HI guys, I have a wedding excuse to spend December in Japan before the 23rd December. So I am looking to travel from south to north to sight-seeing the late autumn leaves, and ski in Nagano or Hokkaido.

Shiga Kogen seems pretty high and good for the budget. Would it be okay on piste from 15-20 December ? So many onsens around the area !

I remember seeing a map somewhere on the forum that shows a small area near Osaka that has mid December Autumn. Now I can't find that thread anymore, hope anyone with experience can shed some insights for early-mid Autumn leaves viewing ?

Kagura looks like it generally opens end of November.

Yes, I did some research and found Kagura too. Though is it also mentioned that some top lifts aren’t open at Kagura until mid Jan, and Naeba seems not enough snow ?

Anyone able to shed lights ? I’d love to book Prince Naeba for the four of us if we can ski there !

So at that time of year it won’t be booked out. Wait. If the snow falls, book it.
Even in Niseko (quickest booked out Japan ski area despite the prices) you can get accomodation at relatively short notice up to Christmas. Have a contingency plan that you’ll be happy with but why not wait to book given there is no rush.

Thank you, that’s a good idea! I am also a bit mindful of price hike at last minute . A bit unsure of what Japanese pricing patterns are like

Generally speaking, the earlier snows in December are more WNW winds, and that usually means that Shiga Kogen misses out until later in December, so although high, I wouldn't contemplate going there.

I'd do as @LMB says, and wait to book closer to the time. You can find accom just about anywhere at short notice running up to a couple of days after Xmas. So for example, if it starts snow earlier in late Nov/early Dec as it did in 2017/18, you could book in central Japan.... otherwise go to Hokkaido.

Snow Yeti gets very little natural snow, and December is even worse.

That is pretty epic for early season. Can’t believe areas are not open under such condition
