I think we should not contaminate this thread. We should write about Japan related COVID-19 in COVID-19 Japan thread:p

I've bitten the bullet and starting planning for February. 6 people and a van but where to go?
I enjoyed otaru but I think somewhere new is on the cards. I think it's most likely looking like a combo of Asahikawa and Furano or Aizu. Gotta do some more costing out but all the deals for Aizu make it an eye wateringly cheap trip..

One other thing you may have to take into account if doing a road trip.... because of the bad season last year (Late start in most places, and high snowline in many parts of Honshu), plus COVID, I'd say that many smaller ski hills will close. (some never even opened last year)
So if doing a road trip, you need to expect that some of the places you will visit may be closed.

We did a trip using Asahikawa as a base to ski Pippu, Kamui and Furano. Nice city but bloody freezing at night time! You could easily also add in back country skiing at Kurodake and Asahidake.

And if you time it right in Asahikawa there's a great snow festival.

I remember walking out of the hotel at night (back in 2012) and it was -25!

Yes, it applies to those who left prior to the entry ban and hold a valid re-entry visa. If you are a foreign national and still in Japan now it doesn't apply. Its importance for me though is not so much those it applies to, but it represents a chink in the armor of almost total bans on foreigners entering Japan. IMO that is how it will play out, one small step at a time.

Yeah I know quite a few people, I know you know some of them as well, who have visas who this would apply to.

Immigration have been good to people on holiday visa's and have been extending them. I have friends who are on their 3rd 90 day tourist visa. Permanent residents who are out of the country can jump through a few hoops and return now.

Thanks. The 90 day visa situation was what I wanted to know. Mmmm maybe I should have stayed there.

But for many it would be a nightmare bexause they need to get home for work and family.

Such a cold place. That kind of cold where you instantly feel your nose hair freeze up when you breathe in.. Had similar experience in Calgary

Well contrary to popular belief on some rare occasions there can be (brace for it !) TOO MUCH powder.

Absolutely. I will take 40cm fresh over 100cm new snow all the time. We seem to have asphyxiation deaths from people falling and 'drowning' most seasons after huge dumps. I had a mate have a VERY close call at Cortina and that incident is one of the reasons we all wear covers of some sort over our mouths.

And one of the reasons “ no friends on a powder day” is such a dumb statement.

I'll have it to myself then;). Just like the old days. Yes we had 11 degrees here at 180ASL just outside Furano 2 nights ago so was hoping for a slight dusting. Hadn't been able to clarify due to cloud cover so thanks for posting.

    Plan has switched up.
Im taking a perhaps ambitious outlook and hoping to get over in February. Foreseeing a possible scenario where a lot of the world is still blocked from Japan and Nis would be significantly more quiet. Base in Kutch, tour around as needed.

With the ban on international travel from Australia being extended until the 17 Dec 2020 it’s making a trip look less and less possible, currently flights booked for Melb to Tokyo 10 Jan 2021 but I’m going to have to transfer the dates in the next month or so, here’s looking at 2022

I'm in the same situation as you, have until 31 Oct at the moment with Qantas to make a decision. Hoping they're offering some generous re-booking options for 2022!

Same as you both. Have flights with ANA departing mid Jan21 for 5 people. If I can get my money back I would but with no phone number it is very difficult to reach them to ask current process...

Thanks, but they want to charge you a $200 cancellation fee (which is 1k for 5 of us). Id rather avoid this by waiting until we know the flight doenst go ahead and all cancellation fees get waived?

Not sure about those in Aus with tickets but we just had guests have their flights cancelled by the airline for a late Dec departure. Im not sure what happened refund wise etc with the airlines but we are fully refunding their accommodation. Good luck everyone else!

Assuming everything carrying on as it is now (no vaccine, no effective treatment, no reliable quickly processed test), is everyone working to the assumption that the borders will remain unchanged (i.e, Australian's can't leave and the Japanese won't let foreigners in).

I did the same thing Manny, if only to allow ourselves to hope and dream. Our dates are earlier than yours, but we are coming from Singapore who seem to have got everything under control. We already have a stack of business green lanes open and minimal or no at home quarantine for returning residents from some countries. It's a case of cautious fingers crossed and flexible bookings at this point.
