Not sure to what level, I think the point they are trying to make is there was pretty much zero for those two days. Anyway, today has made up for it and it sounds like there is a bit to go yet. It doesn't feel very cold though which i my concern.
Is it correct that the BOM radar doesn't always pick up the moisture as it's hitting the mountains? Thought I remember reading that somewhere.
Yep that's correct and also the orographic lift isn't taken into account too. Best radar is Yarrawonga to see the incoming bands IMO
Doppler radar is hardly the best indicator for it's ability to snow in the mountains. The radar will generally only indicate inbound moisture and direction. I would stop watching the kettle boil and check back in a few hours. As @SAsurfa pointed out it should snow all day at varying levels of intensity.
Combine radar watching with satellite picture to see what cloud mass is generating the radar signals. Then just watch the sat pic over the mountains to work out what is happening. E.g. if the heavy precipitation on the radar is associated with a big white blob of cloud on the satellite picture then you know the big blob of cloud is producing the goods. If it heads your way it's going to drop it's guts all over your slope.
Further example. At present see how once the big cloud band passes the radar only shows small showers. Corresponding satellite image shows speckled cloud much lighter in colour. This is the colder drier air mass. It will produce continuous snow showers but not the rates of accumulation you've seen this morning. Still good for 5-10cm/day and plenty of drifting snow. Next good dump potential comes from the dense cloud currently around Perth. Pretty sure this is what the models say will produce decent snow on Friday.
I observe that Selwyn cams (especially Selwyn Centre cam, look a little whiter than an hour ago. Light snow obviously falling there. You can also see flakes in the image. If they are getting snow, the others therefore (being higher) should have snow not rain
Instacreep telling me Bawbs even getting some wintery mix. *they called it snow but I'm fairly confident that's bullshit...
Selwyn Centre Cam now shows a total white coverage there at 2.50pm - clearly several cm's of snow has settled in the last hour. Hopefully it will continue there and the other resorts overnight. Plenty of speckled cloud to come through overnight. Very obvious on the sat pic streaming through Bass St on a line to the ski fields of Vic & NSW
I observe car park , got your chains.. Brad was correct for Wednesday as was all others for Wednesday
Sorry Ralphy. Many predicted wet Monday lingering into Tuesday, from quite a ways out. And just a few posts before.
Pretty good, needs a bit more but the flat parts of the main runs (as in the piste sections) look almost compleltey covered. I have no clue how much more they need to start the lifts??
I am trying to relax by observing the beer being opened and the schnapps being poured, but give me a sec and I will get my daughter on the job with some pics
I think it's Perisher Carpark. But Cuddles posted the photo. i just embeded it. I'm hoping he'll update.
I observe that my first cousin once removed (yes, really) has posted a pic of herself on fb, at Perisher with big snowflakes
I'm guessing Perisher too, but for now we guess. Looking like a good 25 cents going by the level on the bumper bars. Might be a pinch less. But that's not bad for daytime accumulation in Aus.
Smiggins pics, done by daughter so not the best, but shows the accumulation on the hill. Yesterday the entire mountain was grass with barely zero sign of snow bar the very end J bar where there is snowmaking.
Similar thoughts re vehicles. From Sat pic it appears the colder air is right on the doorstep - cloud type changes obviously near the NSW Vic border at the moment.
Lacation, that's good ., Perisher earlier, kids racing in blizzard , they got this one correct .. sorry at work , got called away , great video on Facebook mid station Perisher , try and get link
I observe from my high perch near Tumbarumba .....................and with an observation phoned to me from a friend at Walbundrie ( 50km northwest of Albury) .............well we observe a band of the darkest ( I am talking midnight blue to black type of dark) lowest clouds I have seen in a while. Either we going to get some , a goodly some I might add of snow in the very near future or we are going to get flooded out to Noah proportions. So this band is a minimum 150 - 200 km deep ( Canberra people might be able to help establishing width ) by the look of it , every inch of it is seriously dark and low. If the temps come to help us out it could go very nicely tonight.
Well 1700 and above it rained and the cold pool never came Monday. Not sure what your point is mate?? That you were somehow less wrong than others??
A few catching on, good to see lol This one is now 7 hours old . All white on the cams , it certainly pays to be higher up the hill
Here is the Perisher car park at 11:30 today. Add the ensuing snow since then. I'm guessing about 5 to 10 cents or thereabouts.
