Just saw this pic, posted on thredbo's FB page on 27th Jan.

Any thoughts on what they are doing, and what gridlocks are they referring to?

Where the 2 lanes merge immediately after the roundabout? Perhaps they are extending the lanes and moving the merge a bit further up... which in effect is simply shifting the problem further down the road *meh*

I havent stayed in Jindabyne for a few years, but I've not been caught in a gridlock they mention.

I hear the police are good at causing them, regardless of roundabouts.

Do you know if anyone has ever contemplated a bus service from Jindy to Thredbo, which might ease road congestion and parking issues at thredbo?

A few people have tried and failed, mainly because they charge too much and run their service at stupid times IMO

It's still a work in progress but at the moment they've extended the left hand lane up past the school to the cops' preferred booze bus setup area. I figure if they don't intend on extending the left hand lane all the way to the Alpine Way intersection then all they are doing is moving the cause of the gridlock 200m up the road.

I suppose if its two lanes, then the cops can direct one lane for booze-testing and still allow the other to flow, so it won't gridlock as much?

cops have been known to close the road and check everyone.

best way to not be caught in a traffic snarl is clear jindy by 7:15. have a relaxed breakfast while looking at the snow.

Best way is to camp at Ngarigo and have a relaxed breakfast whilst looking at the kangaroos.

Looks like they are formalising the hitchhiker pickup.

Gives the punters more time and room to merge. It could help I reckon.

The section of road between the roundabout and the Alpine Way is 3 lanes. 2 lanes for eastbound traffic and 1 for westbound. Would it really be that hard to change a few lane markings and make it 2 lanes westbound in the mornings during the snowseason and and 2 lanes eastbound in the afternoon? Surely that would cost less than half a mil to extend the problem 200m up the road?

Anything involving wages is expensive, and ongoing.

Anything not involving wages requires automation, and is more expensive.

Anyone listening to the Sydney traffic reports would also be familiar with the regular breakdowns of the tidal flows at Neutral Bay and St Peters.
The media coverage and the responses here all point to a problem with the RBT testing, and its very poor rate of results - perhaps we're all onto something?

you would think that a low number of people being busted for drink driving was a good thing, assuming the numbers tested is constant.

Reliable early start late finish bus service put on with a stop at the snow tube, then Thredbo , would make a world of difference. The seasonal workers would not be reduced to hitching. Few less cars up at the on snow car parks would be good too.

And men in blue...set up the booze bus checkpoints in logical places... Maybe where people are stopping anyway for the national park entry...

RBT setup points are always limited. Even coppers deserve some level of OH&S protection.

Even better to stay in Thredbo and have breakfast looking up at the hill you're going to ski on today. No mater how trashed you were last night the cops won't get you in the morning!!!

More lanes is definatly a good idea. The hold ups is always caused by the RBT. I understand that they need to make the road safe and what not. I think if they were to move the RBT further up the hill it would cause alot less problems.

Moving it further up the hill would require a lot more effort and that would seriously undermine the 'mountain retreat holiday park work is voluntary jindabyne police station' ethos.

Funny though...you see a lot of crashed 4WDs off the road...look like family vehicles, not young drunk drivers on a snow trip binge together. But...that is an assumption.
