    I doubt a bit of surface rain is going to turn the snowpack into a metre+ of rock solid ice. A crusty layer covered in 15cm of light snow is what would be likely..

    My old trusty Austrian friends tell me that this is very important for the base when temps warm up. Rain creates a cake layer effect and stops rapid melting of the snow which contains a lot of air. Important in Spring. These friends skied the Alps from a very young age and I trust their knowledge. The 1968 winter had lots of heavy snow events with periods of even heavy rain and the snow pack stayed until summer. It was even under the 1969 thaw!!!! As long as the rain is not associated with very warm temps then it is ok

    Macca beat me to it. Bit of melt, before a freeze, then snow, solidifies the base.
