I hope that with the onset of the warmer air combined with the normal night time cooling that there is no change in temp and it stays at -1 and PUKES all night. [IMG] COME ON

I doubt we'll get any reports from hotham or falls until after the lifts close. I know I wouldn't be coming down off the mountain in this sort of dump!

The current scenario must be posing a bit of a forecasting conundrum for the BOM. Their 4 day chart is quite late being issued.

    Re: rain at Baw Baw!

Not according to BOM, just the AWS.
    Just issued:
Heavy Rainfall leading to Flash Flooding
Rainfall continues across Gippsland with the heaviest rainfall continuing to occur over West Gippsland and southern parts of the Alpine Region [Mt Wellington has receiving in excess of 140mm this morning, while rainfall observations from Mt Baw Baw are being treated as suspect].
    Covered in the catchment thread.

    Re: June 25 - 28 Obs

The BOM have forecast the low to be centred almost right over the south coast at 10 am tomorrow morning. Combine that with a forecast pressure of 981 Hpa and you could safely say that it hasn't finished yet. It also looks like the warmer air won't affect the mountains too much(NSW) as it moves further east by Friday. There's a good old fashioned cold front going to come through on the weekend anyway.

"Knee deep powder" ... at barely -2.5C up top, and probably about -1 at the bottom ... I doubt it was true powder ;), perhaps 40cm of snow but I doubt it was powder and the rain that is on the way will make it quite heavy by tomorrow.

Again, from another person here, I think your mate is full of it or has never skied real powder before in his life ...

Anyway ... interesting with the temp drop, it could actually go either way tonight, the warmer air is not really due until tomorrow, but it depends what the vertical profile of the front is like ... either way, it certainly looks like a true base maker [IMG]

The term powder has a very loose definition these days - I agree! Sick stuff for base building though.

I'd really like to see any Australian snow compare to the stuff that fell in Japan -- now that was some more legit pow.

Will be interesting to see what happens overnight/tomorrow morning.

Sensational to see Hotham at -1.7 this late into the system... I was one of the more optimistic (or more of a fence sitter) on this system and I am pleasantly suprised how far into the heavy precipitation the sub zeros have lasted...

At -1.7 most if not all of Hotham will be getting snow..

Very, very loosely used, mainly by yungen's on this board! [IMG]

Fresh dry snow is what we get...at best. Very few places compare to Japow or inland BC for powder.

I think we would all love to ski "powder" in OZ but lets face it, 0 to -2 aint gonna give it to us this time, its just to wet!

as for the pow debate...im sure all of those who know what squeaky dry power is, can hold your frustration and simply accept that for Australia powder=fresh snow.

Fresh wet snow on a board is great until it gets cut up. Then you go get a coffee.
