I booked my flights a few weeks back and I'm taking a punt, winging it, accomodation-wise until the last minute.

Heading over for my first Japan trip Feb 15 to Feb 24. Thinking a first weekend in Hakuba (I know, crowds and accom will be a hassle) to get my bearings before probably heading for the Myoko area. I have not discounted the possibility of heading to Hokkaido. Basically, this is a mission for Japow.

I've got questions, which I'll ask here instead of a new thread (which may happen because all the info is hard to dig through):

Can anyone recommend a good guiding company for Hakuba? I know people speak about some of the less-experienced operators in the area. Would like to avoid those, of course.

Any accomodation tips for the Hakuba area? Looking for backpacker/ryokan/guest house vibe (I'll mix it up between comfort and cheap as I travel) with a combination of access and a bit of walkable nightlife/onsen. I'm heading to Japan to snowboard, not party (much).

Landing in Haneda around 9am Friday. A bus in the arvo? A shink? Or some other way to Hakuba? I'd love to get there in the mid to late arvo to have a look around.

(And if anyone else is in the area travelling solo, I'm keen for riding buddies.)

Shink is amazing experience but you need to catch a train into Tokyo, then shink, then bus from Nagano to Hakuba. Look up times for Nagano Snow shuttle (bus service) which can take you from the airport (at least, from Narita, not sure on Haneda) directly to Hakuba bus terminal, very central unless you stay in Wadano forest area. Penke Panke lodge is in this area and popular for a range of accommodation types and walk to lifts and bus but there are lots of other options in the valley which people will advise about. Echoland area is popular with young people and boarders but bottom of valley, long walk to lifts. Others will know more. Have fun! ( I will be in Myoko area from 19th).

Yeah not many direct Bus connections at 9am from Haneda to Hakuba

Stay somewhere in Hakuba near a bus connection for your first time.
Obviously i'm biased , but like Hakuba power lodge.

I stayed at the Ougiya Ryokan, Hakuba last month for 7 nights with a mate and it was great. I recon it suits what you're looking for perfectly. The family who run it are very friendly too.

My mate does this from Haneda at 7:30am, Haneda direct to Happo Bus terminal. Single seat with full length recline. No changing trains/bus 3 times.

My 2 bob. Head straight to Myoko. Conditions seem better than Hakuba. Then decide whether to go to Hakuba after that or up to north.

Thanks for all the replies. Booked in at Ougiya Ryokan for the first few weekend nights – location seems good and the place seems nice, and I wanted to lock in my first few nights so I know I'll be settled.

I've done the shink before in Japan and I know what Tokyo train stations can be like, I don't want to be pulling my snowboard bag around, that's for sure. Maybe I'll chill in Haneda and get the afternoon bus.

Depending on vibe, I'll either spend the whole 8 days in Hakuba or get a car and jump across to Myoko/Lotte Arai. Now that I've booked my first few nights, I think Hokkaido is out, unless it's looking bone dry or pineapple in Hakuba for the whole time.

If you land at 9am, you'll miss the chaos of the Tokyo train stations.

I'm a big fan of the Monorail-Train-Shink-Bus. You're only walking short distances at the train stations, you get to enjoy a bento on the shink and it gets you to Hakuba the quickest.

Help needed. Planning my 4th trip now to Japan and dragging 4 other families along for the ride. Im looking at lodge style accomodation that would cater for approx 18+ people. Whichever area we stay needs to have English speaking ski instructors for the kids. Has someone got some insight?

People routinely underestimate the ease with which you can get about on public transport in Japan. It doesn't have to be a horrible lottery, as it is in some other countries (**cough cough** australia **cough cough**)

Well, I’m safely “home” in Hirafu.

Flying in this evening on Cathay it was just beautiful to see snow right up to the shoreline again. Never gets old.

I felt like I got a lot of sleep on the first flight Perth to HK (which was quite delayed as usual), but my Fitbit says it was not even 3 hours  so after driving straight from the airport I’m pretty shattered and tomorrow will be a very soft start.

I booked a Serena through Nissan but they “upgraded” me to a fancier car (can’t remember right now what it actually is - el grande maybe), but I don’t think it’s going to be as practical getting gear and people in as the Serena, when the others get here sadly. Nice car to drive though.

There is an abundance of snow in Hirafu, I’m delighted. So far we have had an absolute ball just me and my youngest hanging out and navigating our way here in the dark, I’m looking forward to Mum and Boy time over the next few days before our friends arrive. Relating to him as an adult and friend one on one is fabulous.

    Bring it on.

Meanwhile PB is far far away climbing mountains in Argentina.

He’s the one in the white cap and yellow boots.

    Hopefully.
    They are on ascent now.
It’s quite a weather dependent beastie.
At completion he flies from Mendoza to Santiago to Sydney to Tokyo to Sapporo, so I expect he will be one exhausted human when I I pick him up at Chitose.

    No JAL

And it was $360 with change fee.

But JAL have a $1,000 yen fare when you book with INTL flights. thats what fare class they were able to use to add our flights.

Try and find me something cheaper! (3rd to 16th KIX to CTS)

Grandpa oh and computer programmer too.
So I'm on the bus to Rydges Sydney Airport this afternoon. It seems that Tuesday night into Wednesday will be the peak of the warm spell, so much so I'm reckoning on cancelling our stay back in Tokyo early the week after this one coming to have another two or three days on snow, maybe even using Sunday to transfer to Shiga Kogen.

I did! But I think because it not much of advance purchase, it was high over $580. Feel free to check using the dates above.

But return on any airline was over $500pp. That's why I called Q - I was hoping they hadn't ticketed it. But even with the change fee it was heaps cheaper! jAL have a fare class that works out about $100 ea leg that's only available with International sections. But you can typically get it yourself if you don't get it at purchase time via the saukura (or however you spell it...) fares.

We could get a cheap flight up. It was the return leg that was $$$ and blew out the cost.

Okay so does anyone (besides Donzah) have an Osaka hotel rec?

Also depending in hotel location, does anyone think we should leave or bag at the airport?

Also peeved because the stupid agent on the phone the other night insisted it wasn't a Jetstar japan domestic leg... it is.... how do these people not know about codeshare?

She is adamant we get 30kg baggage allowance though. Which is bull! On what planet do we get 30kg flying to japan, let alone domestic. I might call on Monday and argue the point... surely they have a tapped recording...

I really really want minimal stress for this trip.
