Just put down money for the 8-day Sim Card for Japan from JR. I'm landing in Haneda for my next trip and catching unfamiliar buses and trains to places I haven't visited before. Always good to be connected to the Internet if travel plans go awry (like my last 2 Japan trips ;) ).

Must be that time...I just bought a 16 day one. My experience with them earlier this year made it a no-brainer to buy again. A great deal and worked a charm.
I recall last time they only took a couple days to arrive. Let's see how long it will take them this time.

Just had a good experience with the 16-day card.

Weirdly, my go to of Sakura has changed its plans. I’d found Sakura to have the best coverage in the hakuba valley. Will be interesting to see how the coverage of the Japan Rail sim compares in the valley.

    2 Gb a month is OK...sort of.
Having the peace of mind of unlimited data...that's better!

For what it's worth I also have a Japanese skype number. Occasionally locals want to call on a local number. For example, the last time I signed to go into the "powder zone" at Tomamu, I could not have done so without a number they could call me on. And they did indeed check, by calling the number I gave the, before giving me the OK. Having data on sim is fine but for a few extra dollars a Japanese number that can be called is good too/

Ha ! I borrowed a mates phone. For some reason the phone would ring but as soon as you tried to pick up you would get disconnected. They rang the number, saw the phone ringing and gave me the 'expert' bib. I then handed the phone back to my mate and went on my merry way :)

In my every day life in Syd I use about a GB a week. So it's typically fine for me on holiday (with Wi-Fi!)

My google drive syncs on everything.
I actually prefer it syncing on tether as it hurries the f..k up.

    You do you! LOL

This plan tripled my monthly GB, gave me international roaming (and no need for another number/whats app for voice calls) all for less than my previous monthly bill.

When we were in Europe we paid $50 for 1gb for the month. So def saves me money.

Also with Optus is you family share you can get 4gb and only use one of the phones OS.

Just don't get why anyone would pay extra for OS phone use.

y2k and I combined our 'family' and he never used his phone OS only on Wi-Fi. We only needed one day to day.

Your on holiday, three devices aren't required off Wi-Fi.

Kids today... when I went overseas when I was a kid... there was no internet. I look out the window.

When I was a kid, and we drove from Sydney to cabra, there was no by pass around mitagong and goulbourn and no dual carriage way around lake George. It took 7 hours and we had NO back seat enterainment we could barely see out the front windows in the daddo 240k...)

The bar up near 56 has always been pretty mellow . Thats the usual NZ departure spot.

Mind you. Cathay. 8.35am departure. I won't need a beer

I also vaguely remember the answer to the "are we we there yet?"

"Why don't you tell me when we next see the sign that tells us how many km are left and then do the maths on how many km an hour we are going and tell me what time we will arrive"

So my sim card was ordered less than 48 hours ago and arrived today! Before anyone gets too excited about Japanese efficiency the return address on the envelope is a Cleveland QLD address. It is from Japan Experience.....the Australian brach office it would seem. Still, it's in my hands, so one thing to tick off the list of things to do!

I looked at that optus deal and if it was just me going that would be tempting. as I am alreadyd with optus but paying $34/m for 30gb.

But taking my two boys and as Donza said they youtube and that shit will destroy the useage on the long car trips driving around. (sif they will put down the tech and look at the countryside) I can hope but we all know they won't... :D

Used it at that time - was good - but one has to remember to set up account for refilling data when starting up the sim.

Hi all, I use the Vodafone $5 per day roaming when I travel. This has always worked fine in Europe, SE Asia, Canada and the US - I am assuming Japan too? I am happy on the pricing, as it gives me access to my usual Aussie plan which includes 80+ Gb data per month. It typically connects to 4G where it can, service in the above locations is always fine.

My sometimes ski/travel buddy uses his Vodafone in japow. It works better there than it does here, he reckons. Go with that. Sadly, optus and telstra don't have such good travel pack deals.
