Gees you definitely get a different impression in all the department stores and supermarkets. But unsuprisingly more a commercial exercise than genuine christmas celebrations.

What everyones thoughts on airfares? Do you think when travel is permitted the airlines will then commit to offering sales etc? atm Qantas and JAL prices from Sydney to Tokyo in January aren't that attractive. ANA a bit better.

    Could go two ways IMO:

1 - crazy cheap flights from airlines to encourage international travel again
2 - more expensive than usual - the people who have been stuck at home saving money rather than spending and now have high levels of disposable income rush to book flights, causing a shortage

Perhaps a mix of number 1, followed by 2?
I'd set up some price alerts and be ready to pull the pin as soon as you see prices in your budget

Check out Umeda in Osaka, especially the windows of Hankyu department store.
I happened to visit USJ on xmas day last year.
They had christmas tunes playing... the younger Japanese were dressed up in xmas costumes and having a jolly old time.
So, nope, they don't celebrate the religious holiday but they know know to enjoy themselves.

This is fairly typical.... Japanese people "do" festivals.
As soon as the summer finishes, the Halloween stuff comes out. Then the day after Halloween, the Christmas stuff comes out. As soon as Christmas is over (usually the end of the weekend after), the New Year stuff comes out.
Christmas tunes do play, but it's usually "Jingle Bells", "Merry Christmas", "All I want for Christmas", but very few of the religious ones.
USJ is different because it's American, and they tease it out.

Due to the international flavour of Niseko there is a lot of Christmas atmosphere around if thats and what you were after.

Also more chance of decent snow than Honshu in December, although still no guarantee.

Just to clarify Christmas in Japan, it's not a public holiday, and most people don't even notice the day.
So it's Halloween in that respect..... decorations without any cultural significance.

Thanks. I thought as much. Christmas has no religious significance to my family but my wife and kids find it a nice time of year and enjoy Christmas atmosphere. Just getting ideas should we be able to travel. I'm assuming it will be more likely that we can travel to Japan than the US for example.:D

ANA doing days flight out of sydney..? I guess the cost of parking the plane at sydney airport for 12 hours was adding up.

It all happened before the Covid.
They got a extra slot at Haneda I think.
So day flight over and back...
Or night flight over and night flight back.
The night flights are $250-300 dearer return.

I'd do the double day flight in a heartbeat.

With the uncertainty about flights etc, I was thinking that maybe we can have a Japan flights thread, since it's much more critical next season.
Thoughts, or just continue to have it in here?

Not sure where to post as both Covid and travel related but I'll put it here. Big news in Hokkaido over last two nights is about the future of the Sapporo "Yuki Matsuri". The snow and ice festival, big tourist drawcard, has gone on for many many winters. They cant get a sponsor for 2021 and are now talking about a very scaled down, back street sort of deal, just for the locals. According to this news, an estimated 200,000 Chinese visited the festival in the winter just gone. As an aside, many locals blame this event and the Chinese tourists that came to visit it in February, for the start of the virus outbreaks in Hokkaido. The vibe coming from this announcement is, of course, that the local officials don't expect foreign tourists in Hokkaido in February 2021!

Which is what the initial email we got from HTM said. However the follow up email last week was more positive, leading me to searching out flights.

    Who infected who?
Ok so China was the ground zero (we think) and lots of Chinese came to Hokkaido. But lots of Chinese came to Australia until they were restricted too - and our infections came mainly from USA, Europe, UK and Cruise Ships. There were plenty of all of these, except the cruise ships, up in Hokkaido this past season. Who knows where the cases came from. Maybe Japanese nationals who had travelled to one of these places on business brought it back in...

I do worry about future xenophobia in Japan, it would not take much for widespread distrust and disdain for one or more ethnic groups to take hold.

    That’s what I mean.
It’s pretty brutal at times now, given a “reason” it could become more than polite racism.

