15 April: 3cm at my house this morning (800m at the snowy end of the valley)
Been snowing most of today again....
I really am getting to the stage where I've had enough. I at least would like the snow around my house (about 170m) to finally melt away. Still up around 70cm on the ground around the house.
Another cold day here in Yokohama...... it hasn't gotten above 5 degrees in the daylight hours so far!!!!!
Colder here than in Hakuba & Nozawa!!!!!
I'd say it would have snowed in Gotemba & Hakone (not far from Mt Fuji) this morning.
Great day for Gravy.
Well I'll be buttered on both sides!!!!!!! It's SNOWING here in Yokohama!!!!!!
Puck me Sandy, thats insane.
That's gotta be almost setting a record for a late fall hasn't it Sandy?
After the cold, snowy and windy weather over the last couple of days it's been a beautiful spring day up this way.
Youtei from Kutchan this afternoon
Stopped now. It's gotten a little warmer. But only a little!!!!
Farmers will be frustrated...
It's been quite cold in the early morning hours in Yokohama (colder than when it snowed yesterday, at about 1.5 degrees), but it's just been raining this morning.
It's been snowing in Tokyo, with snow on the ground in some western suburbs.
It seems that yesterday was the coldest April day in 50 years, in Tokyo. I find that a little difficult to believe, as it got to 7.1 degrees, low but not that unusual. Perhaps it was the lowest overnight temperature in 50 years (1.4 degrees)
17 April: 10cm in Hakuba at 800m, got an email reporting 20cm at 1300m in central Nagano. The ropeway etc to Tateyama, a local bc mecca, opens this weekend. With incredible terrain between 2000m and 3000m, they will be skiing knee deep dry.
The farmers aren't so happy. In fact the weight of the snow broke my temporary chicken fence.
In Tokyo I heard that a cabbage costs more than double due to the cold weather in early spring and shortage of supply. In Hakuba yesterday I saw half sized broccoli for almost $4.
Ok, it seems that the ACTUAL record is it's the latest recorded spring snowfall in Tokyo (17th April) equaling 1969.
Some farmers up this way have taken to using backhoes to clear sections of their fields as mother nature appears to be taking too long for them.
Just an update too on Wakkanai snowfall for this season. The previous record set in 69/70 was 627cm and up till now this season it has received 704cm.
Kutchan has just recently cracked 11m for the season bringing us up to a bit over 90% of normal. Not too bad.
So 21st April 23.8 degrees in Tokyo.
But 22nd April 7.5 degrees at 1pm
Very strange here. Normally, you might expect a range from day to to maximums of 15-20 degrees, but we've been getting June temperatures one day, and January tmeperatures the next!!!
Still cold up north, we've barely got above 5 degrees over the last week. There's still snow on the ground around my house in Kutchan. Really hoping it starts to warm up soon!
And now it's wet, wet, wet in Yokohama!!!!
It's not actually a storm system or even thunderstorm, just some rain moving across, but there's been 21.5mm of rain in the last hour and 12mm, the hour before that!!!!
Not far away on the coast Tsujido has had 40mm in the last hour, while the place that typically gets the most rain(within 80km of Yokohama) during a typhoon, a place called Amagisan, has had 186mm since midnight, including 98mm in the last 3 hours!!!!!!
It's been a crazy April!!!!
Looks like Hokkaido might even get a mini blast of cold air this weeekend.
some might even filter down to honshu...poor old cherry blossoms will be copping it.
Now 206mm at Amagisan since midnight!!!! 118mm in the last 4 hours!!
118 mm in 4 hours is a similar rain rate to we had in the gong during the floods of 98
so i'd hate to be there.
During the summer, I've seen figures of 400-700mm fall overnight there...
Thats west coast of NZ type numbers.
Its not cool
Anyway, Amagisan has had 273mm in the last 12 hours!!!!
Been snowing this morning right to village level in Hirafu! Warmed a little now and it's mostly a sleet/rain mix. Snow near the end of April to such low levels isn't that normal though.
I just can't fathom those numbers. 27cm of rain in 2 hours??!
Fatigue from your awesome trip??
I meant to say 12 hours.
Ok, yes, 27cm in 12 hours!!!
Many places would love to get that amount of SNOW in 12 hours!!!!
In Australia they'd be happy to get that much snow in a whole week!
