Fat flakes @ Buller now
Snowing nicely at Buller but a wet mist on the goggles so hard to enjoy.
The wetness has locked in all the new snow, it ain't going anywhere. Poked my nose in a few places, still need a bit more to cover some bushes. I might go for a walk this arvo.
Maybe you should buy some decent goggles
1984. Three metres down to the roof, in front of the 1750 apartments at Hotham. Got it dug out to the front wheels on one side and it started snowing again!
I know of a 6 hour dig from o/nite carpark at Guthega last year .....
I observe some of the WA Indain Ocean moisture now feeding into the back end of this current system.
Mmmmmaybe ( read as hopecast) it mixes with the biz fetching from the Polar regions .....
So not enough to open Southside or Standard?
I observe it's back down to -0.6 at Buller... A soggy affair down at the bottom of Wombat you'd suggest.
Best chance would be to juice up tomorrows clipping front I guess?
Should not have looked at BB web cam
I observe that the medical centre is way less fun than the slopes. We were top of the leaderboard all morning too! Am making good use of the codeine, though.
I can see intermittent showers out the window. Hope everyone is playing safer out there than me!
Stay on topic
Having skied most days I'm in agreement that PB have, in general, been conservative in their initial reports. There have been a few days when initial mistakes in the App Report have been corrected. As for today there is between 10-25 cm fresh subject to where you are. Undies is spot on reporting how great BC & the Ridge were & the whole mountain has benefitted greatly from this event. I observe Interceptor & Pleasant Valley connection being prepared today & Smigs is now accessible from Piper. About 25 cm fresh at Sundeck. Eyre & Sun Valley T bars opened today. Yee Ha!!
2.8 deg at LM
Eyre is open right now. And so is Interceptor.
just went for a walk outside the office (North Sydney).... that wind has a real bite to it
Continuing rain out here in Rockbank....
Eyre is open I hear. Good skiing by all accounts especially out wide. Yarrawonga radar is out of action but it looks like we might get some continued accumulations throughout the day from the SW. Lots of windblown will se most of the resort open by the weekend.
As @Taipan said the moisture will feed the cloud mass in the high latitudes with a chance of "next time"...the only potential problem with that is the temp when next time comes around...
usually needs 1m spencers to open?
Cleared for a bit in Melbourne earlier now looks like some showers passing through again with a few squalls. Balcony furniture is doing a wind dance...
I might go and have a look at Standard shortly.
Looking at Perisher obs, it looks like that's melting snow from overnight into the gauge, as cams aren't showing snow at 2mm/half hour.
State of play ......
Have a go at the freight train headed NE towards Tassie. Looks like it may just miss the mainland.
Yeah, clipper at best. Plus vic coastal showers
It finally got cold in melbourne. And dry.
Tassie gone get it. Hard.
Lots of dark foreboding clouds over the bay right now, streaming down towards Frankston and that area...
AXS good for another 5 or so off the tail of it.
see the small darker blue dot over the NSW ranges.
that says 10 cents.
Well I know for fact that's the Gatorade bottle at Perisher mid station
Obs from Perisher today.
Easy 40 cm drifts out wide of Eyre. I posted elsewhere in the Perisher forum as I was first on the lift and kept pushing out wide as the snow got tracked out. Dropped off a ledge out wide into a random wind drift up to the waist. Poor landing meant extrication not so simple.
Took a pic of general depth using the stockometre in a section not so deep.
Snow quality was not POW and not heavy. Just had to work for your turns.
This double system is quite draw dropping. Need to move forward to the next thread.
snowing harder now on merritts cam
hey chops, any idea how much wood left at cope hut?
Everything that was there originally had chainsaw put thro it....
Hopefully there is some left and users have replaced it.....
Staying in Bombala for the night. Looking towards snowy mountains about an hour ago
I would like to make a general observation about this storm and it is this. I have NEVER seen a system with such a deep southerly fetch deliver rain or even sleet to any of our resorts. Yet anywhere below about 1400m seems to have suffered this arvo incl BB, LM and Thredbo village.
Perhaps one of our more educated weather experts might explain why. Personally, though I am LOATHE to turn a humble obs thread into a climate change discussion for fear of Claude Cat scraping his razor claws down my back, I'd say that the warmer overall atmosphere appears to be turning even classic SWerly systems into marginal systems.
Na not here ,take it elsewhere please.
Clear skies over Tumba now ,nothing else of any note to report.
Yes I read that.
I would think tho it would dry out in the colder air rather than just recirculate & possibly deliver.
Maybe a question for BBQ tho if anyone can answer.
It's not even august..the snow depth is approaching 100 cms in nsw.seems like the usual depth .......no need to throw your skis and hide under your bed seriously
There are great seasons , good seasons , not so good seasons but they are always fun seasons. In a perverse way I even managed to enjoy some of 1981. This season still has the potential for enjoyment especially if you don't mind the odd obstacle to keep your mind on the job. Personally I like it better with the extra obstacles so I am looking at this season so far with a smile. As for actual snow depth......we are doing ok , could be worse.
Stay on topic - weather obs for this system only.
It's finally dropped below 0 at LM (-0.3 deg) but it seems to have dried up. Bring on the precipitation.
Radar suggests you should still get some tonight.
Thredbo today: snow was nice in the morning, it did try to snow a little on and off. At lunchtime it was very light clear precipitation in village. At about 3pm was it reasonable snow at Merrits but was also clear precipitation lower down.
Nah. This particular system wasn't forecast to be a low level event.
All kind of peaked over Adelaide and lacked
Today was a littlesurprise though.
1 or 2c warmer than I expected.
Made all the difference.
Can't see much more out of the last trough even though it will be cold enough. Getting pushed east hard.
Starry skies in Cooma. Slight breeze from Southish.
