    Not necessarily helpful but...

This morning it was worse from Berridale to Jindy (7:15-8:30am approx) than from Jindy to SkiTube (8:30-9:15am approx). Berridale to Jindy was very slippy - we have AWD but lost traction briefly several times, and several 2WDs and a truck (!!) had slid off the road.

From Jindy onwards RMS were insisting on chains or AWD/4WD but the road was actually much better until Penderlea where it was icy/snowy again, although not as extensive as the earlier section before Jindy.

We SkiTube, so can't help with the rest of the trip to Thredbo, but maybe that gives you a flavour. The fact that the snow was to such low levels (predicted to 700m last night) meant that the less-trafficked roads before Jindy were subject to snow and icy conditions without the volume of traffic that seems to help clear/melt the snow.

^^ Sorry, also meant to add ...

It (the road) was completely clear from Bullocks Flat back to Berridale tonight.

I'm assuming you're coming from further away (eg Canberra) not just Jindy?

If the roads have ice then a 4WD will require chains as well or winter tyres that they don't have.

I drive in winter in Europe on really frozen wind blown snowey road in a 2WD Peugeot and all I ever have needed was winter tyres.

I am surprised that NPWS don't enforce it that 4WD vehicles must carry chains

Snow will be the least of your worries tonight, YES! BUT Black Ice will be rife in the next few hours onwards I would suspect. Cooma already @1.2C since a nice balmy 4C thaw-out this arvo. I'd be super careful.

    From WZ:
    • WA: Coldest Min in 4yrs @ Perth (0.7C)
    • NSW: Brisk wind keeps Sydney to its coldest, sunny day in 9 yrs - only 14.0C (although I am not sure how that is quantified as we only maxed @11.7C on the 27JUN)
    • SA: Coldest day in 16yrs @ Coonawarra (8.5C), 13y Parawa (7C), 11y Elizabeth (10.8C) & Noarlunga (10.1C)

Great accumulations across all resort areas with between 35-50 cm everywhere, apart from wind blown ice sheets and occasional deep stashes of 80 cm +. Today was epic with strong winds creating fresh tracks all day. Visibility was poor up high but blizzard days are best for quality snow & no crowds. The next few days will be really busy with long queues & most fresh tracked out by Friday. The snow quality should stay light & dry until Saturday.

It's a weather thread, not a resort trumpet blowing thread. Quality of snow not got you by balls? Snow to Sea level? Upper atmosphere temps? Broad weather influence to the Southern-half of the continent is worth the hooha IMO.

The fetch stretched all the way from the Antarctic continent directly. This was a serious system. Any tropical or sub-tropical moisture feed and this thing would've been biblical.

IMO it's not such a "great event" though. Good quality snow, but we usually have one of these every winter.

Regardless of depths, this was an awesome system to watch from afar.
And I'd personally like to observe my high level of thanks and appreciation towards both the professional and amature weather aficianardoes on here that made the lead up, and the main event of this system so enjoyable! Cheers.

..Now to hope there is more on the way before August 8!

I some ways the two were fighting each other. One reason why the cold didn't reach up further north was because of the tropical flow going the other way. I'm not convinced that feed was that moist either.

Nah! Perhaps at some resorts but not Perisher. The quality of the snow today was exceptional - especially by Aussie standards. I agree it repaired a diminishing base, but it enhanced it well beyond where it was. We now have by far the best conditions we have had this season. Today I could easily have been at Niseko, Myoko or Yakebityama on a dry powder day.

I'm surprised at the lack of obs posted today in terms of how much additional snow has fallen throughout the day. All attention seemed to be on how much fell overnight / last 24 hours. Even the resort reports haven't updated. Guessing no one really cares and has been too busy either getting their fill or digging themselves out!

Tomorrow all lifts should be rolling, roads will be mostly clear so relax .... enjoy :)

May have have just been fortuitous timing for me.. (seldom here for the good dumps)...but today's skiing at Thredbo is the best I can remember. Everywhere you went it was dry and fluffy and I had to flick my brain into that even pressure gentle pow swings overseas mindset not the usual carving firm lower ski edge and driving technique. When you just keep going for one more in spite of rubber legs, telling yourself plenny of rest on the chair to disperse the lactic and those trees to the left of the Bluff and above Kareela will keep filling in with more windblown you know it is a day to savour. Loved finishing each Crackenback run down Sundance and Lover's Leap too... rarely so filled in and such great pitch and roll as you hug the built up left side! The stoke was strong today.

After talking to a ski patroller with many years of experience .I concur with him .yesterday was the best day I have skied in Australia ..
iv never seen the combination of snow so amazingly dry and also so much of it .it snowed all Wednesday non stop at hotham. And I can tell you that 30cm was a understatement . Skied non wind loaded areas with 50cm of fresh and wind loaded areas with well over 1m . Had runs sluffing on the steep stuff and faceshots all day !!
A day I'll never forget .Will eventually get round to putting pics up

And the cams this morning, support your claim.
Thedbo now report another half a foot in the bag so that's a metre for them (according to them).
