If I can't find any other useful resources, I may see if I can do a little bit of forecasting in the winter....

That would be great Sandy. I'm heading their in Feb as well and want to know what it will be like. Ive never been there before but I assume its pretty much a guaranteed powder fest. Is that a fair assumption?

You won't need a weather forecast - It will snow and snow and snow . That's the Hokkaido weather machine at it's best. You will be lucky to get more than 3 days without a snowfall or dump of some sort. I stayed in niseko in feb this year and got 2.3 metres of pow in 13 days !!!! Saw 4 hours of sunshine the whole time. :woohoo:

Well going by this page, Kutchan (thats the closest town to Niseko from memory I think?), victor and nofriendsinpowder are probably just about right..... if your there for any decent length of time who needs a weather forecast when the worst seasons still have about 8m of annual snow and very few years fail to reach 10m, and thats for a town at the base of the mtn!

    Kutchan snowfall stats

I'll be there in Feb so I'm hoping Niseko lives up to its reputation [IMG]

It hardly ever fails - just look at a sequencing sat map of hokkaido and you will be amazed at the cloud bands that literally start smoking like bushfire smoke about 60 miles off mainland russia . Very cold dry air hits the sea of japan and clouds packed with moisture magically stream continuously towards northern japan.
A meteorilogical freakshow and truely beautiful to watch.

Quite mild here at the moment with Kutchan expected to get to around 13 degrees today, that nearly 7 degrees above the Nov average. At this stage Tuesday is looking like we may get some snow up higher on the mountain. There is nothing in the outlook though for snow to low levels.
For current conditions throughout the season check out Niseko Now page

Hokkaido should get a bit out of the first smaller one next tues/weds, the trailing system hitting on the weekend is a full storm. Could be a season starter for Hakuba.

The global SST map is very interesting at the moment. I will post the link but it is with weatherzone so I don't know if it will work or not.
    http://www.weatherzone.com.au/charts/GlobalSSTAnomaly.jsp?domain=global

It shows that the temperature of the water in the Sea of Japan is quite above average whilst at the same time, there is a truly enormous area of water to the North of Hokkadio that is at maximum coolness. This area of water is 4.5 degrees below average!

It seems unusual to have the two extremes so close to each other (particularly the size and extent of the cold water). As I have not watched Japan in previous seasons, does anyone care to take a look and comment.

If the link does not work, it is the latest Global SST map that I am talking about.

It seems that the water temperatures are around 19 degrees in the south and 15 in the northern parts of the Sea of Japan. about 2 degrees above average. It's still only October. If I recall correctly, it will drop to around 11 degrees in the southern and 3 degrees in the northern Sea of Jpaan and in winter.

The water around all of Hokkaido is between 2-6 degrees in winter, and about 8 degrees off Niigata & Nagano Prefectures.

This explains the large pick up of moisture within 200km of the coast of central Japan in winter (where the biggest snowfalls in Japan occur)

To tell you the truth, I've looked at various 2/3/5/7/10 day forecasts from various sources for Japan, and most of the forecasts are absolute CRAP!!!!!

    e.g. for today for Tokyo:
CNN: Sat cloudy 23C, Sun rain 16C
BBC: Sat rain 16C, Sun sunny 17C (min 2C!!!!)
Japan Times: Sat partly cloudy 19C, Sun partly cloudy 16C
MyForecast: Sat Late showers cloudy 20C, Sun sunny 16C
Weather.com is saying Sat rain 17C, Sun shower clearing 16C (but its forecast more than ONE-Two days out is DREADFUL)

The ONLY one I trust is Japan Meteorological agency:
    http://www.jma.go.jp/en/week/index.html
    Sat rain(-/40%/80%/50%) 17C, Sun showers clearing(30/10/0/0%) 18C

    ACTUAL:
    Currently RAINING 17C

BTW, the season is starting to take a colder trend. The seasons are often quite stable and predictable in Japan, unlike the southern third of Australia. (e.g. 37C in October, and snow on the alps in November [IMG] )

When I got to Tokyo one month ago, is was varying between maximums of 23-27C. Lately it's been 19-23C.
There's now a bit of a chill in the mornings, and temps are heading for tops of 16-19 over the next week.
