The HK - Japan Leg was at Christmas time. So I’m guessing that was the premium paid.

    Yes a couple...HK Express, etc.

We decided Cathay due to decent flight times and connectivity onto our flights to Europe.

We sold our house and settlement was today. Celebrating with wine...good wine. All our best holidays seem to be booked after wine. So, flying QF Brisbane to Narita 19 January 2020, returning 1 February 2020. Overnight return flight is business class. Now, where to ski?

Yeah, it's a toss up for us. One or two too many bad experiences on their international flights.
Vanilla (owned by ANA) is a possibility but they have restrictive oversize baggage rules too. They merge with Peach later in the year apparently.

I've booked my tickets. Managed to get $737 return with Singapore Airlines from Adelaide. I'd promised myself that if I saw fares under $800 I'd book them so it was too good to refuse even though I'm still paying off the credit card from my last trip.

Not exactly sure what the itinerary will be but at this stage I'm looking at 2-3 days Tokyo, most of my skiing in Shiga Kogen and maybe a few days skiing somewhere else in the general area.

So I was unsure where to post this. It was too funny not to share. But was worried starting a new thread might cause WW3!

We went for dinner tonight in Niseko.

There was one other table of Japanese/American's.

There were some interesting comments. The teenage (may have been early college or late HS) who was saying how she can't miss any more classes to skiing. She has already missed too many art classes due to ski club.

Then they started talking about other skiing holidays (it was 2 families - two adults and one child in each) And apparently they had a great time at Sun Peaks and one said "you really need to stop telling people how great it is there"

But the one comment that made me chock and poor YK had no idea why I was laughing so hard was

"sun peaks really was a better than Niseko"

    :whistle::whistle::whistle:

Actually I just remembered another pearler.

One of them was looking at the forecast and they noticed how it was going to snow all weekend. Apparently it sucked that they were leaving on Monday just as it was going to be a perfect blue bird day!

Random question. Will it be okay to get a taxi from Haneda with my ski / snowboard bag? I'm planning on forwarding my luggage to Hakuba but my flight gets in at 1am. I know the luggage forwarding counters at Haneda will still be open then but the hotel I'm staying at near Haneda do luggage forwarding and I wouldn't mind getting a good night's sleep then repacking in the morning.

How big is the bag? You will probably struggle in a standard taxi, but if you can get one of the wagon prius ones you will be ok. They fit my 190cm ski bag fine.

It's a 157cm Dakine low roller bag that I use for my skis, boots and clothes. Will have a look at the Haneda layout and if the taxi area isn't too far from where you send luggage it's probably worth a try.

Black Cat luggage freight is on the 3rd floor at Haneda, the taxi rank is very short walk away downstairs.
We did the reverse of you, sent our skis from Shiga Kogen via Black Cat to Haneda before a few days in Tokyo, then getting a taxi to the airport.
Probably 2-3 minutes from the taxi to our skis.
    Easy.

I got a taxi from Haneda to Ginza in January when my flight in from Sydney was delayed 18 hours and I arrived in near midnight instead of 6am. I was travelling by train to Aizu at 8am so I decided to get a cab to the hotel rather than wait 90 minutes for the bus. I had a Db with 178cm skis and was able to fit it in a standard Toyota Crown taxi with the front passenger seat laid down.

Standard taxi should be okay. Just need to lay down the front passenger seat. We have done it plenty of times.

    Same.
    Especially if it’s just you.
We did it with 2 people 2 suitcases in boot and board bag on laid down from seat. Was tight squeeze in backseat with backpacks but doable for 3hr drive in blizzard.

A short trip, just you. Simple.

I may have drunkenly responded to this question before....sorry. What we are looking for is:
    - ski in/ski out preferred
    - intermediate bias over off piste
    - variety
We are very familiar with Tokyo, Nagano area, Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen and getting around Japan.

Planning approx Dec 20th-Jan 20th in/out of Narita. JAL is showing $1300 return pp. Should we lock in at this price? Not yet been to Japan so no experience re prices for this time of year. Thanks!

When we were going at that time of year that is about the price we would lock in flights. I’ve heard of people getting them cheaper and I’ve got them cheaper but deeper into January usually.

I tried to book an upscale ryokan in Nozawa already for January with them directly only to be told they don’t start taking bookings until April 1st for January 2020. I have a feeling they will book up before I can even start as they mentioned other travel agencies booking them sooner, not sure what they are talking about though

Thinking of potentially changing spot now after a bit more investigation. Possibly basing at Lake Nojiri...access to Madarao/Tangram, Togakushi, Kurohime and even Myoko resorts. Will have vehicle.

Bit late to the party on this one but we stayed in Zao in Jan and stayed in the pension village. We stayed at Pension Brown, which was amazing. Fantastic hosts, excellent food, lifts to Omori everyday, onsen runs into town and then Carl showed us around the ski fields!. If you're after comfy accommodation, excellent food, great company, have a look https://www.zao-ski.com

Yep, Zao Onsen is large enough for 4 - 5 days. Zao mountains have 7 ski resorts(road between Yamagata side and Miyagi side is closed in winter, though). If you spend Zao Onsen(Yamagata side) for 4 or 5 days, I recommend you visit Zao Liza World too, not only Zao Onsen. It takes 20 - 25 mins from Zao Onsen.

Next to Zao Liza World, there is Zao Bodaira Athlete Village. It has corsscountry courses, etc too, and you can use them for free. It has many training facilities, and you can use them too(not sure if you are interested, though). Zao Bodaira Athlete Village has English website too : http://www.zao-bodaira.com/en/guide/

Another random video of Zao Liza World.

Talk to Nojiri Lake Resort. Tell Ted/Stephen I said to get in touch. They also shuttle guests if needed. Lamp is also a good option but you don't get the lake views.
