Go crazy guys (but stay on topic)!
I observe a lot of excitement regarding next week, me included.
Ok. Try and keep it to weather observations.
As Gareth said... very windy in NSW... freeze level of 1850 or so
Thredbo AWS at 0.03 C and a bit of speckled cloud arriving tonight should see 10 15 cm by Saturday Morning.
Yeah 60 knots winds at thredbo AWS. I was wondering last night if that mean that it was closer to 70 or 80 knots at 2200m AHD. Some days, its calm at Charlotte's and raging 50 knots at the main range.
Need snow tonight natural or manmade - does not matter at this stage. Front Valley will be dangerous on Saturday morning if it stays as it curently is and if a crowd arrives. Quad is on wind hold, which has a good chance of being the same tomorrow. Been a cold wind all morning. Low level clouds - just itching for it to snow. No rain. Police are everywhere doing random stops for chains - making people open boots to show they really do have them. Car park is empty. Snow all around on surrounding hills. Just needs a week of blzzards and the season will be better than 2012.
Brief 'heavy' shower in Syd. Radar showing some action around melbourne too.
Cloud building on thredbo cams, BOM puts temp at 0.0*c and RH at 88%
Them does look like storm clouds....
I observe a major lack of work completed by chowder this arvo as I look at the sat pics, charts and read the predictions.
BTB - Haven't had one of those since middle school days. (Belt tuck b....) I'm excited
Dry as a bone in Melbourne itself.
(he says hoping for a dry ride home)
Light shower passing through Frankston/Eastlink
Rain here in Adelaide (heavy at time of posting). On and off since early arvo.
Had a brief shower here in sandy, enough to wet the ground but wouldn't nudge the scoreboard
Have had very heavy showers esp in the hills but 11c up here and hope that it keeps falling
Would be nice to see 10-15c overnight but somehow I think that's wishful thinking there 7wombathead......don't think we'll see any real action until Monday IMO
oops that's a prediction
Back on topic - random, heavy shower hit Syd CBD at around 1:30pm today then quickly moved away to a cloudy and fairly mild afternoon....
Stood on the snow at Front Valley most of the day apart from a brief trip to Blue Cow, very cold in the wind and clouds were wiping across the top of the peaks. Lot of staff don't seem to believe it's going to snow .... hope it does
That would be the ekman effect in action. The main range is often reflected better by more geostrophic 700hPa winds rather than 850hPa surface winds effected by friction. See
I observe that it was a biting 7C in Canberra as I filled up the Jazz with petrol in readiness for this weekends trip to ski Perisher FV. I also observe that I hope Skippy and Rudolph sleep in as I travel down the Monaro tomorrow.
I have observed lots more skippy and womby than usual in the last couple of days be very aware, IMO its something to do with this weather system
certainly cold enough for snow tonight. Tonight is good for 5cm based on incoming cloud, moisture and IMO
Looks like a little cell heading for the vic alps. Should be ok snow around 1700ish.
Hoth System -.2, Falls/Buller + 1, radar had moisture north of Buller, phew, looks heading for Hotham/Falls, marginal IMO
Haven't seen a sat pic like that for a looooong time, first system is BIG. Check how far north the cold pool extends, Perth is gunna cop it...
Cloud being sucked into system from northwest looks cool...
Snowing at Blue cow right now
Quite heavy snow, ie more than a flurry and no wind
Front valley cam at Perisher looks very sad right now.
I'm sure it will look a lot better in 48-72 hours time
I heard the same re snow blue cow and liquid snow on fv
Tonights AXS still holding for round one and has next weekend looking better IMO.
I observe light showers all the way from PV to Cooma.
Drizzling steadily at Hotham, but BOM showing down to 0.2 up the top now so we might see a change...
11pm edit; drizzled stopped, stars out, below zero.
Temps have gone down a bit tonight to negatives but there is no juice.
The BOM has issued this warning already
Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds and blizzard conditions
for people in the Wimmera, North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts
Issued at 10:46 am EST on Sunday 22 June 2014.
A strong cold front will cross the Bight today and will approach western Victoria tonight. The front will then move across the State on Monday, reaching central areas in the afternoon and the northeast by the evening. Strong to gale force northerly winds and rain will develop ahead of the change overnight Sunday and during Monday, while scattered showers with local hail and thunder will follow the change. Snow down to 700m is expected by Monday night as the colder air spreads across the State after the front.
Damaging winds around 50 to 70 km/h are forecast to develop over southern and mountain districts, with peak gusts of 100-120 km/h over elevated areas and 90 to100 km/h more generally.
Blizzard conditions are forecast for Alpine regions of the North East and Gippsland forecast districts.
Obs not forecasts in this thread.
'Tis a thing of beauty (will update):
Took the words right outta my mouth 4square, and sat pic says it all, that is one amazing lookin system. I observe nw cloud feeding in, boom!!!!!
I observe the satellite picture looks pretty awesome. A lot of moisture in the cold air behind the initial front.
You're bang on the $ there PG (will update) - how good is that tropical NW feed:
Just got back from a fishing trip off Moruya Heads. Water temperature 5km offshore is still 19.5C.
It's a beautiful thang
There's a lot of speckle in the bight
Oh boy, how good does that look? Feel like a kid waiting for Santa ATM
I observe that there wasn't a breath of wind in Perisher all day.
I also observe that this won't be true for tomorrow
I observe me too!!!!
I observe winds picking up pre-front in essendon, bring it on!!!!!!
Gusting 87kmph at Buller now
Damn iPhone won't post pic!
Legit warm this morning in Mordy. And windy.
Waiting can eat a dick.
