6th and 8th looking more solid now - back end of the passing lows should deliver some falls for central honshu IMO

Personally, I don't see how we can take seriously, forecasts that are 23-25 days out.

Plus, please explain what these charts mean.

For example at first glance, you think "WOW!!! -5 degrees in Tokyo, and -10 in central Hokkaido".

It's not the case. This is the 850mb temperature chart. The colours indicate temperature at the 850mb (850 hPa) level in degrees celsius. This is the temperature around 1.5 km above sea level. It's useful for determining areas of large temperature gradient, between warm and cold air masses.(e.g. a cold front). Sometimes you can add 10-15 degrees to give an approx temperature at sea level, but this rule of thumb often doesn't apply in winter.
So for example, if you disregard the "winter" rule, then add 10-15 degrees to the chart for sea level, you get 0 to +5 degrees for central Hokkaido, and +5 to 10 degrees in Tokyo, which is nothing to write home about!!! ;)

However, this can be useful for finding the approx max temperature at 1500m.

Worlds apart....sun feels like it burns down 28hrs a day in Western Australia, dream of that central Hokkaido winter landscape when I'm re-enacting a Victoria Bitter ad, daily.

Sorry I will explain charts next time
I have more knowledge in the long range side of things, rather than the short range side of things. I will always have an interest in long range charts, which you can easily ignore:)

So, at this stage, when is it looking like we will get some snow that sticks in the central honshu resorts?

    Today?
    Bloody mild I thought!
Good day for trying on ski gear for Japan adventures!

Checking out this thread, and snow reports and cams keeps me sane on the hot days.

Normally, it happens from around mid December. The forecast charts change every six hours, so why depend on them?

No need to worry at this stage. About 5-6 years ago, Cortina (Hakuba) had 0cm at the base, around 15th Dec, and had a 208cm base by the 22nd.... it's like a switch that flicks, not a gradual accumulation like in Australia.

Maybe the first week of January.
But that's not the only factor. movement of the Kuroshio current further south means less warm air comes in when there's a southerly.

Looks like from the 14th onwards also has good winds (lake effect), cold temps, ok highs, through till the end of the model runs.
I could post a chart but they all look good and I don't know whether to post the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th or 18th.
Plus 9, 10, 11th all look like snow down to 600m for Nozawa.:)
