    Cheers Greg.
I thought the article was interesting.
It’d be great to get more clarity over who is doing what where.

I got hit up to do a survey on my phone by a Japanese guy doing market research for Niseko - the questions were terrible and designed to get the answers they wanted hear, that everyone loves Niseko and maybe find out a few things about where they heard about coming to Niseko. Waste of 15 minutes on my lunch break.

What would be awesome is if everyone buying a lift pass at every resort in Japan for one season had to do a quick online survey on an ipad. Give them a coffee voucher, one time only 50% off lunch voucher.

    nationality?

    first time visitor?

    ski or snowboard?

    travelled with?

    inbounds, on piste only
    ~ skill level
~ will you take professional lessons

    inbounds on and off piste
    ~ skill level
~ will you take lessons or use a guide

backcountry either hiked or lift accessed
    ~ skill level
    ~ avalanche trained?
~ do you wear a beacon, helmet and carry avalanche gear?
~ self guided or professional guided?

    do you have insurance?
    Does it cover backcountry?

Maybe even just get nationality and where you intend to ski, then ask for email address for further questionnaire to be sent to the bc peeps.

For memory in Kiroro you need to fill out a similar survey in order to get a tag so you can access backcountry gate type zones. Not sure if that's still a requirement.

I haven’t been down there this season, but it was last year, so I expect so.

The big news is Niseko is going to have staff on gates next season ensuring everyone going out has a beacon and a helmet (no mention of a backpack with avy gear or partnered up...doh!). But it is a start in stopping the madness of people following others tracks in search of “Japow” with no clue what they are in for.

@Any has some great stories of people standing on the peak of Mt Annupuri after having taken the pizza box and hiked up asking him if he could show them the “green trail” down. :headbang:

I only know of the intention form/climbing plan. Which has a daft system around it anyway, the "mountain club" policy states that regular non-club plebs aren't able to submit their plan until after 9am, while members can submit their forms from 8:30am and make earlier lifts. Or something to that effect. Insultingly to everyone, there are staff at the desk from 8:00am onwards by the look of it. Some sort of attempt at having a bit of exclusivity I guess, but it's just a dumb policy in the end. It should not be like Disney Land where the rich or more local can buy their way to the front of the queue with club membership. Nobody seems to man the "sidecountry" gates, but they did have people manning the proper backcountry gates.

Try Hanazono for exclusivity - they’ve now got lift priority for Hanazono owners!!

Threre is CAT tour, but not sure if you can book it tomorrow in that it's a national holiday long weekend tomorrow. This was filmed around the 8th station(10th = highest peak) two weeks ago (on Feb 10th, 2020).

There are some lift accessed sidecountry tours too. The half-day one is very reasonable, only 6100 Yen or so. It's a good and reasonable way to learn Tazawako's sidecountry routes. On the second floor of Tazawako ski resort's base ski center, there is "Backcountry Desk". You can book the tours there.

    Short hike sidecountry

    This one is more hike.

Speaking of short hike sidecountry routes at Tazawako, this is one of them.

Thought this might be best in here. A solo BC tour today in the untouched peaks surrounding the town of Tomamu. Soooo much terrain, so little time.

A great result this week. A guy was buried for 3 hours here, rescued after being found with a probe and is in good health. Had apparently failed to turn on his transceiver....

Have been some VERY lucky people so far this year caught in Avalanches with no fatalities that I am aware of here in Hakuba.

Hmmm must’ve been the same one I read about where the group didn’t do the beacon check before setting off, and they said they’ll never forget that step again!
