Hail and mixed sleet snow at Woodend. Temp down to 4.6 (dropped 3 in 2.5 hours) ASL 583.
Reports snow settling at stonleigh (west of Ballarat)
And snowing in Daylesford

am surprized Alpine Way from Khancoben to Thredbo is still coping..am not seeing any reports of trouble yet???

Very strong wind, with hail passed through 5 or 10 mins ago. Just north of Albury. All with blue skies in the distance.

Hotham saying already chains for all vehicles on Harrietville approach and 2 wheel drives on Omeo side. Will be surprised if the roads are open in the morning.
Light rain and temps now dropping in Tuggeranong.
Reasonably heavy snow in Thredbo village now. Somewhere around 2-5cm judging by what's on the ground and parked cars.
Edit: my balcony says 5.
I find they are more likely to close that road, due to rockfall than from snow, I have driven from Kancohban over alpine way when there was a decent amount of snow on the ground more than once. probably around 5cm's once and 5-10 another? Though i was very glad to see the road clearer that second time.... was in a AWD, but didn't really want to stop and fit chains.
Also I observe still dry and even patches of blue sky here in South Melbs..

In unrelated weather observations for today, Darwin is about to get it's first July rain since 2010!
Thredbo staff are being advised that chains are required for 2WD vehicles leaving the village this afternoon. Snow on the road down to the Diggings campground.
Ballarat down to 1.7 was 5.8 half an hour ago. Going to be a long night at work! Sleet/ snow on mt buninyong

Had to stop skiing early as everything below the road was closed. It's cold, blowing a lot, snowing a lot and there are convoys off the hill. This has the feel of a proper old time Hotham blizzard. The skiing got better as the day went on.
Yeh, I can see it crossing the bay from the office window, It will probably blow through pretty quick.
Bears want to know if Moondog is doing any observations or is he sitting 2inches from the pot belly stove and wondering if its all a bad dream???

Barely a drop in Torquay all day. Had one brief shower around lunchtime but nothing else at all. VERY windy though...
