    Hi,

we will be heading to Japan around the 18th of December. We normally start at Shiga or Akakura but found the conditions a little bare last year so looking for a new starting point. Which resort may have earlier start dates and better conditions, ideally around the same area.

Listen to Donzah. In my opinion way too early for anywhere on Honshu. I'd change your plans and go to Hokkaido if you have to go that early.........

Myoko has generally had the best early season snow (relatively) of all the local resorts areas for the last 2-3 years. If that's not what you're looking for, as others have said, head north.

Since posting the question I have confirmed our flights; Dec 19 to Jan 4. First day on the snow should be the 20th. 19th had cheaper flights. We go to Hokkaido mid Feb. We do the same most years, one trip to Honshu, one to Hokkaido. Not always for boarding though. Last year I told myself we should go to Hokkaido first. Wished I had listened.

M-G: I've been looking a little further a field; around Bandai and around Zao and nothing is any earlier than Myoko, so Myoko it is.

Crispy013: What are your feelings about Kagura? We have been to Naeba/Kagura once, didn't think it was that special. I found the runs short and a little messy. The conditions weren't particularly good, mid March, rained quite a bit so that didn't help.

If you are stuck on Honshu for that period I would consider Shiga although from Dec 20 it will be very unlucky if most places like Hakuba are not top to bottom by then.

I didn’t really rate it either when I visited. The reason for suggesting it was that it has elevation, which early on in the season, is generally your friend.

So you can't go to Hokkaido? Just trying to determine why you need to stay on Honshu.

M_G: The flight destinations were already set; one flight to Narita, one to New Chitose. The agent was just waiting for me to confirm the Narita dates. The flights were on promotion, buy one get one free but I had to book quickly so I booked and paid without dates for Narita. There were quite a few limitations on the dates though, especially with the flights to Hokkaido and having these later made them easier to book. Akakura is one of our favourite resorts and tend to go for a week every year but I hadn't confirmed the hotels so was thinking of trying somewhere else if there was a chance of better conditions.

We were in Akakura the same dates last year (same flight promotion). It was OK but not the usual blanket white we have been used to (normally we go after Christmas not before). Saw rocks for the first time (especially at Suginohara where half the mountain was closed due to poor conditions) and had a few icy days due to lack of new snow. The conditions in the second week were as expected but we had moved to Shiga by then.

But you still don't have to ski Honshu though. There is a train north, or you can get an internal flight for 10,000 yen. Not trying to discourage you from my home turf but it just seems you're a bit worried and it may be better for you up on Hokkaido.

But if you insist, I'll do a deal on a room. ;)

@M-G. Where are you and what is your hotel called?

*Lift tickets - always looking for a deal on lift tickets.

    Our plan:
Honshu - Akakura, Nozawa, and finish with a couple of days in Tokyo.
Hokkaido - Kiroro, Sapporo Kokusai, Furano

Why not do the tourist tokyo thing first?
So the resorts can get more snow?
