This is the thread for Japan trip reports, photos of trips, webcams, and info etc for the 07/08 season.
This thread is for Hakuba and the immediate surrounding area ONLY. There is a separate thread for Niseko/Hokkaido, and one for any "Other Resorts".

Less than a week till I'm in Hakuba!! I will be sure to update everyone on what happens. By the looks of the cams right now it is going to be good. Just hope I don't get a run of sunny days like the last 2 years. Although last year we got epic snow for 5 days.

I will also post vids to at snowjapan.

TJ....is that a pic from a deck at the whitehorse? My goodness!....that's insane snow just to be sitting on a narrow rail!

Anyone hear or know more about the 4 that have died in the backcountry in hakuba yesterday/today? In a tent and taken out by a avalanche. Sorry to hear the news.

Best day of the season definately today and rates up there in the top ten days of Hakuba powder days. The sky ended up clearing and the pow was bottomless. Hit three of my favourite lines today getting first tracks on all of them after 12 noon. We had over 2 meters fall over 3 days in Echoland. This is the Hakuba I knew from all the other times I had ventured here. Soooo much better than last season already. I love this place.

Another 15cm overnight and dumping now. Some of the guys have been neck deep in the stuff. Find the steepest pitch and bomb it in these conditions. I will be back out into later today.

Temps pushing 5deg at the base. Is this typical Hakuba weather? It appears this season when a huge jucy dump comes through it is followed by some warm temps? 5 deg is pretty damn warm. Oh well...lucky they had that pukage last week.

Yeti is so sick anyways that he cant enjoy anything but bedtime!

I dont know this season is wack again. good snow pack. The Bc is going off the hook. Hokkiado gets rain and we get cold as snow??? that is cool but it is a bit strange for the cold air mass to skip like that.

The reason it did that was because of the location of the low pressure complex. It was located just northwest of Hokkaido, so it was dragging warm air anticlockwise from the south. At the same time, the low was dragging cold air off the asian continent. It meant that the further south of Hokkaido, the colder the air, so even Fukuoka was getting very cold temps....

    Fatts, got any pictures??

Looks like the temps getting real warm for Friday. Freezing level almost above altitude! Hopefully it gets itself out of these consistant systems before the 19th when we arrive. Could be a good thing and start dumping again just when we arrive. Can only hope so.

It's crazy to see such different temps up in Niseko (-10...-15) at present with dumping snow.

I wouldn't worry... it will be cold again by Sunday.

Up the top, Happo is expecting 8cm of snow tonight, about 20cm Fri/Sat and maybe 20cm+ Mon

..... and while it's cold at Niseko, I wouldn't call it "dumping"...
    Maybe 10cm Wed/Fri, and then perhaps 15cm Sat/Mon

..... and Kagura & Naeba are expecting 50cm + from tonight to Monday !!!! [IMG]

Thats good news Sandy..Not sure how low the lower altitude can hold up to above freezing level temps.

Some sites were reporting different amounts yesterday for Niseko. However some were reporting 20 - 30cm and going by some of the reports on this forum that seems to be true. Anyways... this is a Hakuba thread..so I will stop.

Bring on the fresh stuff in Hakuba. 9dtg!!

Great morning on the hill today. Plenty of pow to keep me happy in the gullys and trees. Warm in the valley but still nice and dry up high.

Arrived last night 9/01/08 in Happo after a week in Niseko where we had fresh deep snow most days.

Skied today at Happo and had first tracks and like every other day in Japan, it has snowed, but you can`t compare this place to Niseko.
The snow quality in Niseko is exceptional.

However having said that, would like to ski this place after a serious dump but unfortunately time won`t allow it. Will try Hakuba 47 tomorrow, but I must say that my expectations aren`t that high. The current temps remind me of Buller when it`s good.

The views are spectactular and I`m delighted to be here. Just had a fabulous meal at a restaurant called ZEN.

The difference is, is that we skied out of bounds in Niseko, but not too far, were as my immediate assessment of this place, is that that there is an abundance of back country, if you have the right kit and back country knowledge. It`s easy to see how you could get lulled into a false sense of comfort and seek out the endless back country bowls though. Spose there are a few (avo)reminders why you don`t this season...and last.

It WAS warm in Niseko just before new year, rained one day and was similar to Aussie conditions...... While Hakuba got 120cm of powder with cold temperatures. You can't compare Niseko & Hakuba based on one day, considering that it was +3 today.
Wait until Sunday when it's -12 up the top at Happo.

"Wait until Sunday when it's -12 up the top at Happo.".....Sandy, so does that mean solid blue ice for Sunday - Monday? ;-) With thaw conditions right to the top, looks like it may be the monash freeway for a few day's until they get some fresh stuff to the bottom. Can you see any good systems coming through next week? Appears to be cold Sunday Monday but no moisture.

I agree that you can't compare the two areas based on one day. If warhol was there that last dump I think his/her view would be dramatically different. That was some insane snow.

Clearly the difference between knowing a mountain and not. I was tearing up bottomless pow in bounds for a three hour power session and I could do the same today. It is there but I suppose it can be hidden from the average punter.

Looks like some ice for Sunday/Monday for Hakuba.

In these sorts of situations, it pay to know your mountain (like TJ!!!) and it pays to know OTHER mountains/area if you are flexible.
For example, looks like rain down the bottom of Happo today, maybe 5cm snow Saturday, then sprinklings of snow (10cm) Tue/Wed. Up the top maybe 15cm Saturday, then sprinklings of snow 15cm Tue/Wed.

On the other hand, if you were heading to Kagura (Niigata Prefecture, the other side of the range from Shiga Kogen), then it looks like this:
Rain down the bottom of Kagura(although you don't really ski at 620m) today, then 20cm Sat/Sun/Mon, then 15cm Tue/Wed. Up the top maybe 30cm+ Sat/Sun/Mon, then 20cm Tue/Wed.

My suggestion for tomorrow is to head to Tsugaike. They should get about 30cm up top and the tree skiing will be good.
(No responsibility for inaccuracy in predictions - I prefer to assess each day as they come). http://www.snow-forecast.com are consistantly at least half the actual accummulation.

I'm heading off to Hakuba on Australia Day for a week of skiing, first snow trip for nearly twelve years, so I may just be a liiitle bit rusty. Probably be looking at a lesson or two, and was just wondering whether language will be much of a barrier - is English pretty widely spoken amongst the instructors and staff around the resorts? Cause my Japanese is non-existent.

I'm staying at the Villa Hakuba - anybody stayed there or have any feedback?

    Welcome Refractor. [IMG]

Your question should be asked in a new thread, as this is supposed to be trip reports and photos.
That way people can identify a specific question by its title.
