Temp is not the only issue in most cases. The mountains are too close to the coastline. Whistler rarely gets true powder but Colorado gets heaps at the same temp. Im sure there is a technical reason for this...I just dont know it....

wet snow is better than no snow, and this wet snow will be building a great base especially up high!

There's been a big increase in wind speeds in the past couple of hours at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek - wind gusts up to 119km/h presently - and with it a temperature increase as well (Hotham is currently 0.4°C and Falls is currently 1°C).

Yeah, a fair bit of damage downstairs at buller, but parts of falls look amazing.

Thredbo and Perisher look mighty damp too, but still a little snow on rooves giving the impression of not too much lost.

Just dipping below zero now at Hotham again. Low forecast to intensify sub 990 so we MAY see a return to snow. Will be back and forth for most of today snow/rain

Yep... Not bad... It is good they got plastered before the wet hit, up high (above ~1650ish) I think there will be net gain if not base consolidation (ie what was 20cm of loosepack will now be 20cm of bulletproof base good for followup falls)

I am now watching the front due friday night with a lot of interest...

Remenber the past rain events when the fronts were coming straigh down from the tropics, Temp at Thredbo top station was hovering around +4 deg and we had in excess of 60mm of rain...that was nasty. As many have already mentioned this year, It looks more as a good consolidation happening with the rain. And temp should head south again during the day....All good !

    Re: June 25 - 28 Obs

Dude, I think I know what rain damage looks like. I was just commenting on how it must have rained at some point. How on earth can a webcam deceive me by showing rain damage when it actually (not saying it did) dumped overnight??? If it was showing a spot with good cover when the rest of the resort was rocky then I understand what you are saying but your comment in relation to what I said is stupid. A cam does not lie about rain damage, or when it has snowed, or when it is day, when it is night, when it is sunny....

Half and Half, (responding to Undies last night), business (in sales) is panic to get all invoices and stock out.... severe pressure......
    Snow, good dumpage... yesterday/last night....

Today will be risky, fingers crossed (on the snow front that is), hope we get some white top up before Saturday AM (purely selfish reasons, of course

berg stop stirring the pot. If you have an issue explain it clearly in another more suitable forum instead of throwing red herring here and there.

This thread is for observations only and I will make sure it contains only that.

    Re: June 25 - 28 Obs

I see the Thredbo top station temp has dropped pproximately 0.5 deg in past couple of hours, but I see a similar rise the other way for victorian resorts with radar showing precipitation moving eastward some. Are we seeing the low's tail end for now prior to the next front maybe connecting....four day prognosis sees that front hitting tomorrow.

Rainbands are moving NW'ly, I would have expected to see NSW warming slightly compared to VIC... but there you go, can't account for localized variances... comfroting to see Smig's with snow dusting, as long as it stays that way... any Ob's from Vic resorts ? Cam's show dusting at FC car park etc...??

Temperature has dropped back to 0 at Falls which is good, it looks like last night it must of had a bit of rain as the roof tops are now snow less and also the rail in the car park cam. Plus if they got 17cm at 3o'clock yesterday but only recorded a gain of 16cm totday they must of lost a fair bit?

Looking like Perisher will get my ticket this weekend at this stage. Bottom of THredbo is looking mighty wet, while Smiggs is showing moderate slush, which bodes better for Mt P, etc.

Unless of course we get that super cold front delivering down low on Fri/Sat.... c'mon baby.....

    Re: June 25 - 28 Obs

The Mount P cam shows a definite INCREASE in cover since 1pm yesterday, which backs up their claims of snowfall. Seems that whatever rain they had was either too cold/sleety or too light to have any real impact on the cover there.

Anything at PB lower than 1900 m or so seems to be above 0 degrees [IMG] But only just, and its near the middle of the day, so hopefully temps will start to drop again in a couple of hours and the worst they will get is some sleet.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, the view across to front valley no longer shows protrusions through the snow, as it has all year so far.

I think you can also see an accumulation of snow on the roof of the building to the left.

Smigs has still got slush ridges across the road, I think only drizzly ATM (mountain drizzle), there is much rainband activity over the alpine regions ATM, so as we move to the evening things should start to improve, hopefully...
