Hmm, group of 12 were already there yesterday. Japanese guide. They moved on yesterday afternoon. They were staying where we were but we didn't speak to them. We didn't cross paths on the hill at all.
I thought these tour groups travelled in groups of six or so.

We're in Morioka now. Had a couple of nice days at Geto. Unfortunately I think I'm coming down with something.

Hmmm, interesting that you should mention that. I have come down with something, cough, sore throat, so no skiing today. Will now probably leave here for Morioka tomorrow morning rather than after skiing as planned.

That would be another group. The guy I spoke to was Australian and they were going to Semi for their last couple of days. It looks like their operating model is 6:1 client:guide ratio based on abilities but travel as a group of 12 with 2 guides. According to their website they charge $4K for the 10 day package (land content). And they are using the same hotel as me in Morioka. Seems that there are a bunch of these groups around now.

Yep, that's the one. I was going to go up to Amihari for the afternoon but may give it a miss. Will see how I feel by noon.
    Gloomy morning over here.

It is actually reasonably clear here. First time I have seen the top of the mountain. No new snow overnight.

No, not the best. Filled in the day visiting the museum, walking around the castle ruins etc. Quite warm too. Are you here for long?

Still feeling crook, so no skiing today. Have written tomorrow off also. Travelled to Morioka in the morning instead.

I knew it was Japanese Foundation day so I expected it to be busier but not to this extent. Was a queue at the ticket counter at Tazawako. I only needed seat reservation but still allowed plenty of time. Problem was the queue was not moved - looked like some couple were planning a complicated all round Japan judging by the number of tickets they ended up with at least 20 mins later. And that was the only counter. Others started going off to the 2 vending machines - I'm guessing one for tickets, one for reservations but they were Japanese only. I was getting rather peeved at this point with the train departure now 5 mins away but the other staff member did it for me.

Then the train itself was full, I sat in my seat with my bags - fortunately it was only a short trip.

I'm back on board and sorry to hear that you're not feeling well mate, what a bummer. As you know though, you cant always go full tilt on a multi-week hit in Japan, so take a few days off and see the sights and then hit it hard again, there's plenty of fresh snow about.

So, skiing is done for me this trip. Condition worsened yesterday or after Onsen avalanche.

So this morning went to the Iwate Prefecture Hospital in Morioka for around 4 hours. Quite an involved process especially when there is virtually no English. Fortunately the few staff that did speak a little English led me through. They initially thought flu as there has been a flu outbreak in Morioka, but the test was negative, so just some other virus. Said I should be better in about a week.

Figured then to be little point staying at the Onsen resort at Amihari so cancelled that and will head back to Tokyo tomorrow - 2 days early.

Thanks for the report thus far. We all have frail bodies and it's best to play close attention to them. I hope the rest of the trip goes well.

Just want to be in a reasonably fit state to fly. Don't want to have a coughing fit on-board.

Did the doctors say you where OK to fly?
Years ago we had to stay OS for an extra 2 weeks until our kids where able to fly (they came down with chicken pox days before our scheduled return).
Had to provide medical certificates, letter from doctor indicating when they could fly to the Airline / insurance etc to reschedule.

In Tokyo now doing very little. Feeling marginally better. Here at least it is a sunny +10C rather than the snowy -1C in Morioka, so I have spent a bit of time sitting on a park bench in the sun by Shinobazu pond here in Ueno. Came back to the hotel to watch the Olympic downhill but incredibly they didn't even show it - absolutely unforgivable! Had a whinge about it in the Olympic thread.

Meanwhile Andrew is continuing on my programme without me. He reported that Appi was very windy on Tuesday, so much so that they had to stop both gondolas. Rest of the mountain was no fun either. That does seem to happen a bit at Appi. But then he had a really nice powder day on Wednesday.

NHK has several channels, such as NHK G, NHK ETV, NHK BS1, NHK BS2 and NHK Premium. Every TV in Japan has at least NHK G and NHK ETV. NHK G will have live broadcasting of Women's Giant Slalom at 1:40pm.

As to Men's Down Hill, NHK will broadcast the recorded one tonight. Japan is competitive for free style ones but not alpine ones, so NHK didn't have a live broadcasting of Men's Down Hill on TV. I think Down Hill = Must, though:confused:

Got most of those channels and watched some of the Womens GS on NHK G, assuming they would then cross to the Downhill, but they didn't. BS1 was showing the qualifiers for the Boardercross.

It seems they had the live broadcasting of Men's Down Hill only on their website, not on TV.

In departure lounge at Narita. Check in, immigration all very quick and efficient.
Haneda international may be newer and maybe nicer but Narita just seems to work.
Enjoyed a nice salad here for lunch - a rarely seen thing in Japan.

Still feeling fairly ordinary but a bit better than I have been.

Back home now. Quite a relief. Managed to get through the flights without coughing too much.
Now rest up a bit and watch the Giant Slalom - at least I have the ORF coverage again now, so don't need to rely on ch 7.

The week after getting home hasn't been great. Still suffering effects of some virus, coughing, sweating and just generally not feeling well. Visited doctor - not sure if it is was all the one virus or picked up something else on flight home. A week later still have the occasional cough but only now just starting to feel a bit better. A strange week.
