Might as well kick this off.
Plenty blowy in Melbourne.
I observe that it’s even cold and wet in brisbane today
Nice in Sydney today
I observe some good temps over Mt Gambier this (10)AM. Theoretically snow above 1900m IMO.
Looks pretty good thus far, even the DGZ values are looking good.
I observe a warm but very windy ride into work this morning ( melbs).
I better get the wind behind me on the way home.
I observe a very soft season opening for Perisher just occurred
Start the period with the V8 opening.
I observe Thredbo not opening for skiing or boa
rding this weekend.
Am going to see Hot Mud Slime (rage against the) Machine on Saturday. A few years back Sneaky Sound System played an awesome gig. Said to mate, "wouldn't some snow be great." Ten minutes later the flakes came down, just like this Saturday...I observe. It really did through the coloured lights and all and it was never a case of "I saw a flake of snow but nobody believed me" as the revellers all experienced same and cheap beer.
I'm going to visit Europe for 12 months so I will be spending winter time in French alps. I will send you some pics.
I like pictures of pineapples.

Dry, calm and a warm 13 in Tuggeranong this evening. No need for a jacket at kids training. Too warm.
Warm here in Kings Cross, iweather reading 17 outside at the moment.
I'm the guy in the Blue Jacket. I'm famous!
Must have been the fella signing autographs! That aside, damn great skiers in that APSI crew today. Just had to keep out of their way as way too quick for these old legs. (As observed)...
Stay on topic.
Warm in Melbourne tonight, still 17c in the CBD. Decidedly un-winter this evening. First time the heater has been switched off at night in a week.
mm , lets see
Upper level moisture potentially falling into lower level dry air. 850 hPa temps of around +3 to +4 deg C.
This gives a nominal freezing level around 1800-1900m ignoring all inversions and assuming dry air. So it is possible that if the air below this rain event is dry then freezing levels could lower enough to snow due to evaporative cooling, but I would be surprised to see accumulations below 1600m and more likely above 1700m. I think places like Perisher, top of Thredbo and Charlottes might do ok. Elsewhere will be more wet than snow on Friday early Saturday.
Upper air ascents upstream in Adelaide and Woomera don't look promising for snow.
There is an above freezing inversion at around 2500m meaning it will probably rain at that level. If snow does not melt through that layer it may snow lower due to evaporative cooling, but lots of opposing factors leaning the odds away from snow settling. Adelaide does have a below freezing pocket below this warm inversion though, perhaps suggesting evaporative cooling is happening, but even this struggles to keep freezing temps below 2000m.
Fortunately for Saturday AM the upper level cold air component is South of Adelaide. The 800mb inversion looks to get cleared out for the Alps after midday if modelling verifies.
11c in Jindy, hottest it’s been for a couple of weeks. 50km/hr winds.
Yeah. It’s howling at Moonbah. Heavy cloud has rolled in. Thredbo Top Station reported a gust at 141 clicks. Going to be interesting watching the weather in the mountains today.
Buller just dropped a couple of degrees now sitting on +0.5C and precip accumulating. 3mm in the last hour.
Appears to be snowing on a Big D’s cam.
+0.2C and 3mm in the last hour for Hotham AWS
Yep temps are actually falling for once. bom and cams show rain at Perisher currently - but maybe there is hope yet. Though 11c in Jindy is almost good enough for a dip in the lake.
Don't forget the sunscreen.
At the high perch over Tumbarumba (954 asl) its 3c , almost zero wind , intermittent rain started at 557am now just drizzle with 0.6mm in the jar.
Crumbs... BOM radar showing some serious moisture heading to all the majors. Hoping it falls as snow. Where are those darn snow gods when you need them?
Interesting to see nearly 100km/h wind gusts for both Hotham, Falls and Buller this morning’s and not a single wind advisory out of Vic BoM.
NSW BoM has one issued.
EDIT: yes there is
There's been severe weather warning for damaging winds up since yesterday in Vic. Last updated this morning http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDV21037.shtml
I observe that it has been over 18c in Bairnsdale since about 4am. Too warm for moccasins!
Found it, as edited above. Cheers, I am half asleep.
on ya bike - I hear FF will be good for some BMX action this weekend
Wet snow falling on Thredbo Basin live cam and turning white pretty quickly on the ground. Also wet flakes falling on Merrits but not settling
Looks very wet to my eye....ie rain
definitely whiter on the ground than when i looked at 7am
Yep, def snow on the Basin Cam, wet or otherwise it’s getting whiter.
Accumulating up higher at Thredders (finally).
Current Sydney conditions... overcast
Is it just me or does it appear there is snow on the Hotham cams ?
Here you go..,..,base of Eyre T Bar just now. Heavy wet snow starting to accumulate. Driven by strong winds. Snow started at about Smiggin Holes.
Actually, some of the flakes are really large. Better that the r””n predicted!!
Could be a nice surprise if it can keep up??
I observe that the unexpected snow might catch a lot of people out . Take care people particularly on the roads
I observer very little work getting done today with the HighNoon cam locked onto one of my screens.
Snow settling at Mid Station
One thing observers will notice today is the size of the flakes. We have some great DGZ values today (particularly this afternoon), which in layman's terms means large developed snow flakes. Great for accumulation and great for cam viewing.
Heavy snow on High Noon Live cam (~1800m?)
