Today wasn't bad I guess... [IMG] (pics in Paedde's safari thread) Can't wait for tomorrow if/when more lifts open up all over the place. Gonna be sensational!!! [IMG]

Happo was sweet yesterday morning with no one on the hill. The Gondola was closed first up which kept a lot of people away. Fresh tracks every run for two hours from first lifts. We had one of the guys from Skier Mag calling his best turns ever. Waist deep steep trees sluffing everywhere. More snow on it's way. The next few days will be awesome.

TJ, when the wind's strong, what's the best mountain to head to??

The top of Happo is really exposed, so what's the best mountain in the area to avoid the wind?

I'm not TJ but I've been to nearly all the resorts. A strong wind will generally be a northerly, just like the classic storm system there right now. Given this is the direction of the valley its going to be tough to escape.

I would ask, which resort has the best low alt terrain?

    1) Cortina - at the head of the valley, yes, but apart from right at the top of the top lift you should be nice and sheltered. Have fun with the ski patrol though, and

    2) Iwatake - think outside the square and there are some great stashes

    3) Tsugaike / Sun Alpina - Former a bit flat low down but there are some stashes, and as we've read, Sun Alpina is a bit of a patrol hassle.

Peadde / Mark - re your day at Sun Alpina the other day and re your packs. The packs are a beacon saying "I'm gaijin, I've got gear, & I'm going to poach lines". No packs and your just another punter, you can still wear beacon for a bit of insurance. Obviously if your going high alpine then a different story, but for resorts like Sun Alpina and Cortina, you don't need packs. Mark, you may remember our experience at Cortina, 1st day - with packs - 3 runs through tree's and followed all day. 2nd day - no packs - unlimited pleasure room [IMG]

Your lucky I'm being so nice when you pr1cks are scoring....

Actually just thinking, the 47 aspect of Hakuba47 has awesome low alt terrain!!!

This morning was awesome again with about a foot of snow. Dropped a new tree gully today with bottomless pow. 5 minute walk out through nipple deep. No one around early.

So was Nozawa yesterday. More has dumped over night. I think it will be sensational.
As for the Hakuba area, I thought Iwatake was good in bad weather and after a big dump. Have to get in early though get the good lines and then get out.
All the resorts in Hakuba were good. 50Fresh has some great tips and good knowledge. You will have to stay at The Blue Dragon to get it out of him though.

Powder was great today at Happo.

It was supposed to rain, and it wasn't that cold, but the powder was dry, and plenty of it was falling and lots of tracks to be made...... enough for plenty of face shots. [IMG]

It got a bit warmer about 3pm, and the trees are dripping at the moment. Should get colder and dump again tonight. [IMG]

Raining very heavily in Nozawa at the moment. Oh well. Going home in the morning. 21 days of great snow and skiing especially in Hakuba. Nozawa was a great experience, but we will not return, due to lack of good terrain. Bit like Falls or Perisher. Leave it for the jibbers.
Don't worry about crowds in Hakuba, easy to avoid.
    Peace out. The Guru.

Hey Sandy. How did your mate with the long straight skis go in that stuff. Lucky you didn't have the little one with you. She would have been totally buried.

Well, that's actually him!!!! He borrowed a pair of my shorter slalom skis.... still skinny in the waist, but wide at each end!!!! You can just see one tip in the first shot, and it's not a skinny ski!!

My littley would have been totally buried and probably having great fun!!!! [IMG]
Might be heading back around Easter, so I'll have to catch up with you then.

Easter will be great. They keep grooming into the first week of May (Golden Week) but the base this year will mean skiing into June.
Yesterday I rode 13000 verticle metres of fresh powder on my best day ever in the snow. Japan just keeps on giving. My first run was as good as my last.

We were at Sun Alpina for half a day on our way out yesterday.... sunshine and the snow was DEEP(thigh deep) in & near the trees.

The snow just seems to keep falling!!!
Here's the car after just 6 hours in the carpark. The littley is there surveying the situation!!!

At least it made clearing the car extra easy!!! With low profile tyres and not much ground or wheel arch clearance, I had to make sure I did a little bit of clearing every day. I still had some frozen chunks in the wheel arches well past Matsumoto!!!

Oh, and when asked how long it takes to get to Echoland, I replied "about 7-8 minutes walking or about 15 minutes by car!!!!!"

Didn't get to to see you this time.... The "clash of external factors"!!! Might see you at Easter.
