Just arrived Thredbo - bits of drizzle all the way from Canberra on way down from Sydney.
Feels about 0 degrees in the village - hope for a good weekend regardless of the past few days rain. I'll report from the mountain later today

@bondibob how's the damage to the lower part of the mountain after this week's rain?

Very very mild in Melbourne CBD today. In the sun with little wind a t shirt is sufficient

Heading up tomorrow, would love to know some observation about conditions up on Thredbo! Cameras show the snow turning a nice shade of brown!

    Raining at Guthega.

Natural snowpack is sludge to the ground. Awful.

Almost as if there's a weak trough stuck on the west side of the divide.
Not showing on the synoptic though.

Pardon my ignorance, but do upper level troughs show up on these charts? Maybe it is upper level.

After three days rain the cover has suffered considerably. Today was the worse I've seen it and grass and scrub have appeared across the entire mountain top to bottom. Snow making areas have held up better than natural cover but even snow making areas have bare patches emerging. We desperately need cold nights for snow making and a good 20-40 cm cm top up to replace what appears to have been lost. If the next system delivers lots of prefrontal Perisher will be back to snow making areas only. Time for a collective snow dance!!

We were there for inter schools Wed / Thurs pretty ordinary conditions (and choices made by race dept), kids were skiing on a combination of snow / mud / rocks. I fully appreciate that there had been rain, and a lot of damage below the mid stations (as there always is) but there were certainly opportunities for snow farming, and running the events at different locations around the mountain.

The snow over most of the open skiable area is thin, and very gluey saw quite a number of injuries that could be attributed to this.

That said its nothing that a few cold nights and some precip or snowmaking won't fix.

P.S. Interschools committee put on a great event, even if at times they were brave faces communicating with us. :)

This is really evident at Perisher, the snow making areas are still very skiable, clearly whatever Perisher made before the start of the season has made a big difference as compared to Thredbo. Even the usually reliable Merrits is pretty ordinary at the moment. Still early in the season though....

I can only assume they do. Although the aviation industry relies on NOTAMs I would hazard a guess it needs to be plotted on the synoptic charts too.

Not looking good for snow making at Thredbo at the moment. Steady light rain in the village and mist extending up the mountain. Apparently it is now 0c at the top though.

Temps at top Thredbo now -0.3C and trending down, so more than likely snow there and at Perisher.

Hopefully stays that way all night

The temps at the Thredbo station are taken at 1900m so its indicative of the whole of Perisher that we ski. Its also placed well across the hill from Thredbo toward Perisher. The gauge freezes nd does not measure snow. Perisher however does have a heated gauge and measures snowfall and it is snowing as per south perisher cam

It always bugs me this!!! Why do Perisher prominently display both Village and Top temps on their front page, and you have to wade though a mountain of marketing to find anything like this about Thredbo. (not even sure you can)

All very 2013 so far. Tease of good snow then rain and warm wet days.

Damage is everywhere at Perisher - and next snow will be a repair job rather than invitation to smash down NthP.

This next snow will be covering a lot of obstacles. Base is now completely soft - and filled with sink holes. A deep freeze and a new layer on top will work - but I'll believe it when I see it.

Real shame as it was looking like a sweet quite holiday week on Monday.

Next Wednesday onwards is probably the go. Depends what happens between now and Tuesday as to whether there's anything worth venturing out into on Tuesday.

Interschools at Perisher will be challenging on Wednesday - Maybe by Thursday Season 2016 will return to being a bit more fun.

This interschools thingy didn't exist in my school days, thank GOD! We just used to have the whole of Thredbo to ourselves along with the grand Europeans that made the resort.

Who on earth concocted this diabolical nightmare? Skiing as a school sport should be BANNED! :p

Started raining pretty heavily at Falls about 30 min ago. Last thing that is needed as the cover has copped a real pounding this week.

Rain just got a bit heavier here in jindabyne and currently 5c. Temps look ok above 1600m.
Hope we can squeeze another 5cm overnight to make it look pretty in the morning.

It's been pissing down in Perth all night. I observe myself predicting that you're going to get a lot of precipitation out of this; just a question of what state it's in. Temperature dropped pretty fast when the front came through, so there's hope.

Sorry rocketboy , I cant share your pessimism or disapointment. Important questions - Is there snow ? Can you ski/board on it ? If the answer to these quesions is yes then.........its always fun :D:D:D.
Maybe there is some rain damage to the snow cover , so what. Maybe it isnt as perfect as you would like , so what. Every day wasnt a bluebird day for you , so what and to be honest I prefer a variety of conditions just to keep it real. Remember a day on the snow in any conditions is still more fun and better than what you would be doing if you werent there.
As for Interschools and the like , I can tolerate the extra traffic , doesnt really bother me a lot. What I dont like is the sheer level of entitlement some of these people , mostly parents, bring with them. Its almost , no, to be honest it is the attitude that everything revolves around their little vegemite and everything is there for their use and the rest of us regular snowgoers need to get out of their way.

I have come to enjoy shit snow, more and more. For one weird reason. It's one of the only things left in Australian life that we can't control and it please's me no end watching people (Gen Y's do it really well) getting stroppy and high strung with the Australian snow conditions. Hanging off every model run, declaring the season over in May ect.... Chill, relax and just enjoy the mountains. :)
