Not a chance. Took four days for us to get our skis from Osaka(Kansai airport) to Furano.

Have now been sightseeing in Tokyo for a few days and have successfully navigated Shinjuku and Tokyo stations and lots of JR rail stations in between.

In hindsight, a noob error when using JR at Shinjuku is to expect to see signs for Yamanote or Chuo lines. You won’t see them which can cause confusion. All you will see are signs to subway lines (e.g. Oedo, Marunouchi) or JR.

Instead, just follow the signs to JR rail. Once you are through the JR rail gates you will then see signs to the relevant lines (Yamanote, Chuo etc).

    Happy travels.

My ANA flight from Haneda to Chitose this morning is barely 10% full. They serm to have half hour flights to Chitose. I'm wondering how they remain financially viable. Love the free wifi though!

We had a similar experience Nagoya to Chitose last year. Maybe 25 people on the flight.

Stupid question time - how to buy return Tokyo metro tickets from the machines? Am able to buy adult and child one-way tickets haven’t figured out how to get a return fare.

So far internet searches haven’t revealed anything.

Yeah that’s what I thought. Thanks for confirmation.

Didn’t bother with a Suica card as we travelled for three days in Tokyo on our JR passes which only ran out yesterday.

We have a Jetstar flight tomorrow - Chitose - Narita - Gold coast - Melbourne. Will our luggage get checked through to Melbourne? Is Chitose - Narita domestic and therefore do we have to transfer to international?

So the limited express Shinjuku-Hakuba train was a great option. We obviously had to be on the ball and up early but I'd rate it as the best option if you can make the timing work. Thanks for the recommendations. We were in the front car which gave some extra photo opps through the front as well. Car had quite a few aussies and unfortunately they were a little overzealous at sitting in the wrong seat early in the trip and then having to move when commuters entered. By the second half of the trip though, most commuters were off and the tourists could take a window seat. When we bought our tickets in the morning only aisle seats were available and I assume that was the case for most

What's the Matsumoto to Hakuba stretch like? I did Matsumoto to Tokyo last year. Spectacular views of some of the ranges on the way, and Fuji-san.

It's a cool windy route through the mountains that goes past lake Aoki. You normally have to switch trains at Omachi, unless that has changed recently?

Yeah Lake Aoki was lovely, and then winding through the trees with fresh snow was nice. I think they had slowed down for that section as we ended up a few minutes late to Hakuba. I'll put some photos up later. No change of trains for us and I thought that was the case for this option. Perhaps a change on the local trains?

Yeah - thats the attraction of the Asuza.
The local trains from Matsumoto take ages (it seems). Just meander along and rock back and forth.

It ended up being fine. Sure there was waiting times but all the flights left on time and we had to pick up luggage each time but no delays and nothing lost.

Planning a last minute trip to ski Central Honshu from Feb 5-13th, 3 people total flying into Haneda. Having the following dilemma, take the train/Shinkansen from the airport to Nagano and rent a car there(that I know will have snow tires) but is 16,000+ yen roundtrip per person or rent a car at the airport and take the drive and pay the 10,000 yen in tolls? Anyone have luck with a particular rental shop in Haneda that offers snow tires and AWD? I've driven many times in Japan and making the drive in snowy conditions doesn't bother me I just want to make sure I can get a proper vehicle at Haneda. Are snow tires coming as a standard option in Haneda or do I need to add them as an extra at the time of booking.

As per post on other thread.
No issue getting snowtyres in Tokyo itself. Eg Tokyo station.
    Haneda is harder.
It's hire car setup is odd.

Yep. Lesson learnt. Got screwed with the last night flight CTS-NRT cancelled. Had to buy JPY38,000 on the spot with JAL to HND and then schlep across to NRT by bus. Should've done the JAL explore Japan pass in the 1st place (although not many JAL CTS - NRT flights)...

    Jetstar? Never again.

Anyone been through Narita recently (ie last few weeks). If I land 5.30pm Sunday 24th night am I likely to be able to make the 7pm sky-liner from the airport? Just planning the train journey to Madarao.

Yes. Catch the 6.52pm N'ex to Omiya and then switch to the shinkansen there. Takes the same time but less hoofing it in the changeover. Quick and simple - up and over about 10 platforms only.

Just had delays on the NEX eat up our transfer time. The 9:48am Narita didn't arrive in Tokyo until 11:15am. Made it onto the 11:40 shinkansen to Echigo-yuzawa.

In years gone by and when the NEX was first introduced I seem to remember it would have priority over local lines and the Skyliner and was never delayed, I guess that has worn off.

Okay, so I've started briefly looking at car deals....I know I know, I should know better to expect anything at 6 months+ out, but stumbled across this little corker of a deal if anyone is in Japan before 26th Dec this year to pick up a car.

    https://www.nrgroup-global.com/en/50th/

Rough checks and I can pick up my trusty Wingroad for Y5,600 per day with the 40% off discount....too bad it won't let me book it just yet as my planned return date is outside the 7 month window.
