Other one is still locked... Snowing in PB, bit of accumulation overnight too,
How much rain damage though?
It's been snowing at PB since 3.00am according to the website. Judging by the ski.com.au cams there wasn't a significant amount of rain damage.
We'll see what happens today though. If the BOM forecast is right it won't stay cold enough to snow all day.
PB looks to have faired pretty well, it is snowing right to the carpark at Smiggins, phew
So heres hoping the temps don't rise.
no rain, just dumping! get ya head outta the books an feel it in ya bones.
Dude the b.o.m are never wrong...........
I was hoping you'd post something Fonc!
-0.5deg with 100% humidity at the top of the V8..
Yarrawonga Radar is good for NSW. It seems that the bulk of the rain/sleet is heading towards vic..?
Temps have dropped slightly at Thredbo to -0.6 and precipitation is increasing rapidly, I'd say Antons is copping some serious pukage
The Yarrawonga Radar loses itself in the Mtns,
heres another one.
Look like there is a bit of egg on peoples faces this morning. That white stuff falling at PB and Thredbo is SNOW not rain hahahahahaha
Current temps (8:00am recordings)
Falls Creek 0.1
Baw Baw 1.2
Thredbo 1.4mm (all since 5am)
Hotham 2.0mm (all since 3am)
Baw Baw 2.8mm (most since 5:30am)
Low seems centred around mildura atm. 1006 hpa and calm.
interestingly Thredbo has a feels like index of -8.1 with a temp of -0.6.
The wind is 21kts.
pressure is at 1016.6hPa which has been falling consistantly. it was 1020.4 at midnight and 1023.7 at midday yesterday
Keep us up to date Foncer.
started snowing at hotham about 6:30 are now it is falling very heavily. Is dumping at Dinner Plain too with next to no rain damage over night.......
looking at Thredbo webcams. Trees at the bottom of merit are getting snow (what is that altidude?). Also have a look to supertrail webcam, trees are covered with snow as well. I would say that it is snowing above 1500 m ?
Dunno about that. From where I sit, its always my desire for snow to fall over the ski fields. I don't see it as a competition but a chance to learn more and to see...snow!
Yep snowing above 1500m!!!! Bottom of Merritts is 1660m ASL and snowing also the supertrail webcam has snow ALL over the trees quite nicely, thats 1420m ASL! GO THREDBO!
OK, it's seems like there is SOME snow falling rather than ALL rain.... It may or may not continue and it is likely to turn to rain as the day gets warmer...... but one question is, WHY is it SLIGHTY colder than expected??
Let's look at the satellite.
Here's mid yesterday:
I've marked the warm winds coming down from QLD. The blue dot near Adelaide was the centre of low(around which the system was spinning).
To the southwest is the weakening cold front, but you can see the cooler air is taken both down to the SW, but with an injection of that air up to the north and into the low pressure system which was SLIGHTLY further south and nearer the coast than expected. (see the discussion in the "predictions & discussion" thread) This partially explains the low surface level temperatures in southen SA including Adelaide.
The next one shows the situation around 7:30 this morning. Again the centre of low is shown by the blue dot near the SA/VIC border. I've also show the NSW/VIC resorts with small blue dots. Much of the warmer QLD air is pushing more into the Tasman, while the cooler air from yesterday is pushing through SA and into southern NSW and northern VIC. As the centre of low moves to the SE, I'd expect the temps to gradually drop.
hmm, i think the bom have got this one wrong, it is snowing at the base of mt p, and looks like 5cm has allready fallen
hope the temps dont rise....
Well Blackheath my rather simplistic views of 10c in Adelaide and Rain = SNOW has done exactly that it has snowed!!!
You can look at all the charts in the world but sometimes you dont need too.
Temps are not going to rise. They should fall this system has a southerly feed.
yea, and the preasure has fallen at a steady rate at thredbo
Charlotte Pass is at +0.6. Hopefully ur right BH and it does fall. Cause it looks like the heavier rain/snow is gonna come round lunch.
From now on BH i'm going to ingore all the boffins theorys that have caused me so much grief over the last day or 2.
I'll just check the Adelaide temps.
Looping around from the north east feed aswell though. We all hope temps wont rise. We all hope it will continue to snow. The whole things borderline.
RTA report for NSW roads
Kosciuszko National Park & Snowy Mountains Highway -
Adverse Weather Conditions - Snow, Icy Roads
Kosciuszko Road - slush on the road from Dainers Gap to Perisher.
Guthega Road - open to Guthega village.
Alpine Way - open to Thredbo. Slush on the road from Threbdo to Dead Horse Gap. Chains may be required from Dead Horse Gap to Pilot Lookout.
Can someone confirm Dainers Gap location - Is it the hill between Ski Rider and Sponars Chalet? If it is this is surely below 1600m ASL.
SNOWING BIG-TIME AT PERISHER!
Serious puckage!!! Yeah yeah.
No its the hill on the Perisher side of Sponars where the chain bay is.
Hill between Skirider and Sponars is Rennix
But Dead horse gap is 1580m and if there is snow on the road then snow level must be closer to the 1500 mark, albeit; Dead horse seams to have some local conditions that causes it to snow when its raining higher up.
Where do u think the low is situated at the moment?
Precisely 30 kilometres south of Mildura.
Seriously, the lowest baro is at Mildura and Swan Hill on 1006 with Hopetoun falling so it'd be tracking roughly along the line of the Murray.
Sure is defying predictions of speed (lack of) though.
As it is snowing to resonable levels.
For NSW the slow movement can only be good news.
The middle level low is NW of Mildura atm
Well yes the slowness is good.
The prog was for it to migrate eastwards and pick up the crud coming down from QLD.
I think the lack of speed will allow it to feed more of the cold air from the south into the system rather than the warmer northerly stuff.
I'ts still wait and see, but I guess the fact snow is generating is something.
There go some exactness from the experts.
According to PB website, the bottom of Smigs (1685m) is currently 0.6 degrees. Hope these temps stay down.
Temps are warming up:
Baw Baw 1.3C
Still we haven't seen too much of this anywhere,
lets hope its stays that way.
Very very slowly though....
Oh no ...... is raining now very heavily at Hotham !! I look out my office window and it is bad !
If you love skiing slop.
It's raining everywhere now - even the hightest Cam in the country (Basin @ almost 2000m) is showing water droplets on the lens. We just have to grit our teeth and accept the loses until the evening temps and/or the southerly flow kicks in
Hmmm only if somebody twisted my arm to near breaking point would I call whats falling as snow at Perisher valley
Very, very moist let put it that way, whether you describe it as wet snow or sleet or r*** it's not as bad as what was predicted so keep those fingers crossed to keep cool and we'll see what happens
ANy updates from Hotham Chuck?
With the temps being at +1 degree, i would say its r**n, 6mm since it went into positives
Why is only Hotham showing any precipitation on the BOM AWS? - Both Falls and Buller have shown 0.0mm since 9am - Thats not right! I can see the water droplets on the Village Square and Falls carpark Cams
Wind has gone to the west in mildura, looks like the low is tracking a bit more southerley again, than east. Temps half a degree lower with the passing of the centre of the low.
Yes, well so much for that brilliant theory
As much as we all didn't want it to be true the more downbeat predictions made here have turned out to be spot on. Hard to imagine that such low ground temps could result in the temps we are seeing on the mountains - but as everyone kept saying; "weird system" - So the chooks have come home to roost and it's absolutely ******* down non-snow everywhere.
