Nah I’ve only done it in person, but I’d love to lock in some seats for travel down and back and down again to Tokyo from Kutchan for RWC Semi and final weekend. However I’m planning on using JR Pass do expect I’ll have to wait until I have it to book...?
I’d love to know if it’s possible to reserve without payment.

I'd say not.... too many people might reserve and not use, restricting the number of seats.

I know. I tried doing my dates too, but it bugs out because it's over the New Year black out period. It was another Y5000 cheaper than my already good deal with Nippon. Oh well, still can't complain with what I'm on.

Booked a Fielder, 7200/day. Happy with that.

Funny though, when I was checking that site yesterday the S Class vehicles did not come up as an option - only O Class SUV. Probably an internet fail on my part.

There is! And you can also use it if you’re going to use a JR Pass, even before you actually pick up the pass, no payment needed in that case.

The explanation of the english version is here:
    https://www.jreast.co.jp/e/ticket/reservation.html
and the reservation page itself is here: https://www.eki-net.com/pc/jreast-shinkansen-reservation/English/wb/common/Menu/Menu.aspx
which has most of the main lines available for reservation. If your Japanese is good (you can combine it with google translate but you will need some japanese knowledge) the japanese version with more lines available is here:
    https://www.eki-net.com/top/index.html

When we went in Feb this year
i had all tickets reserved a month ahead, we travelled by JR Pass.

Just a general question. How do people here feel about excess waivers ('compensation package')?

That's early. Times doesn't usually have deals until October at least. Don't think they had any at all last winter.
    February won't come up yet.

Great deal! I was not able to find the way to make sure I got winter types on a 4wd compact. Does anyone know how you make sure you get that?

I was also wondering on what expressway passes should I aim for with this travel itinerary Kyoto->Shirawaka-go -> Maganoa kogen -> Tokyo -> Fujikawaguchiko -> Kyoto.

I was booking transport for 13-21st January. Either travel to Mt Fuji first then Tokyo or Shirawka-go first and then Snow. I thinking snow first but dunno. I figure do the high energy thing early and mid week rather than over the weekend even though it will be pretty quiet at Madarao Kogen from what I can see...

I found this link that indicates snow tires are offered as standard for winter.

Fukui is the closest I guess I could just shuri up there and then grab it from there just to make really sure I get the right tyres. as madarao and shirawka-go will be hectic drives

edit: looked at transport options there... frak no that's out! :)

I never pay for them in Japan since my travel insurance covers the excess.

Yep as long as you have the $$$ available to cover the excess amount until your travel insurance kicks in, you don't need to purchase the extra excess waiver covers. Can be a real saving if hiring for a week or more!

You need to check. In some travel insurance, it is an optional extra.

The last two trips we've used 1cover travel insurance but many others will also cover the vehicle excess.

Yes. We had to claim in January this year when our boy fractured his leg skiing in Furano. No problems. Contacted them while we were over there by phone and email, and then put the claim in when we got back, which was paid within a week.

Now I'm just looking for insurance for my daughter for her Falls Creek school trip. Her first time skiing in Oz (she's gonna love that ice ;) ) so I've never had to bother with that before.

At the meeting tonight the teachers said, "No out of bounds or tree skiing". She turned to me and gave me one of her looks. "There'll still be some jumps for you", I opined.

Speaking of Cheap car rental. Anyone used or know of these guys? https://www.ones-chitose.net/english

They are about 1/2 the price for an 8 seater van for 10 days ( 77000 yen) compared to everyone else. Seems a bit too good to be true.

I have made a booking but I don't want to get there and get shafted.

If I am going Kyoto -> Madoroa Kogan -> Tokyo -> Mt Fuji (fujiwakiljo side) -> Kyoto

Is the Central Expressway Pass going to cover all the places? I plan to be mobile for some of the time but spend time in Madaroa and Tokyo not using the car. So can you just get the pass for the days you are actively moving around?

Sorry It's not very clear and I don't know how I book the CEP for that (with times rental)

    Thanks!
