Static Vic radar below, see the <a href='http://www.theweatherchaser.com/weather/observations/radar/Animation_Vic'>2 hr animated version</a>. This will update. [IMG]

It's not very often you see it coming in from the SE like that.

    Yes Djon... unfortunate.

    Question [tad off-topic]
    1. Do smaller rain droplets make better snow?

Yeah, not as much r*infall in the alps perhaps, but that was there was no snow to wash away being out of season, and there was a very decent (10-20cm?) snow accumulation after it passed. If we get a similar fall this time round I would be happy!

Here are some snow cams from Feb 2005, more <a href='http://snow.barratt.com.au/z/snowcams/200502'>here</a>.

At least it is southerly and it is getting cooler. We have had some OK falls from the SE but generally NSW fairs best. Probably be OK above 1700.

Is that a trick question!? [IMG]

Or do you mean what sort or r*in droplets is less bad for snow cover?

Southerly would be good if it was air that originated from the south (which it normally does)...

The air/r*in coming up now has been 'around the country' if you like. We still need a good southerly feed to come in for things to get really cold, which isn't looking like happening for until perhaps Tuesday.

Looks like it will be a bit cooler at times until then though which may be enough for some wet snow about the higher resorts... <img src='http://pages.prodigy.net/indianahawkeye/newpage09/3.gif'>

Don't quite understand your question as it's an Oxymoron (can't be snow if it's a 'rain droplet').
But if your refering to the size of snowflakes. A large spanned snowflake, generally means it's much more mature than a smaller 'grapule' frozen state precip. As it indicates that the flake has been super-cooled and picked up size through picking up atmospheric moisture/frozen particles.

Therefore a big snowflake would be more beneficial than smaller, for snowdepth.

As a straightforward weather observation, it's been +3C and steady pouring rain at DP since 4pm [IMG]

Vis about 2-300 metres max, wind light ESE.

Yeh, Djon this one has been around the world and agree we need a more southerly feed to get it really cold. It may however pick up some of the colder air from the low that hit NZ (hopefully). At least it is not northerly!! Anything is better than nothing at the moment and we are just living on hope.

Its above 0 so it's rain basically, maybe ice pellets/odd snowflake. Also that temp is at the top part of the mountain, so down lower it will be warmer/definate rain

The road, near the busstop, and car park is more interesting IMO. It is still very shiny (ie. wet), you can see reflections in it for different things. When you can't see reflections we would have something of interest... [IMG]

9:30pm AWS update not too far away will be interesting. We really need less than say -0.5 tonight on the summit for snow accumulation further down on the bulk of the runs.

Yeh the cam has too many people looking at it now, Thanks POW!!! but from what I saw it doesn't just look like rain! [IMG]

Yes at least -0.5 would be nice, not sure that we'll get it!

Also the East Sale radar is now down until 10:45pm for windfinding [IMG]

Not to sure of the apartment Fletch has it mounted on, but it's the same bulding as Swindlers and the Grocery Store i believe. Which would be about 50m above the AWS.

Hotham down a little more at 9:30pm to 0.3c (<a href='http://www.theweatherchaser.com/maps/index.html?lat=-36.67723060234621&lon=147.3870849609375&zoom=9&lid=173'>see here</a>). Baw Baw is still warm at 3.8 and seems to be in the relative thick of it, though further west....

Certainly doesn't look like it will get really cold tonight, but <img src='http://pages.prodigy.net/indianahawkeye/newpage09/3.gif'> it gets just a little cooler (one degree would be nice). It has cooled off more already than I thought it would... [IMG]

Actually... I may be wrong. I might be thinking about one of the resort snow depth measuring sicks. Anyone?!

The BoM Mt.Hotham AWS is on top of the summit (1849m ASL). The fletch cam is at around 1770m, right in the village. Same building as the supermarket, ticket place etc.

The lift company will have a number of mini-weather stations dotted around the place to help them with snowmaking.
