Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Its either raining torrentially or its dumping on the 0545 camshot of FC carpark. Probly the wrong thread for this ob so shoot me.

Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) If the NSW resorts are getting snow down to reasonable levels and this band is moving south its a matter of time. The rain band must be bringing some cold air too.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Thanks Blackheath - I couldn't find the page either. It doesn't look great for eastern Australia at the moment does it?
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) I think the snow level may drop to around 1000m mark tonight. It really has a similar feel to last years big dump- cold day, rainy afternoon and just a slight breeze only difference is the weather is coming from the east not the west. We have had a temp drop of about .5 since 4pm currently 4.5c (feels a lot colder though) I wont be surprised if I wake up tommorrow and its white. Here's hoping.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Looks like a melted snowshower, the only dump I've seen today was in the toilet.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) FC cam looks like a mixture of wet snow and rain. We will see how the night goes. Ive put no forecast in for snow in the comp because conditions are so marginal that the tend to lean towards no snow. The sound of rain down the down pipe will be a sad sound tonight. I wonder how many babies will be born in April next year with skiing mums and dads. (Hey got to look on the bright side.)
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) just out of interest - when the BOM talks about the east in their reports - what does that encompass?
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) I wondered that, its a bit ambiguous. I want to know what snow or r**n mainly in the east means too.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) how much so far harry. trying to work out if its worth jumping in the car or not. Cheers.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Eastern side of the range. The weather we are experiencing now is coming from the east so most precitpitation will fall on the east side of the range and the west side will remain relatively fine and precipitation free. The opposite is the norm for our snow bearing systems - this year being the big exception.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) so what fields - if any are in the eastern part of the range - sorry my knowledge of that area's geogrpahy is limited
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) See... now I have heard that Selwyn is one of the Eastern slopes... you know... last to get it first to lose it????
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Selwyn is also at a lower altitude so they get a lot more rain. Hence the shorter season. Selwyn does do well out of ECL's usually
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Latest synoptic and sat pics paint a pretty good picture! (I'm no fan whatsoever of the models...give me real observations) Lots of moisture and plenty of cold air, with the initial front being quickly followed by another. The good news is that the 1st front is moving pretty well E but the second front (with all the major cold air) is tracking a lovely NE and if, IF it stays on course up into the Bight, I think we are in for a lovely surprise in about 2-3 days time. My observations from the past few years indicate a good scenario from this!!!! Just an added bonus from today too Here's hoping
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Good morning. Lovely picture from Thredbo. Resort is still white and it looks like quiet a good fall on the top. At the moment it is cold rain in the village but the wet snow is still on my balcony, around 3-4cm. Cloud cover around 1800 m and no wind at the moment in the village. I'll head up to Anton this morning and keep you update late arvo. Ciao
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) BH is right, plus Selwyn is also a fair way north of the others, hence "last to get it". check out the nice map on the right hand side of this page: http://www.ski.com.au/resorts/
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Looks like it is just ripping down in NSW by the looks of the cams
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Well 15cm for Thredbo this morning. Thats a start, and im sure should make a few people happy.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) We need days of snow now. A few snow showers aren't going to do anything.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) It has been raining in Jindy all morning, but it has become much heavier in the last 30 minutes. Thredbo AWS is just below zero....
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Yeah looks like snow now, and there's snow on the Smigs buses Thanks for pointing that out muffin
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Big band of precip heading in on radar towards PB and Thredbo, quiet heavy rain. Temps look ok for Snow above 1700m ASL.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) D'oh looks like rain below 1900 m at best. Marginal conditions. Lots of snowmelt at lower elevations already (like Selwyn)
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) raining at hotham lookin at the cam, spewin. hopefully it'll get down to freezing overnight so it starts to fall as snow, fingers crossed.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Current temps at 850hpa. The pointy darker blue bit below Adelaide is the cold fronts fetch.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) heres lookin to the next system for vic, they have been smashed again. thredbo and PB have done very well. looks like another 5-10cm during the day. put the extra fuel in guys and drive up to nsw, should be good this wk end.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) tell me why, if the tmps at 850 are as above, NSW is doing so well out of these fronts and VIC is getting smashed? At what height is the 850 tmp? ie. 1700m 1800m etc?
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) afternoon gfs run still shows heaps of action through the bight but little to none making it inland....
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Temperature has just hit freezing at Falls and it is snowing. See cam and cars with snow on them.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Awsome day at PB- Wet snow to kick off with at Front valley headed up to blue cow nice big fat dry stuff up top, a bit of wetter snow down low the very bottom of excelerator was basically rain/sleet but the snow seemed to be holding up ok. Guthega is white again and surprisingly had some nice powder. Visibility was pretty average though but cant complain it was snowing hard. At 10.45am stopped for a hot chocolate for approx 15mins and there would have been 5cm of fresh snow sitting on my skis in that time. Hopefully more snow to come and the rest of PB may be able to open. Mount P will be close to opening now.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) hopefully stays cold, fair bit of moisture on the radar over vic alps now. looks like snow on the basin cam at hotham
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) We've hit the minus' at Falls a little earlier than yesterday so here's hopin.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Falls is fine, Hotham is fine...there is ONE resort in Australia that needs the snow and thats Buller! Very depressing site on the snowcams
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) Buller is really in trouble this season. i'd be surprised if they get any more than what they have now up and runnin. its a shame cause when well covered, apart from alot of the people and the overcrowded runs and the appalling white outs and freezing cold winds, its a great place to ski with some really great terrain.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) you must really love the place, whoever decided to put a ski resort out on that exposed lonely hill without any other mtns about to help it out must have been mad! I've skied there in big years like 91 and 96 and it was struggling for decent cover, barely got to a metre. ******************************************* Moderator's note: This is off topic
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) blah blah blah Bullers sh***.Same old comments same old garbage.Vic resorts are all crap at the moment with NSW having the only decent snow.Hey Longingfor**** you obviously didnt happen to go in epic seasons like 2000-2004 did you? *************************************************** Moderator's note: This sort of stuff generally gets deleted.
Re: July 24th-29th (Predictions & Discussion) longinforearly's - Someone wouldn't put a resort there in the first place is the snow was bad. Its called Climate change. ******************
