May as well start the obs thread!

Hopefully not too much rain for the resorts. If we can come out of this week without too much damage it will be a big plus. Esp with the following week temps looking nice and cold at this stage.

M-HD - Id say any comments from carve relate to buller. I hear they are changing the name of the run "fast one" to "carve one" in his honour!?!?

    Re: June 25 - 28 Obs

Beat me by a few minutes...
I have been looking at sat images, You can clearly see the cloudband on both the WV and IR. It is traveling in a northerly direction but the surface winds at the airport are southerly (albeit light)

what we want to see is that cold air at the surface to hang around!

nice cloud heading down the coast, some embedded thunderstorms... Some reasonable rainfalls with Ulladulla at ~30mm since 9am...

The Melbourne sounding has mid level moisture and a FZL of ~1400m, but the Sydney sounding (in this cloudband) has a FZL of more like 2000m..

So what would be nice to see is this cloudband to head off the coast, the warm air to deepen the low forming there, and this low to suck cold air from further south to interact with the moisture...

    Marginal... very very marginal...

Over 35mm of rain in the last day (east of Canberra at 800m). Currently 4.5C so the temperature in the mountains could be quite low. I believe it drops about 1C for each 200m in these sort of conditions (can someone confirm?). If so it would be blow zero at the top of Thredbo and PB. But above zero in Thredbo itself.

Drove back from Wollongong this morning. The area between Sutton Forest and Goulburn is saturated. Perhaps both Goulburn and Sydney will have healthy dam levels after this lot.

Currently -2.2C at the Thredbo AWS (1957m). That equates to a drop of 1.72C per 200m. No precipitation at Thredbo AWS. [IMG]

    Re: June 25 - 28 Obs

Canberra's been cold and wet... currently 4.3 degrees, thats a drop of almost 3 degrees since 8am this morning. Almost 39mm of rain at the airport since 4am...

The rain doesn't look like its getting to the snowies... [IMG] At least it should be good for filling up the dams. I guessing the Molonglo river (the river that feeds into lake burley griffin) will be nicely flooded for the second time in the last week. Before that it was years since it'd happened. It wasn't even running at the start of the year.

PB is pretty marginal, going from +0.5 at 1604 m to -2.5 at 1970 m.

Looks like basically everywhere is just managing to hang below zero except for Baw Baw. They have all increased a few degrees in the last 6 hours but seem to be trending towards steady now.

    Please don't rain!!!

Both Temp and pressure on the drop at Thredbo now. -2.4 and 1013. Perhaps the BOM's latest blizzard warning might have some truth about it yet!

    Prescisely...
This cold front forms the cold arm of the circulation... the warm arm is heading down the coast...

Is the cold arm going to contain any moisture though?

The precip seems to be stoping around Cooma, although that could just be as far as the radar goes.

It has started snowing lightly at Thredbo top station.

Less than the warm air stream, there is your dilemma...
Cold air tends to be dryer..

the Saturation vapour pressure, ie the amount of water vapour you can have suspended in the atmosphere without condensation and cloud formation, is lower for cold air than it is for warm...

From Banks (south of Tuggeranong), I can see snow half way down Mount Tennent. And the northern slabs at Booroomba look like a ski field. The Tidbinbilla range must be covered!

As I reported earlier, lots of rain around Goulburn. The George Plain has now changed into the George Swamp. As the water drains to the deeper parts, a small Lake George may reappear. Lots of miserable looking sheep congregating on the higher parts. Not good being a sheep at any time, but especially now.

Can see Tidbinbilla now and its covered nicely down to about 12-1300mts I would say. I drove back from Sydney to Canberra on Saturday and was surprised how much water seems to be making its way to Lake George. In my opinion the drought has nearly broken here we just need the run off to start accumulating which it will certainly be doing with this latest rain.

I think PB is looking at a major dump form this. Smiggans and the bottom of the ridge might suffer but up high will have deep clag glue.

BOM is predicting the will start going up some time tomorrow. Looking at the radar the NSW resorts could get a heap of snow before the start to raise.

It is 7 deg in Bega where this solid bulk of rain is sitting. Looking at the movement on the radar, It should it NSW resorts during the night. I am pretty confident that temp will stay low during the night and that we are on (maybe) for a nice suprise.