Question is with our Tourism Minister saying no overseas travel until at leat the new year...............?
I think that is a worst case, but with new outbreaks in china etc it is a concern @skichanger :(

Unfortunately completely out of our control. All we can do is be adaptable and ready to go when things open up. It will really peeve me if they start letting students in but won't let us out.

I’m still holding out hope I’ll be able to travel overseas next year. It was originally meant to be further afield to Europe, US or Canada but at this rate getting a Japan ski trip will be a win.

After 5 + years between our Jan 2015 and Jan 2020 trips to Japan I'm certainly hoping to get back more frequently (ideally annually) for at least 10 days and 2021 is definitely on my wish list. Will just have to wait and see what this crazy world delivers between now and then..

Depressing? Try owning businesses in which the forecast for your income is effectively zero for 18 months....

TBH we have been working on that basis since April and are in a good position to get through this OK having always maintained cash reserves etc, others not so much with a lot of pain in the forecast and we really feel for most of those guys.

The Japanese government has also been supportive to date and I would be surprised if there aren't more assistance packages later in the year. We had started building our own place but have stopped at lock up though even though we could have gone through to completion.

Its sure going to be an interesting 12 months, especially if we get mega snow and no guests ;) We are taking no deposit bookings at the moment so who knows. Would be stoked to get 20%!

    It’s horrid Pete.
    Truly.
I will be doing my level best to get to Japan. It breaks my heart thinking of all the businesses, all the dreams...

The hit to Vic Skifields (and indeed all tourism dependent businesses) now, after the fires and the shitty start to the Covid Season. I just don’t want to see that repeated for the Northern Hemi as well after having to cut the season short.

    It just sucks!

What @Lucky Pete said to the letter. On top of that, refunds for all of our summer cycling tours and chances of winter 2021 slip slipping away. Reduced our costs and good govt support so planning to get through but also Pete says, many won't. Quite a few hotels I have used on my tours for many many years have simply closed down. And most likely won't reopen. Plenty doing it tough in life in other tragic ways and we are healthy and happy but international tourism business dead in the water for some time I think.

We are in the same situation wrt the lodges. And we have a couple of other stresses in that we cannot get there to maintain them, pay bills etc. Buried lodges and cars over winter is not a good option. And I have shaken due in September and.... lots more things I need to do.

On the bright side, if the borders do open there will be lots of Aussies there in 20/21. And we are working on some of the stuff that happens in Nth America happening in Japan instead. I really do not want my mogul skier coaching over there.

We have a few bookings, either fully refundable or transferable. I feel stuck in limbo wrt marketing etc. as there are so many unknowns. Would be great to be given some milestones wrt opening up international travel and I hope that does happen soon. But I understand that dealing with the daily problems is a higher priority. We need people to just stop doing dumb shit!

Where I am the foreign tourism is recent. But there are a lot of abandoned buildings and people that have struggled for a long time. I am seriously concerned for a lot of the foreign owners in our area as they have only just started operating. Anyone relying on next snow season to survive ..... who knows what will happen.

The Furano area has been popular with domestic tourists for a very long time, most particularly since a long running TV soap opera called "From the North County" made it famous in the 80's. For the last ten years or so, foreign winter tourism has been in creasing but I don't really know the numbers. The biggest tourist season though is summer with Asian, mostly Chinese, tourists, filling the hotels. That's gone completely of course so a lot of places just hanging on.

Furano is (or was) our plan for 2021 too. We are in Melbourne in lock down again for 6 weeks (thanks to peeps doing dumb shit). Cases here are not much less than Tokyo ATM with a fraction of the population. The longer this goes on the hope of going seems more like a dream. Haven't given up yet but seems less likely as time goes on.

I wonder if the allowance for 250 business travellers per day could include you?

I also wonder if Australians will travel if they need to quarantine for 2 weeks on return. Would domestic guests in the weekends/holidays be enough to pay the bills?
