Here most of the season so personally don't care about one day to the next. Sucks though for families who still ski Australia and fork out 6-10k for a week in the snow to have it rain all week. A bit of empathy for those who get a crap week. Sure it's the luck of the draw but it still sucks. And my point was - no one should expect to be smashing down NthP next week. Eyre is currently a series of half connected mud tracks. So yer KB enjoy your week coming up you should nicely dodge the rain and score a near perfect week of reasonable cover and mostly good weather.
I was at Perisher Sunday to Thursday last week. Slopes were relatively empty, had 2 really good days and 2 not so good, can not imagine anything I would rather be doing. When skiing in Australia expectations are not as high regarding snow depth and quality as if O/S IMO. Its hard to beat the views of the main range as you ski down through the snow laden gum trees at Guthega. My accommodation was cheap, camping at Jindy, and with season pass not spending much at all. I am a pom and a skiing holiday in Australia IS EXOTIC. Not many holidays for Family of 4 under 5k out there either, particularly with most food and activites provided for the duration of your stay.
Not to mention upwards of 2000m would've revived over a foot of snow in the last 4-5 days. Views of the range would've been bangin'!
I usually have 4 extended trips plus a few short ones each season which averages out over the years at about 45 days on snow. My lifestyle allows this to happen after much hard work and preplanning so I guess I am lucky in that respect. Over the winter I will encounter all manner of conditions which I always enjoy immensely. Next week I might get good conditions but it isnt always the case and probably wont be true for the whole season. I always enjoy whatever conditions I encounter , no exceptions. As for those who have the restrictions of only being able to go during school holidays , as you say luck of the draw for them. There was a time when school holidays were in August/September so maybe I got the luck then as well. Do I feel for them ? Not a lot really , thats life , make of it what you will and be happy that you can because there is plenty that can't.
The 10 am Bom MSLP chart now has a 5 eyed monster with a cold front kissing latitude 20 south. But is it peaking too early and too far west?..... W
Do you know what I had a great day at Thredbo yesterday, when conditions are bad and vis is low the top of the mountain is empty - love it. Tho was a few hairy moments. Busier today. Big time kids everywhere having fun. I finished a little off piste near the top and fresh snow is reported - maybe 5cm overnight above 1700. Damage down below but it's ok just gotta dodge a few rough patches and bump over the skiers tracks. Just having lunch and a beer at cruiser! Perfect.
Reminds me of Spring boarding maybe 2nd week of sept. Deffo needs a dump on Tuesday Wednesday and we hopeful of no more rain events
Yes! I rode a T with a bloke yesterday. My comment was that it was much better than expected, given the rain we'd had. He was royally pissed off that he'd come from Sydney after hearing about dumps of snow and more forecast this weekend. Don't know where he got that report but I enlightened him
I am often amazed how people dont take weather into account when planning activities. I often get invited on mtb rides for instance, where I say, havent you looked at the forecast, its like 95% rain?
One of the ticket checkers said there was a lot of agro on the hill today. Coincided with the influx of crowds I guess. Chill people.
Sydney is the angriest city in OZ, people seem very pressured there. You can always tell when they are in the Bo, no matter what the conditions. They are worse than soccer parents though, the race parents, they invest a lot of money, poor kids, must be a lot of pressure. However they contribute a lot to the mountain community, so just chill and have a polite laugh at them if you can. At least it is sunny today!
Cold pool hitting Perth. 10C for the Mt Lawley station @1pm. Locally heavy showers w/hail. 6C for Bickley (400m).
Snow has held up well at Perisher Must have got a few cms up top. Sun valley still has good runs in both sides. Temps peaked early. Was only showing 4C at terminal earlier on. Towers only has a few brown spots. Less that yesterday. Getting quite cold here in the double now. Few more runs left in today. Seems like more agro at BC than at MtP
What annoys me is the ticket checkers like the girl at the terminal quad today with over 100 people in a queue and not organising people into groups of four, most of them do seem to, but for some reason she didn't.
Roger. I rolled the dice last weekend. Saw the mountain was pretty much open and a system was incoming mid-week. I knew it was going to be a few degrees that would make or break the powder into chowder. Unfortunately it was the latter. So I had a few days in the mountains , cranked a few season opening turns. Nothing too serious , fun was still had. Let the good times roll !
