Because if you wait till the last minute you can't post about it here? ;)

I don't know about Niseko but I always recommend our January guests book their kids in as early as possible.

    Certainly don't NEED to.
But to lock in the times/dates you want you may as well do it early if you know what and when. Especially in Jan when flying by the seat of your pants means taking what is left.

A couple of reasons for booking early/at all. We are there from 31 Dec which is apparently very busy. Also there was a 15% early bird booking discount. And we are going with another family and want to make sure the kids are in lessons together.

    Is that too uncool?

Yes. Try and get it done as early as possible - at least 2 months out - just to be be on the safe side. There has been times in the past when lessons get full in January.

It is never uncool to be organised for the vacation that works for YOU! Just coz someone else thinks it's uncool doesn't make it so.

Just booked Myoko week mid Feb.
Kicking around other options for another week either side.
Will get a car / van to make most of the options on given day.

    No we haven't. .
We've done a few trips to Hokkaido so decided time to go elsewhere.
Thinking of doing the first week probs at Hakuba , keeping mobile there.
Slack , side and back country just depends on the day....
Then same at Myoko for the second week.
Is it worth baseing at Myoko for two weeks and day tripping around from there.?
Any advice / options most welcome to assist the research .
    @ojisan ?

    Family?
    Friends with family?
    Boys trip?
If you have wheels and it's a boys trip, accommodation options are easy and cheap to find where ever the snow leads you in Feb.
Highly recommend Madarao/Tangram.........., amazing terrain, wonderfull fall line tree skiing, if it's snowing and your near you really must go. My personal fav.

    Cupple of mates and myself.
Have already booked in one week there.
Hakuba beckons but I'm more for the smaller chill options.

Have stayed at a couple of places in Madarao...............with family was "Annex Aburaya" (on the hill).
With son and mate was "Pension Woody Hill" which is a few minutes walk to the hill.......much cheaper but very good as well.

Lots of great little local pensions in Madarao but, tell you what, massive foreign invasion going on there. At least 6 places re-opening under new foreign owners there this season.

Not lost yet, was there last year (in Feb) and still great........may change soon with good marketing as it's now a very easy Shink ride from Tokyo with short bus transfer.
Last year the local tourism board had employees moving around the Iiyama station asking international tourists to fill out questionnaires. They can see the opportunity...hopefully they keep sending them to Nozawa.
Hit it nfip if new snow is on the ground, magic lines.

I definitely recommend Hakuba for the first week. Stay out of Happo and head towards the northern resorts. My pick if you enjoy smaller chill options (which is what I enjoy too :D)....Norikura, Iwatake, Itoigawa Seaside, Charmant Hiuchi.

Then drive to round for your second week in Myoko...hit Seki, Suginohara, Togakushi, Madarao/Tangram, Arai, Cupid Valley.

Then continue round to Yuzawa to finish off week 3. Kagura, Naeba, Hakkaisan, Maiko.

    @nfip

Yeah think we should do the Hakuba thing , go have a look .
    Tick the box fwiw.
Not 100% ski core I dont need to so much .
But broader travel sense we prolly should do it.

Maybe I should negotiate another week.
    or maybe not.

Because it's mid Feb, I would leave it open. We were thinking of doing the exact same thing last year (without booking accomm) and last minute due to forecasts changed to Shiga due to freeze levels. Was the difference between a magic week and a very average week.

    Hmm.
    Good advice.
    and concurs with my leanings...
will throw this into th emix.
wanting to book in flights tho, and ideally prefer to have it all signed , sealed then just do it.

Best save that for another trip. Too far out of the way from the other places you have listed. But there is plenty up that way to make it a trip in it's own right.

Out the back of Happo (with a guide) has some of the best terrain in Hakuba which meets nfips criteria.

Not so much urgency in Feb, especially after mid-Feb. Keep your options open.

Will bring some progress though to the resort in the way of amenities, but IMO, this will not end well for some - they will all be competing for that small foreigner market on a relatively small hill.

My girlfriends family friends area managing a lodge in Happo-One this season and she is keen to head for a week. I am a bit tentative as I've heard there is not much Japanese culture in Hakuba, especially at Happo. The skiing sounds excellent though

Well worth a visit Froff. Sure you will see more gaijin than other places but you can still get a good shabu shabu. :)
Edit: Just hope you girlfriends family friends are not managing one of the Australian package tour accommodations. I wouldn't want to stay in that environment.

Apparently a university ski club from Aus has hired out the entire lodge for next season, so all the clientele will be members or friends of members from the ski club. Hopefully they are nice people.
Is it necessary to have our own car for the week? I'd like to explore some of the other resorts in the area and the shuttle buses sound crap.

You will have a much better time with a car. We did shuttles the first time we stayed in Hakuba. The key was staying near a good shuttle stop. Up near Penke Panke (Wadano) was good. Shuttles start from up there each morning, so you get a seat and its a direct ride to Iwatake, Goryu / 47. Other resorts further away required changing shuttles at the Happo bus terminal. Car just makes everything more convenient, (not only for skiing) as supermarkets and restaurants are spread out all over the valley.

If your concern is lack of Japanese culture then get a car. Opens up hakuba and loads of the smaller resorts with less foreigners

Quite a few of these type of sites popping up now actually. Think they are wanting to cash in on the Japan tourism boom and also helping drive it further.

Yep it works, you can get apps that do it already. It uses the voice recognition that Siri or other mobiles voice command uses and then matches it with a phase in the desired language.

Well I don't know how accurate the translations are . I have quite a few Japanese FB friends , and translating some of their posts are hilarious. Same for the Google app . I try to use it if I get stuck , but not very effective . Maybe for simple Q&A's it will be ok?
