Slightly random Japan travel question. Do all Japanese hotels require a passport to stay?

There is a bit of an essay on the Shiga Kogen thread about how I did a day trip via bus to go back to Hakuba to sort my ski boots and nearly ended up having to stay the night in Nagano due to the late busts Shiga only running on Fridays.

I did get back to Shiga Kogen that night and I did have my passport on me (mostly because it had the receipt for my ski boots with me). It did get me thinking though. If I didn’t have my passport on me would I have been able to stay at a hotel in Nagano? I’m guessing they probably would have been able to call my Shiga Kogen hotel to get my details. Otherwise I would have been left to wander the streets of Nagano with my skis or try to sleep at the station

Yes, I do spend way too much time thinking about what ifs :D

All 4 hotels I have stayed at so far this trip have asked for passport, although the last couple I have just presented it up front. They always take a copy, but ask. I have no idea though what they would do if you don't have it. Maybe some other id would be ok.

Most hotels in Japan ask their guests to show their ID, regardless of foreigner or Japanese. For foreigners, passport is the most common / powerful ID, that's why they ask you to show your passport. It is only in Japan thing? I think I always show my passport whenever I stay at hotels abroad.

In any case, foreigners are required to carry passport or resident card at all times!!

I've been asked for my passport at Tokyo station once, and showed my resident card. Can be as an issue if you can't show..

Very true and I did have it on me. Just curious if they would have left me to freeze in the cold if I’d forgotten it.

Splashed out for last night and stayed at JR tower hotel in Sapporo above the station. Was awesome with beautiful spa overlooking city and mountains. In the relaxing area they had beer on tap which was great until I told my wife later and they didn’t have the equivalent in the woman’s spa. She was not happy...:D the even funnier bit is now we have checked out they told us you can get beer and wine in the woman’s spa but it’s not advertised.

Hi there again -Im still planning! So last transfers to lock in then set..
So again I land at Narita, 830am on the 25th Feb, Im going to get to Haneda Airport to fly to Asahikawa Airport (aiming for a 11.15am departure from Asahikawa) as it will save some time for a mate who is picking me up for the drive back to Furano.
Then on return I will go New Chitose back to Narita on the evening before I fly back - departing 1120am following day.

Im looking at the Airport Limousine Bus so the Question I have to those in the know please!
    - which terminal will I be landing in at Narita (flying ANA from Perth)and if I fly Air Do? what terminal will I need to be dropped off at in Haneda.
    - how long on average is it to clear customs at Narita?
    - is 830 landing to 1120 departure from Haneda possible?

This will pretty much be my final Q's haha after many, thanks to all here as I have booked all this with this sites helpful members info.
What do you think @Donzah and @Sandy ? Cheers

*EDIT* from what I could find ANA Narita is T1 - south wing and AirDo Haneda is T2. Can anyone confirm this please? Thanks

ANA is T1 and AirDo is T2. But @Zimbooo is right. Less than 3 hours for immigration, collecting bags, NRT->HND bus is too much of a risk.

Bugga, but I needed to hear it.
Thanks all, I will look for a later flight or just bail the Haneda plan altogether. Cheers

I think 3 hrs is MCT if all on the one ticket when you are protected. Doing it as separate tickets no way would chance it.