Dropped about 3 deg in the last hour at Kalgoorlie, temp falling one degree short of forecast max of 12.
Had the same experience yesterday. Looped the Supertrail all morning on my own, finding the best bits here and there - no waiting at lifts, snow went from icy to firm with some loose stuff on top to a bit slushy. Then a couple of hours with my son including the Basin until we couldn't see - mizzle and cloud!! Great snow? No. But a great day nonetheless. Beats work!
Coldest day in years for some of WA's centres. Cold pool made it's presence felt through the Goldfields and Wheatbelt regions. Max Temp Deviations Kalgoorlie 10.9C (-6C dev) Norseman Airport 8.8C (-8C dev) Southern Cross Airport 10C (-6C dev) Salmon Gums 10C (-6C dev) even Paraburdoo in the Nor West! 17.5C (-8 dev)
I saw that today, kid all kitted to smack some gates with parent quite concerned about him not getting decent times. Felt like saying to her lady in all honesty the the squad is just taking your money as your kid really just cant ski at the minute. It is what it is.
Waves of rain, sleet, and hail all day in Perth. The outside temp on my car was reading 8c at 3pm. It's bloody cold, and there is plenty of precipitation
Very rarely does a low cell bring such cold weather both sea boards! It's very unique in it's path/trajectory and although the cold front which influenced WA today will have no snow potential for the East Coast it's ability to reform proceeding troughs and fronts, and draw even more polar air from the south is a very beautiful thing!
A few bushes breaking through and holes opening up at Thredbo yesterday. Water runnels out the back of Karels .
Conditions worse today at Thredbo, more gravel to dodge esp lower super trail No crowds tho....where is everyone!
Typical Buller day - cloudy, windy, just a smidge too warm if any precip comes. We definitely need the snow. Having said that I had a great day yesterday skiing Summit (skier's right) into Howqua. By the end of the day the extension was really getting to be a good test of skills dodging the bare patches but the snow that was there was good fun. Big crowds but lifts weren't too bad. Couch day today.
Its the joy of forking out a million to buy a house whilst still having to sit in traffic for 20 hours a week just to get to work. Sydney has some serious problems which is dragging down quality of life which feeds through to people on holidays.
Feels like it should be snowing from the temps here in melbourne .Just gota be patient on this one and hope this first trough dosnt do to much damage !!! I also observe i am packing the car to drive straight to hotham after work tommorow
At Perisher but so far I've managed to avoid all queues. Plenty of brown & thin patches but still plenty of fun to be had
That's a monster of a low. Almost looks like a tropical cyclone. Cool and wind coming from the NE in the Latrobe Valley atm.
See that rain band , about an hour from Tumbarumba then probably another hour to NSW resorts so expect rain about 2.30 to 3.00 pm. Looks mostly light rain though.
Got some r@#n at Buller now. Just light at this stage. Have school trials on LBS tomorrow arvo and then I have to leave as I rented the apartment out this week
The North flow influencing the Vic resorts now looks like it might be helping the uppers/temp here. A NW shift would be less desirable (due later this arvo).
I believe that is now changed to summit. I observe cloudy, bleak day in melbourne with radar showing only light rain on the way, which is good.
Yep, just got the update but I'll be staggered if they can hold it up there given the wind. See you tomorrow? Absolutely filthy here at Buller right now.
Given expected conditions actually had an OK day at Mt P yesterday. Despite evidence of huge crowds given how far down cars were parked on the drive out, didn't really notice them on the mountain until home run down Front Valley. If you can follow a traverse track and dodge the odd rock then you can ski home from top of Pleasant Valley Quad, snowboarders need not apply, some poling and skating required. Plenty of brown patches, occasional rock and shrubbery getting a hair cut, runs with man made had held up better. Practiced drills with friends over Guthega way then once crowds had created enough bumps and slush piles to dissuade the punters on Zalis etc. headed over there and had a lovely couple of hours mid afternoon. Hope the come try nordic skiing event went OK, xc report sounded like the trails had copped it compared to last couple of weekends, which were super fun.
