathon, and only 10%(30,000) of them can win the lottery, but I assume runners from abroad can win the lottery a lot easier(still, not very easy though). My dad applied for Tokyo Marathon twice, and he's has won once. So, my family in Sydney came to Japan for Skiing + Tokyo Marathon. If you run Tokyo Marathon, I recommend you plan to go skiing before Tokyo Marathon, otherwise, you won't be able to enjoy skiing as much as possible after completing 42.195km because of terrible pain all over your body like my dadLOL

Looks like I will be doing last-minute week-long seek and destroy missions in Dec 14 and Feb 15 next season. Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures for the most part, but will venture anywhere for good snow.

Really looking forward to getting in, hitting snow, and getting out this time. It's the best I can do in my circumstances (no time).

yeah, i am thinking of going again (previous good check of the release mechanism on my bindings) despite having pulled my ligaments.
anyways, questions for those who have more experience.
    1) if going to nagano/niigata for late Jan (say around the 23rd) are there any deals from GC to narita and when do they usu. come out?
    2) what about flying from GC to KAI? are those prices any better than to Narita? and can one catch a connecting flight from there to a nearby airport in the Nagano/Niigata area?

    thanks lads/lasses

Usually there is some deals throughout the year, but it's a lottery. The trick is knowing when to jump in (something all on here are in the same situation).
If something turns up less than $1000, you snooze, you lose

    How you mean?
Air Asia flys cheap to Nagoya as well..
Or you can buy two tickets....cheap to KL... and KL to Haneda.
